Of all the maintenance you can do on a 2020 Rancher 420 2x4, replacing a suspect fuel line offers one of the best returns for the effort. The part is inexpensive, the work takes an hour of unhurried attention, and the failure it prevents is the kind that ends a day early. This is a fuel-injected Rancher, so the procedure revolves around pressure rather than a petcock.
Why the Hose Wears Out
Fuel hose is a rubber component in a hostile spot. Heat radiating from the cylinder slowly drives the plasticizers out of the compound, and once those are gone the hose stiffens. A stiff hose cannot flex with the frame, so vibration turns it into cracks, geneRally right at a bend or under the squeeze of a clamp.
Climate and fuel finish the job. Dry, low-humidity air continually pulls moisture from the hose wall, hardening lines years earlier than the same part would harden in wet country. And ethanol-blended pump gas left standing during any stretch of inactivity absorbs water and degrades the inner liner, leaving softened material and gum that can restrict flow or drift toward the injector. Because that internal breakdown is invisible, a hose that looks fine may already be finished.
Confirming the Fuel System on This Model
This Rancher runs programmed fuel injection, which means an electric pump inside the tank feeds a pressurized hose to the throttle body. There is no fuel valve to close and no float bowl to drain. The line remains pressurized after shutdown, one or both fittings may be a self-locking quick-connect rather than a clamped barb, and the fuel filter is integrated with the in-tank pump module instead of sitting inline. Line-clamping pliers do the job a petcock would otherwise handle. The 2x4 driveline also means no front differential in the way, keeping the hose path straightforward.
Symptoms Pointing at the Supply Line
- A fuel odor near the tank and seat that lingers after the engine is shut off
- A puddle or wet streak beneath the frame after the machine has sat overnight
- Hairline cracks, glazing, or a chalky surface anywhere on the hose
- A hard, unyielding section that will not compress when pinched
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or hard starting that comes and goes
On a pressurized system a small leak often mists and evaporates rather than dripping, so the absence of a puddle does not clear the hose. Smell is the more sensitive test.
Setting Up: Parts, Tools, and Fume Control
Lay out gloves and eye protection, a sealed gasoline-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter with an injection-appropriate pressure rating, new clamps, a quick-disconnect release tool if you find locking couplers, line-clamping pliers, a razor blade, a small flat-blade screwdriver, sockets for the seat and covers, and a generous stack of rags.
Then get the ventilation right, because it is the real hazard in this job. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air; it drops to the floor and spreads along it toward water heater pilots, portable heaters, and electrical connections sitting at that height. Work outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door, shut down every flame source in the building, keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the container the moment it holds fuel, and carry soaked rags outside rather than piling them by the bench.
Removing the Original Hose
Start with the pump. Pull its fuse, crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls and will not restart, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the panels covering the tank, follow the hose from the pump flange to the throttle body, and photograph every clip and guide before disturbing anything.
Slide the pan under the joint you plan to open, hold a rag against it, and accept that some fuel will still run out. Retract clamps well back along the hose before you twist anything. Locking couplers separate only when both tabs are pressed evenly and the connector is pulled straight off; angled prying cracks collars that have weathered several seasons. If varnish has cemented the hose to a barb, cut it lengthwise with a fresh blade and peel it away instead of applying enough force to distort the fitting.
Fitting the New Line and Testing It
Cut the replacement to match the original length so it neither chafes on the frame nor tugs at its ends as the engine moves. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out, and install it dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone anywhere near a sealing surface, because lubricant is precisely what lets pressurized fuel creep past a clamp. Hot water is the only help a stubborn hose end should get. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, and leave any self-locking quick-connect unclamped, pushing until it clicks and confirming with a pull. Route the hose back through its original clips, away from exhaust heat.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times to pressurize the line without starting the engine. Inspect both connections with a light and a dry rag, then run the engine at idle for a few minutes and check again with the throttle blipped. Reassemble the bodywork after everything has stayed dry, and take a short shakedown ride close to home before the Rancher goes back to work.
