A fuel line does not have to fail completely to cause problems. A hardened hose that seeps under pressure will foul your garage with gasoline smell, cost you fuel, and eventually crack all the way through at the worst possible moment. On a 2021 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS the hose runs from a pump inside the tank forward to the throttle body, because this machine is fuel injected and carries no petcock underneath the tank. Bleeding pressure out of that circuit is therefore step one, not draining a bowl.
Identifying the System on This Grizzly
Three things follow from fuel injection. Inside, ethanol blended fuel does the damage. Alcohol holds water in suspension and gradually attacks the liner, while fuel that sits through a long layup leaves gum and varnish as its light ends evaporate. Those deposits restrict flow and break loose into the injection system as fine debris. Since the interior is invisible, hose age deserves as much weight in your decision as visible cracking does.
Symptoms That Give the Line Away
Start with your nose. A gasoline odor that hangs around the seat well after shutdown almost always means fuel is escaping somewhere. Look next for liquid pooling on the skid plate, a wet stripe running down a frame tube, or a dark ring of dust cemented at a fitting where fuel has repeatedly seeped and dried. Run your fingers along the entire hose: fine crazing and hard, glassy sections both indicate the compound is spent, while a soft or ballooned area near a barb means the liner has failed.
Drivability tells the same story. Bogging when you snap the throttle, a lean stumble climbing a long grade, or an engine acting as though the tank were nearly empty all fit a compromised delivery line. On this injected Grizzly a pressure side pinhole often sprays a fine mist that evaporates before it drips, so trust a persistent smell even with a dry floor and inspect with the key cycled on and the pump running.
Tools, Preparation, and Working Around Fuel
Lay out gloves and eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed container approved for gasoline, injection rated hose matched to the factory inside diameter, new clamps in the correct style, a quick connect release tool if your fittings need one, line clamping pliers to substitute for the missing petcock, a razor blade, rags, and the hand tools for the seat and body panels.
Then take the vapor issue seriously, because it is the genuine hazard in this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level right where you kneel, and it can build up well before the smell becomes alarming. Roll the machine outside or open the garage completely with a fan low to the ground moving air away from you. Shut off pilot lights on any nearby appliance, keep grinders and hot work lights out of the space, disconnect the battery negative before opening a fitting, and keep the fuel container capped except while pouring.
Removal Through Final Inspection
Relieve pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse from the block under the seat and then trying to start the engine so it consumes the remaining fuel in the line. Key off, battery disconnected. Remove the seat and center plastics, photograph the routing and clips, then position the pan and drape a rag over the joint you are opening. Slide the clamps back along the hose before breaking the connection. If the rubber has bonded to a barb, cut it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than levering on a weathered fitting. Quick connects release with tabs squeezed squarely and a straight pull, and as the hose comes free, confirm exactly how it passed the front differential bracing.
Cut the new hose to the original length and seat each end fully onto its barb, right to the shoulder, working dry throughout. No grease, oil, or silicone belongs on a fuel fitting, because a film there gives pressurized gasoline a path around the seal. A hose end dipped in hot water for half a minute pushes on without prying. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, or where a self locking coupler is used, push until it clicks and tug to confirm the latch caught, since that fitting takes no clamp. Route the hose back through every original clip, clear of exhaust heat and the front driveline.
Reinstall the fuse and battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without starting so the pump pressurizes the line while everything is still dry and easy to read. Inspect both joints, fire the engine, and check again at idle before the bodywork returns.
