Working Safely Around Pressurized Gasoline

Begin by relieving fuel pressure. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block, crank the starter until the engine quits, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable so nothing can energize the pump or throw a spark while a line is open. Only then does the seat come off.

Ventilation deserves equal attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts down and pools along the floor where water heaters, space heaters, and cord connections tend to sit. Roll the Outlander outdoors if the weather allows. Working in a garage means the door fully open and a fan at floor height pushing air out, every flame and hot element shut down, and an extinguisher within reach. Wear nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline moves through skin easily and drags its additives with it.

Why the Old Hose Failed

Do not wait for a puddle to confirm your suspicion. Pressurized fuel escaping a hairline crack frequently atomizes and evaporates before a drop can form, so a fuel odor paired with an unhappy engine is enough evidence on an injected machine.

Parts and Tools Worth Having Ready

  • New clamps matched to the fitting style you find, plus a quick-connect release tool if your machine uses locking collars

Getting the Old Line Out of the Chassis
