Hose is the cheapest insurance on any fuel system, and on a 2020 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS it is also one of the easier jobs to get right the first time. What separates a clean repair from a mess in the garage is knowing the machine before you start. This Grizzly uses electronic fuel injection with the pump living inside the tank, meaning the delivery hose is pressurized any time the key is on and there is no fuel valve to close. That reality dictates the order of every step below.
Depressurizing and Getting the Line Off
The first job is removing pressure from the circuit. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the block beneath the seat, then attempt to start the engine so it burns through whatever remains in the hose. Switch the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and center bodywork to expose the tank outlet, and follow the run forward toward the throttle body, taking photographs of every clip and clearance point before anything moves.
Slide a drain pan under the connection and lay a rag over the fitting, since even a depressurized hose holds residual fuel that will otherwise run down the frame. Ease the clamps well back along the hose before breaking the joint. Where fuel varnish has bonded aged rubber to a barb, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it off instead of pulling hard on a fitting that has weathered several seasons. Quick connect couplers release with the tabs squeezed evenly and a straight pull, never a rocking motion. Since this is a 4x4 with power steering, the hose threads past front differential and steering hardware, so confirm which side of each brace it travels on while it is still in place.
What Wears a Fuel Hose Out
Two independent processes are at work. The outside of the hose loses the plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible, driven off by engine heat, sunlight, and simple years on the machine. Once the wall has gone hard, the flexing that comes with rough terrain opens cracks. Low humidity accelerates the whole thing by drawing residual moisture out of the material, so owners in dry country tend to replace hose sooner than others.
The inside fails on a separate track. Ethanol blended pump gas holds water in suspension and slowly breaks down the liner, and gasoline left standing for months leaves gum and varnish behind as its lighter fractions evaporate. Those deposits both restrict flow and shed particles toward the injector. None of that shows up in a visual inspection, which is why the age of the hose matters as much as how it looks.
Symptoms Worth Acting On
- A gasoline smell that lingers around the seat area after the engine has been shut down
- Fuel pooling beneath the center of the chassis, or a wet streak down a frame tube
- Surface crazing, a chalky texture, or a hardened section that no longer compresses
- A soft, swollen spot at a fitting, which points to liner breakdown
- Bogging on acceleration, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or symptoms that mimic a low tank
An injected machine adds a wrinkle. Fuel escaping a pressurized line frequently atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a strong odor with a dry floor is still a genuine leak. Cycle the key so the pump runs, then work along the hose with a flashlight and a clean rag until the wet spot reveals itself.
Parts, Tools, and Real Gasoline Safety
Have all of this within arm's reach before you begin:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves along with eye protection
- A drain pan plus a sealed container approved for gasoline
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the factory inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct style, and a release tool if your quick connect requires one
- Line clamping pliers, which take the place of the petcock this model does not have
- A razor blade, plenty of rags, and hand tools for the seat and side panels
Ventilation deserves genuine attention on this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools near the floor exactly where you are kneeling, and it can accumulate faster than your nose registers it. Work outdoors or with the garage door fully open and a fan low to the ground moving air away from you, shut off pilot lights on nearby appliances, and keep hot work lights, grinders, and anything else that sparks well clear while fittings are open.
Fitting the New Hose
Measure the old hose and cut the replacement to match. Surplus length seems harmless on the bench but ends up chafing a frame tube or drifting toward exhaust heat once everything is reassembled. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and complete the installation dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a route past the sealing surface and can carry contamination downstream, so leave the fittings clean. Thirty seconds in hot water softens a stiff hose end enough to seat by hand.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. If the tank end uses a self locking quick connect, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to verify the latch engaged, because that fitting works without a clamp by design. Reinstall the hose through every original clip so it stays clear of the front driveline and hot surfaces.
Proving It Dry Before You Ride
Refit the fuel pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and builds pressure in the line, which lets you check both joints while the surrounding area is still clean and any seepage is obvious. Wipe each fitting with a fresh rag between cycles.
Once the joints look dry, start the Grizzly and let it idle for a couple of minutes while you inspect again, paying particular attention to the tank end where access is tightest. Only after that should the bodywork and seat return. Worth remembering as you finish: the fuel filter on this injected model is inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than an inline unit on the hose you just replaced, so if fuel delivery still feels weak, that module is the logical next step.
