Before a wrench comes out, it pays to understand exactly what you are working on. The 2019 KingQuad 500AXi delivers fuel electronically, not through a carburetor, and every step of a hose replacement follows from that fact. Owners who assume otherwise spend twenty minutes hunting for a petcock that was never installed and then get surprised by a pressurized fitting.

How This Machine Moves Fuel

The AXi badge stands for Suzuki fuel injection. A pump mounted inside the fuel tank pressurizes the supply hose, which carries fuel to a single throttle body where the injector meters it. There is no manual fuel valve to shut off flow, no float bowl with a drain screw at the bottom, and no gravity feed you can interrupt by lifting a hose. The circuit also holds residual pressure after the engine stops, sometimes for hours. That means the correct first move is bleeding pressure electrically, and it means the replacement hose must be rated for injection service rather than the soft carburetor hose that suits older quads.

Why the Hose Ages Out

Fuel hose fails on a timeline, not a mileage count. The softeners that keep the rubber pliable leave the wall gradually as the engine heat–cycles the hose thousands of times, so a line that was flexible when new becomes stiff, then glassy, then cracked at the sharpest bend. Arid climates hurry this along, because dry air continuously draws moisture out of the hose.

Ethanol–blended fuel works the other side. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and slowly attacks the liner, and gasoline that sits for a season leaves gum and varnish at the fittings while softening the rubber it touches. On a 2019 machine both processes have had years to run, which is why hose condition should be judged by age and feel rather than a quick visual pass.

Signs Your Line Needs Attention

  • A puddle of fuel or a recurring damp patch under the tank after the quad has been parked
  • A gasoline smell that hangs around the machine, often the first symptom on a pressurized system
  • Cracking or a chalky bloom on the hose surface, especially inside curves
  • Hose that has gone hard and will not compress when pinched
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or the general feel of an engine running out of fuel

Keep in mind that pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole may mist and evaporate rather than dripping, so smell alone justifies a closer look.

Preparation and Handling Gasoline Safely

Lay out gloves, eye protection, injection–rated hose in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps in the matching style, a quick–disconnect release tool if your fitting uses a locking collar, line–clamping pliers, an approved fuel container, a catch pan, rags, sockets, and a plastic trim tool.

The safety part is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects along the floor rather than escaping through a window above your head. Work outdoors, or with the overhead door fully open so air moves at ground level. Remove space heaters, floor–mounted work lights, and anything with a standing pilot from the area before you open a fitting, and keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach.

Removing the Original Line

Drop the pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine stalls on its own, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and side plastics to expose the tank connection, then follow the hose to the throttle body. Slide the catch pan under the area and cover each joint with a rag as you open it, since fuel stays in the hose after pressure is gone.

Move the clamps back along the hose before working on the fittings. A locking connector releases when both tabs are pressed squarely and the body is pulled straight off, and prying sideways is how those collars crack. Hose bonded to a barb by varnish usually breaks free with a gentle twist; when it does not, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away instead of pulling harder. Pay attention to the routing on the way out, because this selectable 4x4 threads the line past front differential hardware and additional frame clearance points that must be reproduced.

Putting the New Hose On

Cut the new hose to the original length, no longer and no shorter. Extra material chafes against the frame; a short piece tugs at the fittings as the chassis flexes. Seat each end fully onto its barb, installing it completely dry. Any lubricant on a fuel fitting gives pressurized fuel a channel to escape past the clamp, so grease and silicone stay in the toolbox. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn end better than force ever will.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without biting into the rubber. If your KingQuad uses a self–locking coupler, push until it clicks and confirm with a solid tug rather than adding a clamp. Reseat the hose in its original clips so it keeps clear of the driveline and hot exhaust.

Leak Check and Final Steps

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while everything sits still, which is the easiest condition in which to spot a bead of fuel. Wipe both joints with a clean rag, start the engine, and inspect again at idle and after a few minutes of warm running before the bodywork returns.

Worth remembering: on the injected 500AXi the fuel filter is part of the in–tank pump assembly rather than an inline component on the hose you just replaced. Fresh hose ends a leak, but a restricted filter inside the tank generates the same starvation symptoms and is where to look next if the engine still feels flat.
