Parts and Tools That Actually Matter
- Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure and matched to the factory inside diameter, bought a bit long so you can trim to an exact fit. General purpose low pressure hose intended for gravity feed service is the wrong part here and fails badly under pressure.
- New clamps in the same style as the originals, sized properly to the hose rather than close enough
- A quick-disconnect release tool, in case the tank outlet uses a locking coupler instead of a barb and clamp
- Line-clamping pliers, which take over the job a petcock would do if this machine had one
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A sealed, fuel-approved container plus a drain pan wider than seems necessary
- Absorbent rags, a razor knife, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and sockets for the seat and side plastics
Understanding What Feeds the Engine
The 2021 CFORCE 500 EPS is fuel-injected. An electric pump inside the fuel tank pressurizes a supply line running to the throttle body, and there is no petcock valve underneath the tank to spin closed before you begin. Shut down space heaters and any appliance with a standing pilot, unplug battery chargers, and set aside grinders and drills that throw sparks. Keep an extinguisher within reach, wear gloves so raw fuel is not soaking into your skin, and carry saturated rags outdoors as you generate them.
How Fuel Hose Deteriorates
Two separate processes work against the rubber simultaneously. On the outside, engine heat cycles and sunlight strip out the plasticizers that keep hose pliable, so a line that once compressed easily becomes stiff and eventually glassy. Dry air makes it worse by drawing moisture from the hose wall, which is why the same 500 EPS shows cracked line noticeably sooner in arid country than in a humid climate. Once the material is rigid, ordinary chassis flex over rough terrain turns surface checking into splits that leak under pressure.
On the inside, ethanol-blended pump gasoline attracts water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and the damage compounds whenever the quad sits with fuel standing in the hose. What results is a line hardening externally while softening internally and releasing fine material toward the injector. Since none of that inner damage is visible, replacing hose based on age beats waiting for a crack to show.
Signs Worth Acting On
Watch for a gasoline smell that lingers near the machine, strongest during the first minutes after shutdown while pressure is still present. Look underneath for a wet patch, small puddle, or dried stain, and check the fittings for a caked ring of dust where fuel seeped and evaporated. Squeeze the hose along its length: healthy line yields and rebounds, while worn line feels hard and hollow or shows crazing at a bend. Performance symptoms count too, including bogging under load, a flat spot when the throttle opens quickly, an engine acting starved with plenty of fuel aboard, and long cranking on a cold start that hints at pressure bleeding down overnight. On an injected machine a pressurized leak often evaporates before it drips, so a persistent smell over a dry floor is still meaningful.
Removing the Old Hose
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine until it stalls, then key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Take the seat off along with any panels covering the tank outlet, and follow the hose forward to the throttle body so you know its whole run before touching a clamp.
Place the drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the fitting you open first, since standing fuel remains in the line even after bleeding pressure. Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back before twisting the joint loose. Quick-connect couplers want the tabs pressed squarely and the fitting pulled straight off, never levered, because collars grow brittle and split under side load. Where varnish has bonded old hose to a barb, twist gently to break it free, and slit the hose lengthwise with a razor if it refuses so the fitting underneath stays intact.
Record the routing as it comes apart. This is a 4x4 with selectable two-wheel drive, so front differential and driveline hardware create clearance points a two-wheel-drive quad does not have. Photograph each clip and guide before the hose is fully out.
Installation and the Final Leak Check
Trim the new hose to the original length exactly, because extra slack chafes on frame tubes or drifts toward hot exhaust. Seat each end fully onto its barb and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone create a film on the sealing surface that lets pressurized fuel creep out past the hose, so keep lubricant away entirely; hot water is the correct softener for a stiff end.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly without crushing the rubber. If a self-locking quick-connect is fitted at the tank, push until the collar clicks and tug firmly to confirm engagement, leaving that joint clampless. Route the hose back through every factory retainer.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting so the pump pressurizes the circuit while both joints are dry and easy to read. Wipe each connection, then run the engine and inspect again at idle and under light throttle before the plastics go on. Because the filter sits inside the tank with the pump, fresh hose will not clear a restriction there, so continued delivery trouble after a clean install points to the in-tank assembly.
