Every fuel system job starts with one question: how does fuel actually get from the tank to the engine on this machine? On a 2022 Brute Force 750 4x4i the answer is an electric pump inside the tank feeding a pressurized hose to the throttle body, where the injector meters it into the 749cc V–twin. Nothing here is gravity fed, there is no petcock to close, and the circuit stays under pressure long after you shut it off.

Understanding a Fuel–Injected Layout

Because the pump lives in the tank, the hose you are replacing is the pressure side of the system rather than a simple gravity drop. That has three practical consequences. First, your shutoff device is a pair of line–clamping pliers, not a valve. Second, pressure has to be deliberately bled off before any fitting is opened. Third, the filter is bundled into the in–tank pump module instead of hanging inline where you can see and change it. Add selectable four–wheel–drive to the picture and the hose path threads past front differential hardware and extra frame crossmembers, giving it a slightly longer and more constrained route than a two–wheel–drive quad would have.

Symptoms That Send Owners Looking

Hose trouble announces itself gradually. Watch for these:

  • A gasoline smell that will not clear from around the front of the machine, sharpest just after shutdown
  • Wet marks, drip trails, or a shallow puddle on the skid plate or shop floor
  • Fine cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a hardened stretch that will not compress under a pinch
  • Dust glued into a ring at a fitting by fuel that seeped out and dried
  • Bogging under load, stumbling on hard throttle, or symptoms that mimic running low on fuel

Pressurized leaks behave differently from gravity leaks. Fuel escaping a pinhole often atomizes and evaporates before it can pool, so a dry floor is not a clean bill of health. Odor plus a careful gloved inspection along the full hose length is the reliable diagnostic on this platform.

How Age and Fuel Chemistry Kill a Hose

Fuel line stiffens before it fails. Sustained engine heat drives the plasticizers out of the rubber over years, and once they leave, the wall loses its ability to flex. From there, ordinary chassis vibration works hairline splits into the surface, usually at the bend where the hose leaves a fitting and flex concentrates.

Where and how the machine lives changes the pace. Dry climates pull moisture from the hose wall and accelerate hardening from the outside in. Ethanol–blended gasoline attacks the liner from within, swelling and softening it while drawing in water that leaves gum deposits. A Brute Force that goes months between rides with E10 in the system gets hit from both sides at once. That is why hose age deserves weight in your decision even when the exterior still looks presentable.

Tools, Supplies, and Handling Fuel Safely

Stage the following before you begin:

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves plus safety glasses
  • Injection–rated replacement hose in the correct inside diameter
  • Fresh clamps of the appropriate style, or a small clamp kit
  • Line–clamping pliers to pinch off flow, since no petcock exists
  • A sealed, fuel–rated container and a low drain pan
  • Socket set, small flat–blade screwdriver, razor knife, and a stack of rags

Treat vapor as the primary hazard. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and settle into a layer at floor height, right where you will be while working beneath the tank. Do this outdoors or with the door fully open and a fan on the ground pushing air outward. Remove every ignition source from the space, including appliance pilot lights, and take soaked rags outside rather than leaving them next to the quad.

Removal, Installation, and the Final Leak Check

Relieve pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank in short bursts until the engine quits and will not restart, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Then remove the seat and the front bodywork covering the tank outlet and hose run. Slide the pan under the work area and hold a rag around each fitting as it opens, because the hose retains fuel even with pressure gone.

Push clamps well back along the hose before rotating anything. On a locking quick–connect, press the tabs straight in and pull the fitting straight off, never at an angle, since aged plastic collars crack easily. Break varnish bonds by twisting the hose gently on the barb rather than pulling hard, and slit a truly stuck hose lengthwise with a razor so you can peel it off in strips without damaging the fitting. Photograph every clip and clearance point on the way out.

Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly. Extra slack chafes on frame edges or interferes with steering travel, and a short piece keeps tension on both fittings. Seat each end fully, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone are strictly off limits on fuel fittings, because a lubricated sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route to work out from under the clamp. Hot water for a few seconds softens a stubborn end. Set the new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly, firm without cutting the rubber. Where a self–locking quick–connect is used, push until it clicks and pull to confirm it latched, and leave the clamp off.

Finish by refitting the pump fuse and battery, then cycling the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the circuit. Wipe both joints, inspect visually, and feel for beading fuel. Start the engine, check at idle, blip the throttle, and look once more. Several minutes of dry running earns reassembly of the plastics. If the 2022 Brute Force still acts fuel starved after all that, remember the filter sits inside the tank with the pump, and that assembly rather than your new hose is the logical next step.
