Somewhere between the tank and the throttle body of every quad sits a length of rubber doing a job nobody thinks about. On a 2022 CFORCE 800 XC EPS that hose handles pressurized fuel next to a hot V-twin, and it wears out on a schedule of its own. Replacing it before it splits is a straightforward piece of maintenance and one of the easier ways to avoid a walk home.

Relieving Pressure Comes First

The reason this job starts differently than it would on an older quad is the fuel system itself. The 2022 CFORCE 800 XC EPS uses an 800cc liquid-cooled V-twin with electronic fuel injection, meaning no petcock exists and fuel never travels by gravity. An electric pump inside the tank keeps the supply hose pressurized, and the circuit holds that pressure long after shutdown. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine stalls, key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable before touching a fitting. Where a carbureted machine would let you close a valve, here line-clamping pliers do that work.

The XC also runs selectable 2WD/4WD alongside electronic power steering, so the front differential, driveshaft, and steering assist hardware fill the space ahead of the engine. The hose therefore takes a sheltered route with several frame clearance points instead of a short, exposed run. Photograph the routing before disassembly so reassembly is not a guessing game.

What Kills a Fuel Hose Over Time

Two things, working from opposite directions. Heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and without them the hose loses flexibility, turns brittle, and begins to craze at every bend under normal vibration. Riders in dry climates watch this happen faster, because low humidity pulls residual moisture from the hose wall and hardens the surface from the outside in.

Ethanol-blended fuel attacks the liner. E10 draws water into the fuel system and slowly degrades the interior surface, which means a hose can be swelling and shedding material inside while looking respectable outside. Fuel that sits for months during an idle stretch also deposits gum and varnish at the barbs. Since most of this damage is hidden, treat hose age as the deciding factor rather than a clean-looking exterior.

Symptoms That Justify a Closer Look

  • A wet spot on the skid plate or a stain on the floor after the machine has been parked
  • A gasoline odor around the tank that lingers well after the engine cools
  • Fine cracks, chalky texture, or a hardened length you can feel through a glove
  • Bogging under acceleration, a lean surge at sustained throttle, or an engine acting like the tank is nearly dry
  • Dust caked into a ring at a fitting where fuel has been seeping and evaporating

On a pressurized circuit, small leaks often mist rather than drip and evaporate before reaching the ground. A persistent fuel smell with nothing visibly wet is still a good reason to run a gloved hand along the full length of hose.

Supplies and a Word About Vapor

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves
  • Fuel hose rated for injection pressure in the factory inside diameter
  • A sealable container approved for gasoline
  • New clamps matching those you remove, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted
  • Line-clamping pliers
  • Sockets, a screwdriver, a razor blade, and plenty of clean rags

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and travels along the ground toward pilot lights, chargers, and power tools rather than rising out a window. Work outdoors when conditions allow. In a garage, open the overhead door completely, clear ignition sources out of the space entirely, and cap the drain container as soon as fuel goes into it.

Working the Old Hose Off

With pressure relieved, remove the seat and the side panels blocking access to the tank outlet, then trace the hose forward toward the throttle body. Slide a drain pan under the first fitting you intend to open and lay a rag across it, because a depressurized hose still holds enough fuel to make a mess when the joint separates.

Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. Quick-connect couplers release when both tabs are depressed squarely and the connector is pulled straight off; prying sideways will crack a collar hardened by years of engine heat. When the hose has bonded itself to a barb, twist it lightly to break the varnish seal, and if it refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than damaging the fitting.

Installing the Replacement and Proving It Dry

Cut the new hose to match the original length. Extra slack chafes against frame tabs or interferes with steering movement, while a short piece keeps both fittings under constant tension. Seat each end fully onto its barb working completely dry, because grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route past the clamp. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn hose end enough to push it home.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug enough to grip without deforming the hose. Any self-locking quick-connect needs no clamp at all; press it until it clicks and then tug to verify the latch. Reroute the hose through every factory clip so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front driveline components.

Finish by reinstalling the fuse, Reconnecting the battery, and cycling the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while both joints are dry, giving you the clearest possible view of any seepage. Wipe each connection with a clean rag, then idle the engine several minutes and inspect again before the plastics return. One detail specific to this injected XC: the fuel filter lives inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the hose, so if delivery still feels weak after a leak-free install, that assembly is the next thing to address.
