A Hands-On Inspection Routine
Let the machine sit overnight on clean ground and check underneath in the morning for a damp patch or small puddle. Then pull the seat and enough bodywork to see the hose along its full run. Work down its length with a gloved hand, squeezing every few inches. Fresh hose compresses and rebounds; aged hose feels rigid, sounds hollow when tapped, and often shows a glazed or chalky finish.
Bend each section slightly and look for hairline cracks opening on the outside of the curve, which is where the material is stretched most. How the Engine Tells You
Fuel delivery problems show up in the way the XP 1000 runs. Bogging as you roll into the throttle, a lean surge at higher rpm, or hesitation that feels like an empty tank with the gauge still reading half are all consistent with a restricted or leaking supply line. Symptoms that come and go with terrain are worth noting, because a cracked hose can open slightly as the chassis flexes and seal back up on smooth ground.
Do not chase a fueling complaint into the hose alone, though. On this platform the fuel filter sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline on the visible line, so a restricted filter produces similar symptoms and is a separate repair.
The Reasons Hoses Deteriorate
Rubber fuel line depends on plasticizers to remain flexible, and those compounds work their way out of the wall over years of service. Heat cycling from the ProStar twin accelerates the loss, leaving material that is hard and prone to splitting. Vibration on a heavy two-up chassis then concentrates that brittleness at the bends.
Where the machine is kept matters too. In dry, low-humidity regions the surrounding air pulls moisture from the rubber continuously and hoses harden years earlier than they would elsewhere. Ethanol-blended pump gas works from the inside instead, drawing water into the fuel and slowly breaking down the liner, particularly when the ATV sits for months with fuel in the system. The two processes together explain why a hose can look acceptable and still be finished.
What to Have Ready

- A drain pan and a sealed, fuel-rated container
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter
- New clamps matching the original style, pliers for spring clips, and a quick-connect release tool

Ventilation is the safety step that genuinely protects you. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor where heaters, pilot lights, and cords live, so work outdoors or with the door fully open and let air move low through the space. Keep every ignition source out of the area and cap the fuel you drain rather than leaving it open beside the machine.
Freeing the Existing Hose
Pressure comes out first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a second or two until it stalls, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Slide a pan under the work area and put a rag over the first fitting, because a depressurized hose still holds fuel.
Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the joint itself. A locking quick-connect releases when both tabs are pressed evenly and the coupler is drawn straight off; prying it sideways cracks the collar. Twist a varnish-bonded hose gently to break it free of the barb, and slit a truly stuck one lengthwise with a knife instead of forcing it. Note the routing as it comes out. The all-wheel drive front differential and driveshaft crowd the area ahead of the engine, and the hose passes those on a defined path through several clips.
Installation and Final Verification
Cut the new hose to the original length so it neither pulls tight nor sags against the frame. Seat each end fully onto its barb, working dry — no grease, oil, or silicone belongs on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface lets pressurized fuel creep past the clamp. Dip a tight end briefly in hot water if it resists. Set the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, and let a self-locking quick-connect click home with no clamp at all, confirming it with a firm pull. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it stays clear of exhaust heat and rotating parts.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line while the fittings are still dry, making the first sign of seepage obvious. Wipe both joints, start the engine, and inspect at idle and again after a few throttle blips. Several minutes of dry running earns the bodywork back, and a quick look underneath after your first short ride confirms the connections hold once the chassis has worked.
