A fuel hose is the cheapest part on a Rancher and one of the few that can end a ride outright. Replacing it is well within reach of anyone comfortable pulling the seat and a couple of fender bolts, provided you understand how this particular machine delivers fuel before you start loosening things.

Confirming What Feeds the Engine

The 2020 Rancher 420 2x4 ES runs Honda's programmed fuel injection, not a carburetor. Practically speaking, that means three things for this job. There is no petcock lever to rotate to the off position. The supply hose stays pressurized after shutdown because an electric pump lives inside the tank. And there is no float bowl to drain, so all the fuel you need to capture sits in the tank and the line itself. Being a 2WD model, this Rancher also gives you a clearer path along the frame than a 4x4 version, where the front differential and its driveshaft occupy space near the routing.

How Age, Heat, and Ethanol Wear a Hose Out

Rubber fuel line ages from both directions at once. On the outside, engine heat cycles and years of sun exposure cook the flexibility out of the compound until the hose feels like hard plastic. Bend a section like that and you create a crack instead of a curve. Owners in arid climates see this happen years earlier than riders in humid regions, simply because dry air keeps pulling moisture out of the hose wall.

Meanwhile ethanol-blended fuel works on the inner liner. When a machine sits between seasons with gas in the system, the alcohol draws in moisture and slowly breaks down the liner, leaving behind gum and loose material that heads straight for the injector. Neither process announces itself, which is why hose age deserves attention on any Rancher that has racked up a few seasons.

Catching a Failing Line Before It Strands You

Check for these during your regular once-over:

  • Fuel odor around the seat and tank area, strongest right after you shut the engine down
  • A wet spot or small puddle under the machine following a night in the shed
  • Surface cracking, a chalky white haze, or a hardened spot that will not compress under your thumb
  • Weeping or staining right at a clamp, where the hose has been squeezed the longest
  • Bogging, a lean-feeling stumble at higher rpm, or hard starting that comes and goes

Parts and Tools Worth Laying Out First

Have everything within arm's reach so you are never holding an open fuel line while hunting for a screwdriver. You will want gloves, a gasoline-rated container and drain pan, a stack of rags, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter and rated for injection pressure, new clamps, line-clamping pliers to pinch off the hose in place of a petcock, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a basic socket set.

The safety piece is genuine and worth spelling out. Gasoline vapor pools low and travels, so ventilation at floor level is what counts. Roll the Rancher outside or open the garage door fully, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and shut off any pilot light or space heater in the building before you break a fuel connection.

Getting the Original Hose Off the Machine

Relieve pressure first. Remove the fuel pump fuse, crank the starter until the engine dies, then switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Take off the seat and the panels covering the tank, then follow the hose from the pump flange back to the throttle body so you know every clip and guide it passes through. Photograph the routing while it is still intact.

Slip your drain pan under the lower fitting and hold a rag against it as you work. Retract each clamp along the hose before disturbing the joint. On fittings that use a self-locking coupler, squeeze the tabs evenly and draw the connector straight off; prying at an angle is how aged plastic collars break. Where the hose has bonded itself to a metal barb, cut it lengthwise with a fresh blade and peel it away rather than twisting hard enough to damage the fitting you are about to reuse.

Installing the New Line Dry and Clamping It Right

Match the replacement to the original length before you fit anything. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and do it dry. Lubricant of any kind on a fitting creates a slick path for pressurized fuel to escape, so no grease, no oil, no silicone spray. Warm water is the only assist you need if a hose end feels tight.

Locate new clamps behind the bead at each end and tighten them until they hold firmly without biting a groove into the rubber. Quick-connect style fittings, where your Rancher uses them, lock themselves and want no clamp; listen for the click and confirm the latch with a solid tug. Reinstall the hose into every clip you photographed so it cannot rub the frame or rest against the exhaust.

The Final Leak Check

Put the fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and turn the key on and off several times to let the pump build pressure without starting the engine. Study both connections with a bright light and a dry rag in hand. Once they stay clean, fire the engine and let it idle a few minutes, checking again as heat and vibration come into play. Only then should the plastics and seat go back on.

Keep in mind that the filter on this injected Rancher is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline unit you can swap on the visible hose. If a fresh line does not resolve a delivery complaint, that module is your next stop.
