Do the steps in the wrong order on a 2021 Renegade 1000R X MR and you get a face full of gasoline; do them in the right order and it is a calm afternoon with hand tools. The reason is the fuel system itself. This machine uses the fuel-injected 976cc Rotax V-twin with an electric pump inside the tank, so the supply hose holds pressure after shutdown, and unlike a carbureted quad there is no petcock to close and no float bowl to drain.

Do These Steps in Order

The correct progression is: relieve the fuel pressure, isolate the battery, remove the bodywork, position a catch pan, then open the fittings. Reversing any of those means working on a live pressurized circuit. Start by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay and cranking the engine for a second or two until it stalls as the residual pressure is consumed. Switch the key off, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and only then begin removing the seat and side plastics. Slide the drain pan into place and lay a rag over the first joint you intend to separate, because even a depressurized hose retains fuel.

The Aging Process Inside and Out

Fuel hose is consumed by two independent processes. On the outside, the plasticizers that keep the rubber elastic slowly migrate out of the material, and the heat this V-twin puts under the bodywork accelerates their departure. The hose becomes stiff and glassy, stops absorbing chassis vibration, and starts to crack at the bends where stress concentrates. Dry, low-humidity climates hasten this, since arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall.

On the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline degrades the liner. The alcohol content holds water in suspension and gradually breaks that liner down, softening it and leaving gum deposits. An X MR that sits for stretches between mud runs with fuel in the system gives that reaction every advantage. Neither process is visible in its early stages, which is why replacing a hose based on years in service is sound practice rather than overkill.

Field Signs of a Bad Line

Wash and dry the machine first so you can actually read the evidence, then look for:

  • Gasoline pooling on the skid plate or a fresh damp patch on clean concrete after the quad has been parked
  • A fuel smell hanging around the tank that will not clear, strongest right after key-off while pressure is still trapped
  • Hairline cracks at a bend, a chalky gray surface, or a stretch of hose that feels rigid rather than springy
  • The engine bogging under throttle, breaking up lean at higher rpm, or acting as though it were low on fuel
  • A dirt ring at a fitting and clamp screws that have rusted or seized, both routine on a machine that operates in water

Since the circuit is pressurized, a fine leak often atomizes and evaporates rather than dripping, so a persistent odor with nothing on the ground is still worth chasing down.

What You Will Need on Hand

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves, because gasoline strips skin oils in seconds
  • An approved container for captured fuel and a wide drain pan
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not low-pressure carburetor line
  • A full set of new clamps in the matching style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers to close off a low-pressure section, standing in for the petcock this model does not have
  • Hand tools for the bodywork, penetrating oil for corroded clamp screws, a razor knife, and clean rags

Ventilation deserves real attention rather than a passing mention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downward and pools at floor level, right where you are kneeling, and it will sit there until air movement clears it. Work outdoors or with the shop door fully open and keep air circulating low. Unplug chargers and heaters, extinguish any pilot flame, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach.

Detaching the Original Hose

Trace the line from the tank outlet to the throttle body and note every clip that secures it. On this selectable four-wheel-drive chassis the run passes front differential hardware and additional frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive quad would not carry, so expect a couple more retaining points than you might anticipate. Photograph the path and the clip positions while the old hose is still installed.

Move each clamp well back before applying force to a barb. Give a corroded worm-gear screw penetrating oil and a few minutes; if it still resists, cut the clamp rather than rounding the head. Spring clips open with pliers. A quick-connect coupler releases when you press its tabs evenly and pull straight off, and it cracks if you pry it sideways, since aged plastic collars are brittle. Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle rotation, and where a hose end has bonded itself in place, slit it lengthwise and peel it away. Clear packed mud from the surrounding frame while you have the room.

Fitting the New Line and Clamping It

Cut the replacement to the original length exactly. Slack lets the hose rest against frame tubes or front drive components, and on a mud machine that contact turns abrasive in a hurry. Push each end all the way onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting undermine the seal the clamp is meant to create, giving pressurized fuel a path out, so keep lubricants off entirely. Dip a reluctant hose end in hot water for a few seconds instead.

Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each connection and tighten them evenly, snug without biting into the rubber. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push it home until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to confirm engagement; that joint takes no clamp. Return the hose to every original clip, keeping it clear of exhaust heat and rotating hardware.

Proving the Job Before You Ride

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, letting you inspect both joints while the area is still clean and dry. Wipe the fittings with a fresh rag and watch closely for a bead. Then start the V-twin and check again at idle, following the entire run with a flashlight while heat and vibration are present. Several minutes of leak-free running and a slow lap of the property should come before the plastics go back on, and one more inspection after the first real ride is time well spent.

Last thing worth knowing: the fuel filter on this injected X MR is built into the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you can service it. Fresh hose cures hose problems and nothing more, so if the engine still acts fuel-starved after a careful installation, the in-tank assembly is where to continue.
