Owners often assume fuel line work requires special tools or a lift. On a 2020 Brute Force 300 it requires neither. This is a compact, carbureted utility quad with a short, visible fuel path, and the hardest part of the whole repair is usually persuading the old hose to let go of its fitting.

Getting the Right Hose in Your Hand

Buy the correct inside diameter for this model and buy it a bit long so you can trim to fit. Diameter is not a place to improvise: hose that is too large will not seal on the barb even with a clamp crushing it, and hose that is too small stretches thin and splits at the fitting. Length matters almost as much, since a run that is too long chafes on the frame or folds into a kink, and one that is too short pulls at both connections every time the chassis flexes.

While you are ordering, add new clamps. The originals on a machine several years into service have taken a heat set and lost tension, and reusing them is the most common reason a fresh hose still weeps. A small assortment kit costs very little and guarantees you have the right size on the bench when you need it.

How This Machine Delivers Fuel

The Brute Force 300 uses a carburetor, so the system is about as simple as fuel delivery gets. A petcock at the tank shuts flow off at the source, and gravity does the rest, feeding the carburetor inlet through a single hose. There is nothing under pressure anywhere, meaning no pump to bleed, no relay or fuse to pull first, and no pressurized quick-connect coupler standing in your way. Both ends are barbed spigots with clamps.

Take advantage of the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor. Slip clear tubing over it, run it into a container, and open the screw to empty the bowl before you disconnect anything. Since this is a 2x4, no front differential or added driveline hardware crowds the frame, so the hose route is short and unobstructed — considerably better access than the same repair on a four-wheel-drive utility model.

What Ages a Fuel Hose

Rubber depends on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those compounds slowly leave the material over the years. Heat from the air-cooled 271cc single accelerates the loss, particularly on the length of hose nearest the engine, and a stiffened hose cracks at the bends and beneath the clamps as the chassis vibrates. Machines that live in dry, arid country tend to reach that point sooner, since low humidity pulls moisture from the hose wall and leaves the exterior hard and chalky.

The inner liner has its own enemy in ethanol-blended pump gas. Alcohol content holds moisture against the rubber and gradually degrades the inner surface, releasing fine debris toward the carburetor. Fuel left standing does far more damage than fuel in motion, so a Brute Force 300 that sits for a season with a partial tank frequently needs hose sooner than one used every weekend.

Symptoms Worth Acting On

  • Fuel staining or a slow drip under the left side of the quad after it has been parked
  • A gasoline smell around the front bodywork that never fully clears
  • Hairline cracking that opens when you flex the hose, or a hard, glassy texture
  • A soft, swollen length of hose, which signals breakdown from the inside
  • A caked ring of dust at either fitting where fuel has seeped and evaporated repeatedly
  • Bogging under acceleration, a lean stumble, or the engine acting out of fuel with plenty in the tank

Prep, Ventilation, and Tools

Beyond the hose and clamps, keep gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a shallow catch pan, clear tubing for the bowl drain, a flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a small socket set, and clean rags within reach. Nothing exotic is required.

The safety piece is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and pools at floor level where a water heater pilot light or a shop heater can ignite it, and an open window six feet up does nothing about that. Do this work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, keep an extinguisher within reach, and keep grinding, welding, and open flame out of the area. Let spilled fuel evaporate in open air rather than sealing fuel-soaked rags in a closed container.

Out With the Old, In With the New

Shut the petcock, remove the seat, and take off any panel blocking your view of the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Drain the float bowl into your container and close the screw. Slide the pan underneath, lay a rag over the first fitting you open, and remember that the hose holds fuel even with the valve closed.

Loosen both clamps and slide them well up the hose. Twist the old hose on its barb to break the varnish bond instead of pulling it straight off, which protects the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet from unnecessary strain. If it has bonded solidly, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in halves. Note the original path and any frame clip before it is fully out.

Cut the new hose to match the old length, then push each end all the way onto its barb until it seats. Install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone create a leak path on a fuel fitting and let the hose walk off the barb over time, so keep every lubricant away from the sealing surface. A stubborn end goes on easily after a brief dip in hot water. Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushing.

Confirming It Is Dry

Open the petcock and give the line a minute to fill and the float bowl to refill. Wipe both joints, then study them under strong light for any bead of fuel. Start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect a second time while everything is warm, since heat and vibration expose a marginal connection that looked fine cold. Once both ends stay bone dry, reinstall the bodywork and seat and your 2020 Brute Force 300 is ready for work.
