Every part of this job is manageable except the part people take least seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It does not rise and vent out a cracked window; it sinks, spreads across the floor, and travels toward whatever ignition source is sitting down at that level. Before you touch the 2019 Polaris Sportsman 570 SP, move the work outside or open the shop door all the way, shut off space heaters, get hot work lamps off the concrete, and stay well clear of any appliance with a standing pilot flame. Wear gloves start to finish, because gasoline strips the natural oils out of your skin in minutes.

Knowing What You Are Opening

The 2019 Sportsman 570 SP is powered by the ProStar 567cc single with electronic fuel injection. That means no petcock beneath the tank, nothing to rotate to off, and no gravity feed you can simply interrupt. A pump inside the tank pressurizes the supply hose, and that pressure is still present after the key is out. So the job opens with deliberate pressure relief, and line-clamping pliers become a required tool because they do the work the missing shutoff valve would otherwise do. Fitting hardware differs from carbureted practice as well, with a conventional clamp usually at the throttle body and possibly a self-locking quick-connect coupler at the pump flange that needs no clamp whatsoever.

The Slow Death of a Fuel Hose

Nothing sudden happens to fuel line. From the outside, heat cycling from the engine plus years of exposure gradually drive the plasticizers out of the rubber, leaving a wall that is stiff instead of supple. Once it stops flexing, the vibration a big single feeds into the frame opens fine cracks at bends and barbs. Dry, low-humidity climates make it worse, since arid air pulls moisture out of the hose and hardens it from the surface inward. From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas attracts atmospheric water and slowly attacks the liner, leaving gum and softening the material, with the process running fastest whenever fuel sits unused in the line. The result is a hose that may look serviceable while having lost the resilience it needs to seal on a barb.

What to Watch For

  • A fuel smell around the seat and tank that peaks in the minutes right after shutdown
  • A damp patch or small puddle under the mid-chassis after an overnight sit
  • Surface crazing, a chalky gray bloom, or a stretch of hose that feels rigid to the pinch
  • Bogging under load, stumbling off idle, or an engine acting starved with plenty of fuel aboard
  • Dirt caked into a ring at a fitting, the mark of fuel that has seeped and dried again and again

On this machine a pressure-side leak can atomize into a mist that never reaches the ground, so a persistent smell with no visible stain still deserves a hose replacement rather than a shrug.

What You Need Before Starting

Set out nitrile gloves and eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed fuel-rated container, replacement hose in the correct inside diameter rated for injection pressure, fresh clamps in the existing style, a quick-disconnect release tool, line-clamping pliers, a socket set, a small flat blade, a razor knife, and a generous supply of clean rags. Having it all within reach is not fussiness. Once a fitting is open you want both hands free and no reason to leave the machine.

Removing the Old Hose

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for several seconds until it stalls or will not fire, switch the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the side panels covering the tank and the hose run heading forward to the throttle body. Slide the drain pan into position and drape a rag over the first joint you plan to separate, because a depressurized hose is still full of fuel.

Slide any existing clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the connection. A locking quick-connect releases when its tabs are pressed squarely and the coupler is pulled straight off the port — prying to one side is how weathered plastic collars break. On barbed fittings, break the varnish bond with a gentle twist rather than a hard pull. When a hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of forcing it and damaging the barb.

Track the routing as the line comes free. This 4x4 chassis sends the hose past front differential hardware and through frame clearance points a two-wheel-drive machine would not have, secured in clips that keep it clear of heat and moving parts. Photograph the path before the old hose is fully out.

Installation, Verification, and Cleanup

Cut the new hose to the exact length you removed. Slack is not helpful; it gives the hose room to chafe against the frame or drift toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and install it dry. Do not put grease, oil, or silicone spray on any fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing face is precisely how pressurized fuel creeps past a clamp that feels perfectly tight. Soften a stubborn end in hot water for half a minute if you need help.

Install new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly rather than crushing one side. A self-locking quick-connect clicks when it seats; verify with a firm pull and add no clamp. Return the hose to every original retainer so it holds position away from the driveline and heat.

Reinstall the fuse or relay, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off five or six times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect both joints while the surrounding area is dry. Wipe each with a clean rag and look for the faintest transfer. Then start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and check again with the system at full running pressure. Only after that should the panels and seat go back on, and only then should you clean up the drained fuel and rags responsibly.

Keep one detail in mind about this platform: the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline unit on the hose. Fresh line resolves a cracked or leaking line. If the 570 SP still bogs or starves afterward, the assembly inside the tank is the next place to look.
