Your 2020 Rancher 420 is fuel injected, and an electric pump inside the tank keeps the supply hose under pressure even hours after the engine stops. There is no petcock anywhere on the machine to shut off flow, so the job opens with a deliberate pressure relief sequence and follows from there. Once you understand that difference, everything else on this quad is well within reach of an intermediate home mechanic.
Dropping System Pressure Safely
Locate and remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine for a few seconds. It will fire, starve, and stall, which is exactly the point: that stall means the line has given up most of its pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can spark near fuel vapor. The hose still contains liquid gasoline at this stage, so position a drain pan before separating a fitting. Because there is no valve to close, keep line clamping pliers nearby for pinching off any low pressure or return section you need to isolate.
Tools and Materials Worth Having on Hand
Stage all of it before you start:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved gasoline container and a wide drain pan
- New hose rated for fuel injection pressure and sized to the original inside diameter
- Clamps matched to your fittings, plus a quick connect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
- Line clamping pliers, a razor knife, and a good supply of rags
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and body panels
On the safety side, treat gasoline vapor as something that flows rather than rises. It is heavier than air and settles along the floor, so an open door or working outdoors matters far more than a window above the bench. Put out pilot lights, keep torches and grinders away, use a sealed LED work light, and set an extinguisher within reach before the first fitting opens.
Why a Perfectly Good Hose Eventually Is Not
Fuel line rubber holds its flexibility thanks to plasticizers, and every heat cycle from the engine drives a little more of that out. The hose stiffens until it behaves like hard tubing, and once it cannot flex with the chassis, vibration begins working splits into it. Those splits form where the rubber stretches over a barb and sits under clamp pressure, which is the one area a clamp keeps you from seeing.
Two external factors accelerate the timeline. Dry climates continually draw moisture out of the hose wall, hardening it years earlier than the same part in humid country. Ethanol blended gasoline attacks from within, absorbing moisture during periods of disuse and degrading the inner liner into gum and loose debris. Since an injected Rancher pushes everything through fine passages downstream, internal breakdown of the hose carries more risk here than on an older carbureted quad.
Signs You Should Be Watching For
Inspect the line whenever any of these appear:
- Fuel wetness beneath the machine or a fresh stain where it normally parks
- A gasoline smell strongest right after shutdown, while the system still holds pressure
- Cracking, a chalky surface, or a hardened stretch you can feel by squeezing the hose
- Bogging under load, hesitation at higher rpm, or the engine acting as though fuel is running short
- Caked dirt forming a ring at either fitting, the dried record of a slow weep
A pressurized leak often skips the puddle stage entirely, atomizing and evaporating instead. Trust the smell even when the concrete stays dry.
Working the Old Line Free
Remove the seat and the panels covering the tank and the hose run toward the throttle body. Set the pan underneath and drape a rag over the first joint you open to catch residual fuel. Slide any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. For a quick connect, depress both locking tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off, resisting any urge to lever it sideways, since aged plastic cracks readily under that load.
Twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond before pulling. When a hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off rather than stressing the fitting. Take note of the routing and every clip as the line comes out. This being a 4x4 model, the hose travels past front differential hardware and threads through additional frame clearance points that a two wheel drive Rancher does not have, and reproducing that path exactly is what keeps the new line clear of heat and rotating components.
Fitting the Replacement and Testing Your Work
Cut the new hose to the same length as the original, then push each end fully onto its fitting until it seats against the shoulder. Assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, because a lubricated sealing surface lets pressurized fuel creep past the clamp and can wash contamination into the injection system. If a hose end is stubborn, soften it briefly in hot water. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. Self locking quick connects require no clamp whatsoever, only a firm push until the collar clicks and a solid tug to confirm engagement. Reseat the hose in its factory clips, verifying clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline.
Finish with a real leak check. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine, letting the pump pressurize the circuit each time while you watch both joints stay dry. Then start it, wipe the fittings with a clean rag, and observe them at idle for several minutes before the plastics go back on. Keep in mind that this Rancher's fuel filter is housed inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the visible hose, so persistent delivery problems after a clean install point to that assembly instead of your new line.
