The machine runs Can-Am's fuel-injected 976cc Rotax V-twin with an electric pump inside the tank, meaning the supply line is pressurized and needs hose rated accordingly. There is also no petcock on this model, so the low-pressure tricks that work on a carbureted quad simply do not apply.

Where Fuel Hose Loses Its Flexibility
Two unrelated processes conspire against the same piece of rubber. Externally, the plasticizers that keep hose pliable gradually migrate out, and the heat this V-twin generates under the plastics speeds that loss considerably. The hose hardens, stops absorbing vibration, and begins cracking at the bends where stress concentrates. Machines kept in dry, low-humidity regions harden faster, because arid air draws residual moisture out of the hose wall.
Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline is responsible. Alcohol in the fuel absorbs water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, softening it and leaving gum in its place. An X MR that sits between rides with fuel in the system provides exactly the still conditions that reaction favors. Because both mechanisms do their early work out of sight, replacing a hose on age alone is a reasonable decision even when the exterior still looks acceptable.
Recognizing a Line About to Let Go
Inspect for the following, ideally after washing and drying the machine so the evidence is readable:
- Fuel collecting on the skid plate or a damp patch on clean concrete after the quad has sat
- A gasoline odor around the tank that persists, sharpest right after key-off while the system still holds pressure
- Cracking across a bend, a chalky gray cast, or a section that feels hard and no longer springs back
- The V-twin bogging under load, running lean at higher rpm, or acting like the tank is nearly empty
- Dirt caked in a ring at a fitting, plus clamp screws that are rusted or seized
On a pressurized circuit, a pinhole leak often atomizes and evaporates before it drips, so a persistent smell without a puddle is genuine evidence rather than a false alarm.
Taking the System Off Pressure
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a second or two until it stalls from lack of supply, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. That short routine removes the pressure and guarantees the pump cannot run while your hands are on the plumbing. Residual fuel still sits in the hose, so slide the drain pan underneath and lay a rag across the first fitting you plan to open.
Old Hose Removal on a Mud Machine
With the seat and side panels off, follow the run from the tank outlet forward to the throttle body and catalogue every clip. The X MR uses a selectable four-wheel-drive chassis, so the line threads past front differential hardware and additional frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive quad does not have, and there are typically a couple more retaining points to release.
Slide each clamp well back before applying force to a barb. Corroded worm-gear screws respond to penetrating oil and patience, and if one still will not turn, cut the clamp off instead of rounding the head and fighting it. Spring clips open with pliers. A quick-connect coupler releases when you depress its tabs squarely and pull straight back, never at an angle, because those plastic collars turn brittle with age. Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist, and if a hose end has bonded itself solid, slice it lengthwise and peel it off. Photograph the routing before the old hose leaves the chassis, and clean packed mud out of the surrounding frame while you have the access.
New Hose Installation
Cut the replacement to the exact length of the original. Extra hose leans into frame tubes or front drive components, and on a machine operating in slurry that contact becomes a grinding action that will eventually open the line. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting; a lubricated sealing surface is exactly how pressurized fuel creeps past a clamp. Warm a stubborn hose end in hot water for a few seconds and it will slide on unaided.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the fresh rubber. Where a self-locking quick-connect is fitted, push until the collar clicks and then pull to verify the latch has engaged, adding no clamp to that joint. Refit the hose into all of its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and moving front-drive hardware.
Final Inspection and Test Ride
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you check both joints while the area is still dry and easy to read. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and watch for a bead forming. Then start the engine and inspect once more at idle, tracing the whole run with a light while heat and vibration are present. After several minutes of leak-free running, take a slow lap of the yard and check the joints again before the bodywork goes back on.
Keep the filter location in mind going forward: on this injected X MR it sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline on the hose you just replaced. A new line addresses hose failures only, so if the machine still runs starved after a clean installation, the in-tank module is the logical next stop.
