Rubber Ages Whether You Ride or Not

Fuel hose is a consumable, even though nobody treats it like one. The rubber stays soft because of plasticizers mixed into the compound, and those slowly work their way out under years of engine heat until the hose is stiff instead of supple. Once that pliability is gone, vibration and frame flex do the rest, opening fine checks in the surface that spread deeper with every ride. Owners in dry, high-desert country watch this happen faster, because low humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens it prematurely.

Ethanol-blended gas does the opposite kind of damage on the inside. When a 2022 Rincon 680 sits for a few months with E10 in the system, the alcohol pulls in water and starts breaking down the inner liner, softening it and releasing fine debris into a fuel circuit that has no appetite for particles. Both processes can be underway on a hose that still looks presentable, which is why a hose gets judged by how it feels and how old it is rather than how it photographs.

Confirming the Fuel Delivery Setup First

The Rincon 680 is a fuel-injected machine. Honda feeds its 675cc single with programmed fuel injection, so nothing about this job involves a petcock, a gravity feed, or a float bowl drain screw. The pump sits inside the tank and the hose to the throttle body carries pressure any time the key is on. That is a meaningful difference from a carbureted quad, where closing a valve is the entire shutoff procedure. Here you interrupt the pump circuit and bleed the pressure before a fitting comes loose, and depending on how your machine is plumbed you may be releasing a locking quick-connect coupler rather than backing off a clamp.

Being a 4x4, this Rincon carries a front differential and driveshaft under the forward frame section along with the mounts that support them. The line run is short, but it navigates clearance points a two-wheel-drive chassis does not have, so pull the panels and give yourself real access.

Catching a Failing Line Early

Watch for these before the hose leaves you sitting:

  • A wet spot or standing puddle beneath the tank area, on the skid plate or the floor
  • Gasoline smell that hangs around the machine, strongest in the minutes after shutdown
  • Visible cracking, a chalky gray finish, or a hard spot that will not squeeze
  • An engine that bogs on a climb, stumbles under throttle, or behaves like the tank is nearly empty when it is not
  • A dirt-crusted ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and evaporated over and over

Because this is a pressurized system, small leaks sometimes atomize instead of dripping. If you smell fuel and find no puddle, keep looking.

Gather Your Gear and Ventilate the Space

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline strips your skin and carries additives worth keeping off it
  • Fuel-injection rated replacement hose in the original inside diameter
  • New clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if a coupler is used at the pump outlet
  • Line-clamping pliers for pinching off a low-pressure section in the absence of a petcock
  • An approved fuel container, a drain pan, and plenty of rags
  • A basic socket set and a small flat-blade screwdriver for panels and clamps

Do this outdoors or with the door wide open and a fan pushing air across the floor. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools low, so floor-level airflow matters far more than a cracked window overhead. Keep every ignition source out of the area, including battery chargers, shop heaters, and anything with a pilot light, and never begin with a hot engine.

Working the Old Hose Free

Kill the pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it dies, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastic over the tank so both hose ends are exposed at once. Slide the drain pan under the machine and hold a rag against the joint as you open it, since a depressurized line still holds fuel.

Move spring clips or worm-gear clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the connection. On a quick-connect, press the tabs straight in and pull the coupler off square; prying sideways cracks aged plastic. Old hose usually varnishes itself onto the barb, so twist it gently to break that bond rather than pulling hard on a fitting. When it truly refuses, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away. Photograph the routing, the clip positions, and how the line clears the front driveline before it is entirely off the machine.

Setting the New Line in Place

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra hose seems harmless until the bodywork goes back on and it chafes a frame rail or leans against something hot. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it stops, working completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray stay in the cabinet for this job; a slick sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route past the clamp. If the fit is tight, dip the hose end in hot water for a few seconds and it will go on.

Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly. Self-locking quick-connect fittings need no clamp whatsoever: push until you feel the click, then pull firmly to confirm the lock engaged. Put the hose back through every factory guide so it stays clear of the front differential hardware and the exhaust.

Proving the Repair

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and turn the key on and off five or six times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line and lets you inspect a dry joint for beading with the engine still off. Wipe both connections, look again, then start the machine and let it idle several minutes while you check with a clean rag. Rev it lightly, inspect once more, and only then reinstall the plastics.

Finally, know where the filter lives on this platform. On the injected Rincon 680 it is inside the tank with the pump module, not inline where you can reach it with a wrench. A new hose will not fix a plugged filter, so if the machine still feels short on fuel after everything is dry, the in-tank assembly is your next step.
