Few jobs on a utility quad pay off as quickly as a fresh fuel hose. On the 2019 TRX250 Recon you are dealing with one of the simplest fuel systems Honda still builds, and that simplicity is entirely in your favor when a hardened line finally starts weeping onto the frame.
What You Are Actually Working With
The 2019 Recon runs a 229cc air-cooled single fed by a carburetor, not electronic injection. That means there is no fuel pump, no pressurized rail, and no electrical relay to disable before you start. Fuel moves from the tank to the carburetor by gravity alone, through a short rubber hose secured at each end with a clamp. Between the tank outlet and that hose sits a petcock, a manual fuel valve with ON, OFF, and reserve positions, and that valve is the single most useful thing on the machine when you want to interrupt flow.
The Recon is a 2WD quad with a solid rear axle and no front differential, so the fuel hose takes a direct, uncluttered path down the left side of the engine. There is no front driveline housing to detour around and no extra crossmember eating up clearance. You can typically see the entire run of hose from tank outlet to carburetor inlet once the seat and the left side panel are off.
Why Rubber Stops Being Rubber
Fuel hose fails from the inside and the outside at the same time. On the exterior, years of heat cycling off the cylinder head and constant ultraviolet exposure drive the plasticizers out of the compound. The hose loses its springy feel, goes stiff and slightly glassy, and then develops hairline checking wherever it bends. Riders in dry, low-humidity country watch this happen faster than anyone, because arid air pulls moisture out of the hose wall and accelerates the hardening.
Inside, ethanol-blended pump gasoline does its own work. E10 attracts and holds water, and the resulting mixture slowly softens and swells the inner liner while the outer wall keeps getting brittle. When a Recon sits between hunting seasons with old fuel standing in the line, that degradation runs unattended, and the varnish it leaves behind can shed downstream into the carburetor. A hose that looks fine can still be past its service life on a machine that has seen several seasons of storage.
Symptoms That Should Send You Under the Fender
A failing line rarely bursts without warning. Watch for the following:
- A gasoline smell hanging around the machine hours after you shut it off
- A small wet ring or puddle on the floor beneath the left side of the engine
- Fine cracking, chalky texture, or a hard spot you can feel by pinching the hose near either fitting
- Dust-caked residue at a clamp, which is dried fuel that has been seeping and evaporating
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble on hills, or an engine that behaves as if the tank were nearly empty when it is not
That last symptom matters on a gravity-feed machine. A collapsing, internally swollen hose restricts flow without leaking a drop, and the Recon will simply starve at sustained throttle while idling perfectly in the driveway.
Tools, Parts, and a Real Word About Gasoline
Set everything out before the first fitting comes loose:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils fast
- Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for gasoline
- New clamps — either factory-style spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
- A sealed metal or approved fuel container plus a drain pan
- Line-clamping pliers as a backup if the petcock seeps past its OFF position
- A flat-blade screwdriver, a basic socket set, a razor knife, and clean rags
Do this work outdoors or with the garage fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so an open door at ground height does more for you than a cracked window overhead. Keep heaters, grinders, chargers, and cigarettes completely out of the space, and never work on a hot engine.
Getting the Old Hose Off Cleanly
Turn the petcock to OFF and give it a moment. Remove the seat and the left side panel to expose the tank outlet, the valve, and the hose run. Slide your drain pan underneath, then loosen the float bowl drain screw on the carburetor and let the bowl empty through its drain tube into the pan. Emptying the bowl first means far less fuel escapes when you pull the hose.
Push each clamp back along the hose before you disturb the fitting. Twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it straight off, and if a hardened end refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away. That protects the fragile petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet, both of which are far more expensive than the hose. Note the clips and guides the old line passed through before it is fully free.
Fitting the Replacement and Proving It Dry
Cut the new hose to the length of the original. Extra length lets it sag into the exhaust or chafe on the frame, and a short piece puts a strain on both barbs. Push each end on dry until it seats fully against the shoulder of the fitting. Use no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere on the sealing surfaces — lubricant gives fuel a path to creep out and lets a hose walk off its barb over time. If the hose is stubborn, thirty seconds in hot water softens it enough to slide on unaided.
Position each new clamp just behind the raised bead, snug it evenly, and return the hose to its original routing clips. Close the float bowl drain screw, then turn the petcock to ON and watch both connections for a full minute while the bowl refills. Wipe everything with a clean rag, start the Recon, let it idle, and check again with the engine running and the machine leaned slightly. Only after a genuinely dry inspection should the side panel and seat go back on.
