Most owners do not go looking for a fuel line problem. They notice something else first: a whiff of raw gas when they walk into the shed, a dark stain on the concrete beneath the frame, or a stumble at part throttle that was not there last season. On a 2021 KingQuad 400ASi those three complaints often trace back to the same short run of rubber between the tank and the throttle body. Catching it at the smell stage instead of the roadside stage is the whole point of this job.

Work through the list below before you order anything. A hose that fails one of these checks should be replaced regardless of how many hours are on the machine.

  • Fuel odor that lingers around the machine after shutdown, strongest in the first few minutes while the system still holds pressure
  • A wet ring, drip trail, or dust caked into a damp patch anywhere along the line or at a fitting
  • Hairline surface cracks that open up when you flex the hose between two fingers
  • A hose that feels stiff, glassy, or chalky rather than supple
  • Bogging under load, a hesitation off idle, or lean surging as if the engine cannot get enough fuel
  • A hose end that has swelled, ballooned, or gone soft and gummy right at the barb

Confirming What You Are Working With

The lowercase letter at the end of this model designation matters. The ASi is the fuel-injected version of the KingQuad 400, which means there is no petcock or fuel valve tucked under the tank to shut off flow. Instead, a pump lives inside the tank, feeds a pressurized line back to the throttle body, and holds residual pressure in that line even after the key is off. Nothing about this job is unmanageable, but you cannot approach it the way you would a gravity-fed carbureted quad. Pressure gets relieved first, always.

This is also a 4x4 chassis with the automatic CVT drivetrain, so there is front differential hardware, extra frame structure, and a driveshaft tunnel that a two-wheel-drive machine simply does not have. The fuel line routes around that hardware through factory clips and clearance points. Note where each clip sits before anything comes loose, because getting the new hose back into the same path is what keeps it away from hot exhaust and moving driveline parts.

Why Perfectly Good Rubber Turns Brittle

Fuel hose does not wear out from use so much as it ages out. The plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible slowly migrate out of the hose wall, and once they are gone the material behaves like hard plastic. Heat cycling from the air and oil cooled single accelerates this, and so does frame flex on rough ground, which works tiny surface fissures deeper with every ride.

Climate plays a real part. Riders in dry, high desert conditions watch hoses harden noticeably faster because low ambient humidity pulls moisture out of the rubber from the outside in. Ethanol blended pump gas attacks from the opposite direction. Left sitting in the line for months, the alcohol content pulls in water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, so a hose can look fine on the outside while shedding material toward the injector. Age is the honest indicator here, not appearance.

Gather Everything, Then Talk About Ventilation

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils fast and carries additives you do not want soaking in
  • Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
  • Fresh clamps in the correct style for the fittings you find
  • Line clamping pliers to pinch off any low pressure section, because this machine has no fuel valve
  • An approved sealed container for captured fuel, plus a shallow drain pan
  • Shop rags, a small flat blade screwdriver, and a socket set for the seat, plastics, and any tank hardware
  • Safety glasses, since a pressurized fitting can spit when it releases

Here is the safety note that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, which is exactly where a water heater pilot, a shop heater, or a battery charger tends to live. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, get low level air moving, kill every ignition source in the space, and keep an extinguisher within reach. Do not smoke, and do not run a grinder anywhere nearby.

Taking the Old Hose Off Cleanly

Relieve system pressure before touching a fitting. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse block, crank the engine until it stalls out, then switch the key off and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove the seat and whatever bodywork is needed to expose the tank outlet and the run of hose heading toward the throttle body.

Slide the drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the first joint you open, because even a depressurized line still holds fuel. Slide worm gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the connection. If you find a locking quick-connect coupler at the tank, squeeze the tabs squarely and pull straight off without levering sideways, since aged plastic collars crack easily. Twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond at the barb rather than hauling on it, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of damaging the fitting.

Fitting the New Line

Cut the replacement to match the old hose exactly. Extra length is not insurance, it is a chafe point that will rub a frame tube or foul the steering. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Skip grease, oil, silicone, and thread sealant entirely, because any lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path to creep past. If a hose end fights you, dip it briefly in hot water to soften the rubber.

Seat the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly rather than crushing them. A self-locking quick-connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged firmly to verify it latched, with no clamp added. Return the hose to every original clip and guide, confirming clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline hardware before the plastics go back.

Proving the Repair Before You Ride

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect dry joints for the first sign of weeping. Feel around each connection with a clean white rag, then start the engine and check again at idle, and once more after a few minutes of warm running.

One last thing worth knowing about the injected KingQuad 400ASi: the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline piece you can see. New hose does nothing for a clogged filter, so if the machine still acts starved after a leak-free install, that in-tank unit is where you look next.
