No petcock sits under the tank on this platform, and the hose you are inspecting carries pressurized fuel from an in-tank pump. Understanding that changes the order of operations before you loosen anything.
Signals That the Hose Is Going
Failing fuel hose rarely blows out without warning. Run through this list whenever something feels off:
- A gasoline odor hanging around the machine, sharpest in the minutes right after you shut it down
- A wet ring or small pool on the skid plate or garage floor under the tank area
- Fine cracks, a dull chalky surface, or a section that has gone rigid when you squeeze it
- The engine bogging when you load the 6x6 down, hesitating off idle, or behaving as though the tank is nearly empty
- A crust of dried grit at a fitting, which is what a slow seep leaves behind on a dusty machine
Because this is an injected platform, a pressure-side leak often vaporizes before it can form a puddle. Scent is a more reliable early detector than a visual check on the floor, and a machine that smells like fuel after every ride deserves a real inspection.
Understanding What Kills Fuel Hose
Two separate processes work on the same piece of rubber. From the outside, the hose loses the plasticizers that make it flexible, and a wall that once yielded under your thumb goes hard and brittle. Heat from the big twin plus constant frame flex across a six-wheel chassis turns that brittleness into surface fissures. In dry, low-humidity regions the outer wall dries and hardens noticeably faster.
From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel does its own damage. Sitting E10 pulls in moisture and slowly breaks down the inner liner, which softens, swells, and releases fine material into the fuel stream. The result is a hose that appears fine externally while quietly delivering debris toward the injectors. Any 6x6 that spends weeks parked between hauling jobs is a candidate for exactly this.
Prepping the Work Area and the Parts Pile
Set out everything you need before you break the first joint:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A sealed, approved container to catch drained fuel
- Injection-rated replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps to suit the fittings you find, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank side uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers to pinch off flow, because there is no fuel valve on this model to do it for you
- Hand tools for the seat, rear cargo box, and side panels
- Plenty of rags and a drain pan
Work outside or with the door wide open, and remember that gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects near the floor. Ventilation at ground level matters far more than an open window overhead. Kill every ignition source in the space, including anything with a standing pilot light, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach.
Freeing the Old Line
Depressurize the system first. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it dies, turn the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Position a pan and cover the first fitting with a rag; even with pressure released, standing fuel will find its way out.
Slide worm-gear or spring clamps back along the hose before you twist anything. Quick-connect fittings want the locking tabs pressed evenly and the coupler drawn straight off — levering to the side cracks aged collars. Break the varnish bond by rotating the hose on the barb rather than pulling hard, and slit a stubborn hose lengthwise with a blade instead of risking the fitting it grips.
Note the routing carefully. Six driven wheels mean more driveline hardware and extra frame structure than a standard 4x4, and the hose often follows a longer path with additional clearance points. Photograph every clip before the old hose is out.
Installing and Securing the Replacement
Match the new hose to the original length exactly. Extra length loops into the frame or rubs on the driveline, and on a chassis this long there is plenty of opportunity for a sloppy run to find something hot. Seat each end fully on its barb, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting, since any lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path to creep past. Warm the hose end in hot water if it fights you.
Place clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and snug them evenly. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank should click home, and a firm tug afterward confirms the latch engaged — leave that joint clamp-free. Reseat the hose in its factory clips so it stays away from exhaust heat and rotating parts.
Leak Check and Final Assembly
Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and loads the circuit, letting you inspect a dry system under pressure. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch for the faintest darkening, then fire the engine and check once more at idle before any panels go back on.
One last note for this platform: the inline filter you might expect to find on the visible hose actually lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. Fresh hose solves a leak, but a starved-running 6x6 with new plumbing points at that in-tank unit next.
