Owners of the 2021 Brute Force 750 4x4i occasionally find a fuel smell in the garage or a soft spot in throttle response and assume the worst about the injector or pump. More often the culprit is the least glamorous component in the system: the rubber supply hose. This machine runs Kawasaki digital fuel injection with the pump mounted inside the tank, which means no petcock, a circuit that holds pressure after shutdown, and a procedure that differs meaningfully from a carbureted quad.
Staging the Job Before You Touch a Fitting
Set out everything below first, because you do not want to be searching for a clamp with an open fuel line in your other hand:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- Fuel hose rated for injection pressure, sized to the factory inside diameter rather than guessed at
- New clamps in the correct style, or a small assortment kit covering both ends
- Line–clamping pliers, which serve as the shutoff this model does not provide
- A sealed fuel–approved container and a shallow catch pan
- Sockets, a small flat blade, a razor knife, and plenty of clean rags
Gasoline deserves genuine caution here. The vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts down and pools at floor level exactly where you will be positioned while reaching under the tank. Work outdoors or with the shop door fully open, put a fan on the ground moving air out, and remove every ignition source from the space, including water heater pilots and hot filament lights. Any rag that gets soaked goes outside right away.
The Real Reason Old Hose Splits
Rubber fuel line does not wear out from use so much as cure with age. Heat cycling off the 749cc V–twin steadily drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, and once they are gone the material behaves like stiff plastic instead of flexible rubber. Vibration takes it from there, opening fine fissures in a surface that can no longer move with the chassis, geneRally at the bend closest to a fitting.
Regional conditions matter more than most riders expect. In dry country, low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside considerably faster than in a humid climate. Ethanol–blended fuel goes to work from the inside, swelling and softening the liner while attracting water that leaves gum behind. When a Brute Force sits for months at a stretch with E10 in the system, both processes run unchecked, and the result is a hose that photographs fine but is shedding material toward the injector.
What a Dying Hose Looks Like
These are the indicators to act on:
- Fuel odor lingering around the front of the quad, strongest in the minutes right after shutdown
- A damp spot, drip trail, or small puddle on the skid plate or garage floor
- Surface cracks, a chalky cast, or a section that feels rigid when you squeeze it
- A ring of dust cemented to a fitting by fuel that seeped and evaporated
- Bogging under load, hesitation on hard throttle, or the machine acting starved for fuel at higher rpm
Do not rely on finding a puddle. On a pressurized system, escaping fuel commonly atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a clean floor tells you almost nothing. Smell and a hands–on check of the full hose run are far more dependable.
Relieving Pressure and Extracting the Old Line
Begin by bleeding the system. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine in short bursts until it stalls and will not restart, shut the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Cracking a fitting on a live pressurized circuit is how people end up with fuel in their eyes, and this sequence takes about sixty seconds.
Remove the seat and the front plastics blocking the tank outlet and the hose run toward the throttle body. Slide the pan underneath and cup a rag around each fitting as you loosen it, because the hose holds residual fuel even fully depressurized. Push worm–gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before rotating anything. Locking quick–connect couplers require pressing the tabs squarely inward and pulling the fitting straight off; levering sideways cracks collars that have grown brittle with heat and age.
If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, twist gently to break the seal rather than hauling on it. When the hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off in strips to keep the fitting intact. Take note of every clip and guide as the old run comes out. Selectable four–wheel–drive on this model adds front differential hardware and additional frame structure near the hose path, giving it more clearance points to navigate than a two–wheel–drive quad, and a couple of photographs make reassembly straightforward.
Seating the New Hose and Checking Your Work
Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Excess hose rubs against frame edges or catches steering hardware, while a short piece leaves both barbs under constant tension. Slide each end fully home on its fitting, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no business on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface is precisely what allows pressurized fuel to creep out beneath the clamp. Dip a stiff end in hot water for a few seconds if it resists.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber wall. If your machine uses a self–locking quick–connect at the tank, push until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to verify it has latched; that fitting seals itself and needs no clamp. Reinstall the hose in every original clip so the finished run stays clear of the driveline, steering components, and exhaust heat.
For the leak check, refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose, giving you a calm inspection window at both joints with the engine off. Wipe them dry, look closely, and feel for beading. Then start the engine, watch at idle, blip the throttle several times, and inspect again before any bodywork goes back on. One last point specific to the 2021 Brute Force 750 4x4i: its fuel filter is integrated into the in–tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, so if fuel delivery still feels weak after a leak–free installation, that module is the next thing to investigate.
