The Mechanics of Rubber Going Bad
Fuel hose is flexible because of plasticizers blended into its wall. Those compounds migrate out slowly under heat and time, and the hose progresses from soft and springy to stiff, then brittle, then cracked. An X MR adds its own accelerants. A pressurized leak commonly atomizes before it can drip, and a muddy underside conceals stains well. Treat an unexplained fuel smell as a real symptom and inspect the whole run with the plastics off.
Assembling Parts, Tools, and Ventilation

Fitting New Hose and Testing Before You Ride
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original piece. Extra hose finds a frame edge or the steering arc to rub against, and a loose loop collects mud on a machine like this. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone must stay off fuel fittings entirely, because a lubricant film under the clamp gives pressurized fuel a route out. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a few seconds instead. Set fresh clamps immediately behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, and if the tank side uses a self-locking coupler, push until it clicks and pull firmly to confirm engagement. No clamp belongs on that fitting.
Route the hose back into every clip, refit the pump fuse, and Reconnect the battery. Cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line, then wipe both joints with a dry rag and watch for any dampness. Start the twin, let it idle several minutes, and inspect a final time before the bodywork goes back on.
