Between water crossings, packed silt, and the heat of a hardworking Rotax V-twin, the supply line on a 2022 Renegade 650 X MR takes a beating — and it takes it under pressure, because this quad is electronically fuel injected with the pump submerged in the tank. No petcock exists anywhere in that circuit, which is the detail shaping everything ahead.

Symptoms That Point Straight at the Hose

An X MR spends its life in water and mud, which means the usual visual clues get masked by a coating of dried silt. Look past that and check for the following:

  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the tank area, strongest in the first minute after you shut the engine off while residual pressure is still in the line
  • A damp patch or slow drip landing on the skid plate rather than the ground, since the belly plating catches fuel before it reaches the floor
  • Hard starting after the quad has sat overnight, which suggests the circuit is bleeding down through a weeping joint
  • Stumbling or a flat spot under heavy throttle in deep mud, when the engine is asking for maximum flow and a compromised line cannot supply it
  • A crusted, dirt–caked ring at either fitting, the telltale mark of fuel seeping and evaporating over many rides

Keep in mind that a pressure–side leak on an injected machine often atomizes rather than drips. Your nose will find it before your eyes do.

The Reasons Rubber Stops Sealing

Fuel hose does not wear out from use so much as from time. The plasticizers that keep the compound flexible slowly migrate out, and the hose transitions from pliable to stiff to genuinely brittle. Every heat cycle off the V-twin accelerates that, and so does the constant vibration and frame flex an X MR sees when it is working through ruts and holes.

Climate plays a real role too. Machines kept in arid, high–desert conditions lose moisture from the hose wall faster, and the outer surface develops that dull, chalky look well ahead of schedule. Working from the inside out, ethanol–blended pump gas attacks the liner chemically, particularly when a Renegade sits between seasons with old fuel still in the system. The result is a hose that can look acceptable on the outside while shedding softened material toward the injectors.

Gathering Tools and Setting Up Safely

Lay everything out before you open a single fitting:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline pulls the oils right out of your skin
  • An approved sealed container for the fuel you capture, plus a shallow drain pan
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor tubing
  • Fresh clamps that match whatever style you find, and a quick–connect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
  • Line–clamping pliers, because with no petcock on this model there is no valve to shut off flow
  • Rags, a small flat screwdriver, and sockets for the seat, plastics, and rack hardware

Do this job outdoors or with the shop door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation low in the space matters far more than a cracked window above the bench. Keep every heater, grinder, charger, and cigarette out of the area entirely.

Getting the Old Line Out

Relieve the pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter briefly until the engine dies for lack of supply, switch the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Skipping this step is how people end up wearing their fuel.

Remove the seat and enough bodywork to expose the tank outlet and the hose run heading to the throttle body. Slide the drain pan under the work area and drape a rag over the first joint you separate, because even a depressurized line holds fuel that will run out. Push spring clips or worm clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the fitting. For a quick–connect coupler, press the locking tabs squarely inward and pull the collar straight off with no side leverage at all; aged plastic collars crack when you pry them.

If the hose has varnished onto a barb, twist it gently to break the bond instead of pulling hard. A stubborn end can be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away, which protects the fitting entirely. This is a 4x4 chassis, so the run passes front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers that a two–wheel–drive quad does not carry. Photograph each clip, guide, and clearance point before the old hose is fully free.

Fitting the Replacement Correctly

Cut the new hose to match the length of the old one exactly. Extra length is not insurance; it is a hose that chafes on the frame or interferes with the steering stem. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do that work dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray anywhere near the sealing surface, because any lubricant there gives pressurized fuel a path to creep past. If the hose is too stiff to slide on, dip the end in hot water for thirty seconds and try again.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly rather than crushing one side. Where the tank side uses a self–locking quick–connect, push until you hear and feel the click, then tug firmly to confirm engagement. That style needs no clamp and should never get one. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays away from the exhaust and clear of driveline components.

Confirming the Repair and Wrapping Up

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and builds pressure, giving you a chance to inspect both joints while the surrounding area is still bone dry. Wipe everything down with a clean rag, then look and feel for the first hint of wetness. Start the engine and repeat the inspection at idle, then let it run several minutes before you reinstall the plastics.

One last platform note for the 650 X MR: the fuel filter is part of the in–tank pump module rather than an inline unit you can reach on the visible hose. A perfect new line will not fix a restricted filter, so if the machine still acts starved after a clean install, the module inside the tank is where to look next.
