Before a wrench touches anything, settle one question: what kind of fuel system does this quad have? The answer dictates the entire approach, and getting it wrong is how people end up with gasoline across the garage floor. The 2020 CFORCE 400 is fuel-injected, and everything below follows from that.

No Petcock, In-Tank Pump, Live Pressure

CFMOTO built the 400 with electronic fuel injection feeding its single-cylinder engine, so the familiar carbureted layout does not apply. There is no shutoff valve under the tank to rotate closed, no float bowl with a drain screw at the bottom, and no gravity feed keeping things gentle. Instead, an electric pump sits inside the tank and pushes fuel through a supply line to the throttle body, and that line stays pressurized after you shut the key off. Anyone who has swapped hose on an older carbureted quad will notice the difference immediately: rather than closing a valve and catching a dribble, you have to bleed the system down first and use line-clamping pliers where a petcock would otherwise do the isolating. The fuel filter is also part of the in-tank pump module here rather than hanging inline where you can spot it.

Why the Hose Will Not Last Forever

Fuel line degrades on two fronts. Heat cycling from the engine and exposure to sunlight steadily drive the plasticizers out of the rubber, and as those leave, hose that was once pliable becomes stiff and brittle. Dry climates compound it, because low humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens it faster; the same 2020 CFORCE 400 will show cracked line noticeably earlier in desert country than in a humid region. Once the material is rigid, normal chassis movement over rough ground converts fine surface checking into actual splits.

The inside of the hose faces ethanol. Blended pump fuel pulls in moisture and attacks the inner liner over time, and the damage accelerates when the quad sits for long stretches with gasoline standing in the line. The hose softens internally while it hardens externally, and the debris it releases heads for the injector. Because that inner deterioration is completely hidden, hose age is a better replacement trigger than hose appearance.

Clues That the Line Is on Its Way Out

The tells are usually subtle at first. A gasoline smell that hangs around the machine after shutdown, while residual pressure still pushes against a weak point, is one of the earliest. A faint stain or wet spot on the concrete under the tank is another. Run your fingers along the hose and squeeze: sound line compresses and rebounds, while tired line feels hard, sometimes with a chalky surface or a crunch as old rubber gives.

Then there is how the engine behaves. Restricted or leaking supply shows up as bogging under load, a hesitation when the throttle opens quickly, or a machine acting starved with a tank that is far from empty. Extended cranking on a cold start often means pressure has bled down overnight through a joint that no longer seals. Remember that on an injected 400, escaping fuel can atomize and vanish before it drips, so a smell without a puddle is still a real finding.

Setting Up: Parts, Tools, and Ventilation

  • Injection-rated replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, bought a little long so you can trim to fit
  • Matching new clamps, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, which do the job the missing petcock would have done
  • Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a generous stack of rags
  • An approved sealed fuel container and a wide drain pan
  • Razor knife, small flat-blade screwdriver, and sockets for the seat and side panels

Take the safety piece seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles across the floor precisely where you are kneeling, and a window opened at head height does almost nothing about it. Work outdoors or with the door wide open, shut down heaters and battery chargers, keep sparking tools out of the area, and carry fuel-soaked rags outside rather than stacking them nearby.

Working the Old Line Free

Relieve pressure first: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls, then key off and disconnect the negative battery lead. Remove the seat and whatever plastics block the tank outlet, and trace the hose forward to the throttle body so you understand its full path before disturbing it.

Set the drain pan underneath and lay a rag over the fitting you open first, because standing fuel remains in the line even after depressurizing. Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back before twisting anything. For a quick-connect, press the release tabs squarely and pull straight off without levering, since aged plastic collars crack under side load. If varnish has cemented the hose to a barb, twist gently to break the bond, and if that fails, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of prying at the fitting.

Pay attention to routing on the way out. The 400 is a 4x4 with selectable two-wheel drive, and the front differential and driveline hardware create clearance points that a two-wheel-drive quad would not have. Photograph each clip and guide so reassembly is not a guessing game.

Installation and the Final Leak Check

Trim the new hose to the original length. Extra slack sags into frame tubes or drifts toward hot exhaust and chafes through eventually. Seat each end fully onto its barb, dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting create a film that lets pressurized fuel creep out past the hose, so keep lubricant off entirely. A brief soak of the hose end in hot water makes a stubborn one slide on by hand.

Set new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly without crushing the hose. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until it clicks and tug to confirm the latch engaged; no clamp is wanted at that joint. Return the hose to every factory guide before reinstalling plastics.

Put the fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit and gives you a clean, dry look at both connections. Wipe them, then start the engine and inspect once more at idle and under a few throttle blips. If the CFORCE 400 still stumbles after a genuinely leak-free installation, remember the filter lives inside the tank with the pump and is the next component to evaluate.
