Nobody plans to deal with fuel plumbing until the driveway smells like a gas station. A 2021 Brute Force 300 keeps that repair mercifully simple, though, with a short hose run you can reach the moment the seat comes off. Do it once and you will know exactly what to check on every future inspection.

Confirm the Carburetor, Then Find the Petcock

Everything about this procedure follows from one fact: the Brute Force 300 is carbureted. That means a petcock at the tank gives you a hard shut off for the fuel supply, and once the valve is closed nothing is feeding the hose. Fuel travels the rest of the way to the carburetor inlet on gravity alone, with no pump, no pressure, and no need to pull a fuse or cycle a key before opening a fitting. Both hose ends attach to plain barbed spigots with clamps rather than the self-locking couplers found on injected machines.

The carburetor also has a float bowl drain screw, and using it makes the whole job cleaner. A short length of clear tubing on the drain, run into a container, empties the bowl so the carb end comes apart nearly dry. Because this is a 2x4 chassis, there is no front differential or extra driveline hardware to route around, so the hose stays short and easy to see — better access than a four-wheel-drive utility quad offers for the same repair.

Where Fuel Hose Loses Its Flexibility

Fresh hose stays soft because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those slowly work their way out over years of service. Heat is the accelerant, so the length of hose nearest the air-cooled 271cc single hardens fastest. Once the material has gone rigid, ordinary vibration and the flex of the frame over rough ground start splitting it at the bends and under the clamps.

Where you ride matters. In dry, arid areas, low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and the outer surface turns chalky and brittle earlier than it would in a humid climate. Ethanol-blended gasoline is the other half of the equation, holding moisture against the inner liner and gradually breaking it down so that fine material sheds toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits still causes the most harm, which is why a machine parked for months with a partial tank often needs hose ahead of one ridden regularly.

Six Things That Say Replace It

  • A fuel stain or slow drip under the left side of the quad after it has sat overnight
  • Gasoline odor around the front bodywork that lingers regardless of ventilation
  • Fine cracks that open when you flex the hose between your fingers
  • A hose that feels stiff and glassy, or conversely soft, spongy, and swollen
  • A crusted ring of dust at a fitting, marking fuel that has seeped and evaporated many times
  • Bogging under throttle, a lean stumble, or the engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank

Bench Setup and Handling Gasoline

Collect gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a shallow catch pan, correct diameter replacement hose cut slightly long, new clamps, clear tubing for the bowl drain, a flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a small socket set, and a stack of clean rags. Reusing the original clamps is the single most common reason a new hose still weeps, so plan on fresh ones.

The gasoline itself is the genuine hazard here. Its vapor is heavier than air, meaning it drifts down and collects at floor level where a water heater pilot light, a shop heater, or a dropped tool can ignite it. An open window at head height accomplishes nothing. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, keep an extinguisher within reach, and keep grinding, welding, and any open flame out of the area entirely. Spread spilled fuel out to evaporate in the open rather than mopping it up into rags left in a closed bin.

Draining Down and Pulling the Hose

Turn the petcock off and let things settle. Remove the seat plus any plastic panel obstructing your view of the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Fit the clear tube onto the float bowl drain, direct it into your container, back the screw out, empty the bowl, and close it again. Slide the pan under the work area and lay a rag over the fitting you plan to open first, because the hose retains fuel even with the valve shut.

Loosen each clamp and walk it well back along the hose. Break the varnish bond by rotating the hose on its barb rather than hauling it straight off; that spares the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet from a load they were never meant to take. If the hose has effectively glued itself in place, slit it lengthwise with a razor blade and peel it away in two pieces. Before the old line is fully clear, note its routing and every frame clip it passes through so the replacement follows the same path.

Fresh Line, New Clamps, No Lubricant

Trim the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed. Excess length chafes against the frame or folds into a kink that chokes flow, while a short piece keeps both fittings under permanent tension. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all create a leak path on a fuel fitting and let the hose creep off the barb as the machine vibrates, so keep lubricants completely away from the sealing surfaces. A tight end slides on easily after a few seconds in hot water.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly. You want snug, not crushed — a clamp that cuts into the hose wall creates the exact failure you set out to fix. Route the hose back through its original clip so it stays clear of hot surfaces and moving parts.

The Two Stage Leak Check

Open the petcock and wait a full minute for the line to fill and the float bowl to top off. Wipe both joints with a dry rag and inspect them under bright light, looking for even the smallest bead forming at a barb. That is stage one. Stage two is with the engine running: fire it up, let it idle for several minutes, and check both connections again while everything is warm and vibrating, since heat and movement expose a marginal joint that looked perfect cold. When both ends stay completely dry through both checks, reinstall the bodywork and seat and take the 2021 Brute Force 300 back out.
