Fittings, Clamps, and Couplers on an Injected KingQuad

Open up a 2020 KingQuad 400FSi and the connections you find determine how the job goes. Because this is the fuel-injected KingQuad 400 rather than a carbureted machine, the hose between the tank and the throttle body is a pressurized line, and injected systems are more likely to use a locking quick-connect coupler at the tank end than a simple clamped barb. A coupler like that is released by depressing its tabs squarely and pulling straight off, never by levering it to one side, because the plastic collar hardens with age and cracks under that kind of load.

Where you do find a clamped barb, note the clamp style before you disturb it. A worm gear band and a spring clip are not interchangeable in feel, and reusing a clamp that has already taken a set is a common cause of a slow weep after an otherwise clean repair. Plan on new clamps in the correct style, and remember that a self-locking coupler takes no clamp at all.

No Petcock Means a Different First Step

There is no fuel valve under the tank on this machine. A pump inside the tank does the moving, which means the supply hose carries pressure and continues to hold it after the key is switched off. Before a single fitting is opened, that pressure has to come off: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse block, crank the engine until it stalls from starvation, turn the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Line clamping pliers give you a shutoff for any low pressure section.

The 4x4 driveline and five speed semi-automatic gearbox do not change the procedure, but the front differential hardware and additional frame structure do crowd the hose path. The factory clips hold the line clear of exhaust heat and rotating components, so photograph their locations before the old hose comes free.

How the Rubber Deteriorates

Fuel hose ages out on a calendar rather than wearing out from use. The plasticizers that keep the rubber pliable slowly migrate out of the hose wall, and when enough are gone the material cracks where it once flexed. Repeated heat cycles from the engine speed that up, and the vibration and chassis flex a utility quad soaks up over rough ground drive hairline cracks into leak paths.

Climate and fuel chemistry decide the pace. Dry, low humidity conditions pull moisture out of the rubber and stiffen it from the outer surface inward. Ethanol blended pump gas attacks the inner liner from the opposite direction, absorbing water and degrading the rubber whenever fuel sits still in the line for weeks. A hose caught between the two can present a clean exterior while shedding material toward the injector, which is why age carries more weight than appearance.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • A fuel smell that hangs around the machine, strongest right after shutdown while pressure remains
  • Drips, stains, or a damp streak on the skid plate or the floor under the frame
  • Fine cracks that open when you flex the hose, or a glassy, chalky feel when you pinch it
  • Grime caked onto a wet ring at a fitting, the usual sign of a slow seep
  • Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or lean surging that mimics a low fuel condition
  • A hose end that has swelled or gone soft where it slides onto the barb

Since the supply side is pressurized, a small leak often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a strong odor with clean concrete underneath is still worth chasing down.

Supplies and a Word About Fumes

Have gloves and eye protection, hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, new clamps, line clamping pliers, a quick-connect release tool if needed, an approved sealed fuel container, a shallow catch pan, a socket set, a small flat blade screwdriver, a razor knife, and clean rags laid out before you open anything.

Then take the vapor seriously, because that is the real risk rather than the liquid. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air, so they sink and travel across the floor toward water heater pilots, propane heaters, and battery charger contacts. Work outdoors or with the overhead door completely open, move air at ground level, and shut off every flame and spark source in the space. Keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the container between pours, and step outside for fresh air if the fumes build.

Pulling the Old Line and Fitting the New One

With pressure relieved and the battery disconnected, remove the seat and any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run. Set the catch pan underneath and lay a rag over the joint you are opening, because residual fuel remains even after the pressure is gone. Slide clamps well back before breaking a connection, release a quick-connect by its tabs, and break the varnish bond on a stuck barb with a gentle twist. If a hose has effectively welded itself in place, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of gouging the fitting.

Cut the replacement to match the removed piece exactly. Surplus hose chafes on a frame tube or interferes at full steering lock, and a short piece pulls at its fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, working dry the entire time. Nothing lubricating belongs on a fuel connection, because grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing face is exactly what lets pressurized fuel creep out from under a clamp. Soften a tight end in hot water instead. Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly to firm, leave a self-locking coupler unclamped once it clicks and holds against a tug, and restore the hose to every original clip with verified clearance from exhaust and driveline.

Confirming It Is Dry

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump brings the line up to pressure while the joints are still dry. Wipe each connection with a clean pale rag so any trace of seepage stands out. Start the engine and inspect at idle, then take a slow lap and check a final time with the machine warm before the plastics go back on for good.

One closing note on this platform. The fuel filter on the injected KingQuad 400FSi is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline element on the hose you just replaced, so new line will not clear a restricted filter. Should the machine still run starved after a leak-free installation, that assembly is where to look next.
