That means the hose holds pressure with the key on, there is no petcock lever to close, and the first move of the job is relieving that pressure rather than loosening a clamp.
Depressurizing and Setting Up Safely
Start by pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine for a few seconds until it stalls. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Only then is it reasonable to open a fitting. Even so, the hose still holds standing fuel, so a drain pan and a rag over each joint are not optional.
Position the 6x6 outdoors or with the shop door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, exactly where you will be kneeling, so airflow low in the space matters more than an open window overhead. Extinguish or shut down every ignition source, including gas water heaters and shop heaters with standing pilots, and keep a fire extinguisher where you can grab it without getting up. Gloves and eye protection go on before you start, since gasoline strips skin oils fast and stings badly if it flicks into an eye.
What You Will Want Within Reach
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and safety glasses
- A sealed, approved container for captured fuel plus a shallow pan
- Injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter, not general purpose low-pressure line
- New clamps in the correct style, and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler

The Two Ways Fuel Line Degrades

A hose that photographs perfectly well can already be compromised inside, which is why replacement intervals are worth respecting on a machine that works hard and then sits.
Recognizing a Line That Is About to Fail
- A fuel puddle or damp patch beneath the tank area after parking
- A strong gasoline smell around the machine, most obvious in the first minutes after shutdown
- Surface cracking, chalky texture, or a hardened length you can feel by squeezing along the hose
- The engine bogging under load, stumbling on acceleration, or running lean as if fuel delivery is short
- Dried dust caked in a ring at a fitting, the signature of a slow weep
Keep in mind that a pressurized leak may atomize instead of pooling. A persistent fuel odor with a dry floor underneath is a legitimate finding on an injected machine, not something to explain away.
Pulling the Old Hose Off
With pressure relieved, remove the seat and side plastics to expose the tank outlet and follow the run forward toward the throttle body. Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the joint. A quick-connect coupler needs its locking tabs pressed evenly and the fitting pulled straight off — prying sideways splits collars that have aged in the weather. Rotate the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than yanking, and if it will not budge, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it off the fitting.
Document the routing before it disappears. With six driven wheels, this chassis carries more driveline hardware and additional frame structure than a standard 4x4 Outlander, and the hose typically threads a longer path with extra clearance points to respect. A few photos of the clips now save guesswork later.
Fitting the New Line and Confirming It Seals
Cut the replacement to match the original length precisely, since a long hose loops into structure or drifts toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near the sealing surface — lubricant there is an invitation for pressurized fuel to creep out. A brief soak of the hose end in hot water softens it enough to seat without help.
Set clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly instead of crushing one edge. If the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until you hear the click and confirm with a firm pull; that fitting wants no clamp. Return the hose to every factory clip so it stays away from heat and rotating parts.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump loads the circuit while everything is still dry. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and look closely for seepage, then start the engine and check again at idle before reassembling.
