The fuel hose on a 2022 Brute Force 300 is one of the shortest, simplest runs of plumbing on any utility quad, which is exactly why it is easy to forget about. It carries every drop of fuel your engine burns, sits within a few inches of a warm cylinder, and will eventually harden. Replacing it before it splits is time well spent.
Following the Fuel From Tank to Carburetor
Pull the seat and you can trace the entire path with your eyes. Fuel leaves the tank through a petcock, the manual valve that lets you shut the supply off completely, then travels downhill through a single hose to the carburetor inlet. Since this machine is carbureted, nothing in that path is pressurized. There is no in-tank pump to bleed down, no relay or fuse to remove first, and no pressurized quick-connect coupler that needs a release tool. Barbed spigots and clamps handle both ends.
The carburetor's float bowl drain screw belongs in your plan as well. Fit clear tubing over it, aim it into a container, and open the screw to empty the bowl before touching the hose. With this being a 2x4 chassis, no front differential or additional driveline hardware sits in the way, so the run is direct and easy to reach — noticeably simpler than performing the same job around the front driveline of a four-wheel-drive machine.
Signs You Can Spot in the Driveway
A failing hose almost always advertises itself first. Fuel staining or a slow drip beneath the left side of the quad is the most obvious clue, and a gasoline smell hanging around the front plastics counts even without a visible drop, since a small weep often evaporates before it lands. Run your fingers along the hose: fine cracks that open under flex, a hard glassy feel, or a soft swollen section all mean the material is finished.
Watch the fittings for a caked ring of dust, which forms where fuel has seeped and dried over and over. The engine will chip in too. Restricted flow from a collapsing hose, or air drawn in past a loose joint, leans the mixture out and produces bogging when you get on the throttle, a stumble at steady speed, or the sensation of running out of gas with a half tank showing.
Heat, Dry Air, and Ethanol
Three things wear fuel hose out. The first is heat: warmth radiating off the air-cooled 271cc single drives plasticizers out of the rubber, and without them the hose stiffens and eventually cracks at the bends and under the clamps. The second is dry air, which pulls moisture out of the hose wall and leaves the outer surface chalky, so machines in arid regions typically need hose earlier than those in humid climates.
The third is ethanol-blended fuel working on the inner liner. Alcohol content attracts and holds moisture against the rubber, slowly degrading the inside surface and shedding fine debris toward the carburetor. That damage is worst when fuel sits still, so a Brute Force 300 that spends long stretches parked with a partial tank ages its plumbing faster than one used every weekend. A hose can look serviceable from the outside while the liner is already breaking down.
What to Have Ready
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved fuel container plus a shallow catch pan
- Replacement line in the correct inside diameter, bought slightly long for trimming
- Fresh hose clamps or a small assortment kit, since original clamps lose tension with age
- Clear tubing for the float bowl drain
- Flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a small socket set, and clean rags
Give the fuel the respect it deserves. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles near the floor, exactly where a pilot light or a shop heater can reach it, so ventilation at ground level matters far more than an open window overhead. Work outdoors or with the garage door all the way up, keep an extinguisher close, and keep grinders, torches, and open flame out of the space. Let any spill evaporate in the open rather than sealing soaked rags in a closed container.
Taking the Old Hose Off
Close the petcock first. Remove the seat and any bodywork blocking your access, drain the float bowl into your container through the clear tube, then reseat the drain screw. Slide the pan into place and drape a rag over whichever fitting you open first, since the hose holds fuel even after the valve is shut.
Loosen both clamps and slide them well up the hose so they are out of the way. Twist the hose on its barb to break the varnish bond instead of pulling it straight off; that keeps unnecessary strain off the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet, both of which are easier to damage than they look. When a hose refuses to release, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in halves. Note the routing and any frame clip it travels through before the old piece is completely out.
Seating and Clamping the Replacement
Cut the new hose to match the original length. Extra length invites chafing against the frame or a kink that restricts flow, and a short piece puts constant tension on both barbs. Work each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out, and install it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone — lubricant on a fuel fitting creates a slow weep and allows the hose to migrate off the barb under vibration. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a moment if it will not start.
Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly. Firm and snug is the target; a clamp cranked down until it bites into the rubber creates the very leak you are trying to eliminate. Put the hose back through its original clip so it stays away from hot surfaces and moving components.
Verify, Then Ride
Open the petcock and give the system a minute to fill the line and the float bowl. Wipe both connections with a dry rag and inspect closely under strong light for any bead of fuel. Then start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and check both joints again while everything is warm and shaking, because heat and vibration reveal a marginal connection that appeared perfect while cold. Once you have two clean inspections, reinstall the plastics and seat and your 2022 Brute Force 300 is ready to earn its keep.
