How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2019 Can-Am Renegade 850 X XC

There is one detail about the 2019 Renegade 850 X XC that governs this entire repair, and it is worth stating before anything else: this machine is fuel injected, and the fuel line stays pressurized after the engine shuts off. Everything that follows — the tools you gather, the order of operations, the way you check your work — grows out of that fact.

Pressurized Fuel, No Petcock

The Rotax 850 V-twin in this Renegade receives fuel from an electric pump module mounted inside the tank. Nothing gravity feeds, so there is no valve under the tank to rotate closed the way an older carbureted quad would have. Pressure lingers in the line after shutdown, sometimes for a long while, which means the first physical action of the job is bleeding that pressure rather than loosening a clamp. The fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module, so the hose in front of you contains no serviceable filter element.

The X XC runs 4x4, and its hose path passes front differential mounting hardware and additional frame crossmembers. That does not change any step, but expect slightly longer routing with more retaining clips than a two-wheel-drive machine would use.

What Wears the Hose Out

Fuel hose ages on two fronts at once. Thermal cycling from the engine steadily drives plasticizers out of the rubber, and the hose stiffens until it cannot flex with the chassis. Once that flexibility is gone, vibration works fine surface checking into cracks that eventually seep at the fittings. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the whole process by drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the outer surface inward, season after season.

The inner liner faces a different attack. Ethanol-blended gasoline absorbs and holds water, and when a Renegade sits for months with E10 standing in the line, the alcohol breaks the liner down while the volatile components evaporate and leave gum in place. That combination produces a hose hardening outside and softening inside simultaneously, sometimes shedding fine debris toward the injectors well before it ever leaks visibly.

How a Failing Line Announces Itself

The obvious sign is fuel on the ground — a damp patch on the skid plate or a small puddle where the quad has been sitting. Just as reliable, and usually earlier, is smell. Gasoline odor that clings to a parked X XC, particularly in the minutes right after shutdown while the circuit still holds pressure, deserves immediate investigation.

Inspect the hose itself for a web of hairline cracks, a chalky whitened surface, or a ring of caked dirt at a fitting where seepage dried and trapped dust, and squeeze along its length feeling for rigid, glassy sections. Then consider engine behavior: bogging under load, hesitation when the throttle snaps open, or a general sense of fuel starvation at higher rpm all fit a compromised line. Keep in mind that pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a dry floor does not exonerate the hose.

Tools, Parts, and Gasoline Discipline

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline strips the oils from skin and absorbs through it
  • A sealed metal or fuel-rated plastic container, plus a drain pan
  • Replacement hose in the original inside diameter, rated for fuel-injection pressure rather than gravity-feed duty
  • Fresh clamps in the existing style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end is a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, which stand in for the petcock this model does not have
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and plastics, a small flat screwdriver, a razor blade, and plenty of rags

Work outside or with the garage door raised completely. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles along the floor rather than venting through a window at head height, and ventilation at ground level is what actually keeps you safe. Before opening a fitting, clear the area of shop heaters, appliance pilot lights, grinders, and hot work lamps.

Getting the Line Off

Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine until it stalls on the fuel remaining in the circuit. Shut the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Pull the seat and the side plastics needed to expose the tank outlet, and follow the hose rearward toward the throttle body.

Slide the drain pan under the joints and lay a rag over the first fitting you open, since standing fuel stays in the hose regardless of pressure. Back any clamp well down the hose before disturbing the connection. Release a quick-connect by pressing both tabs evenly and pulling the fitting straight off — angled prying is how collars crack. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, break the seal with a gentle twist, and if it will not surrender, slit the hose lengthwise and peel it away instead of forcing the fitting. Photograph the routing before the old hose leaves the frame.

Fitting the New Hose and Testing It

Trim the replacement to match the original length precisely. Excess length is not caution; it allows the hose to drape into the front driveline or chafe on a frame edge. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, dry. Nothing lubricated goes near a fuel fitting, since a film of grease or silicone on the sealing surface is the exact path pressurized gasoline uses to escape from under the hose. Dip a stiff end in hot water for a moment if it resists seating.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, firm without crushing the rubber. Where the tank connection is a self-locking quick-connect, push until the collar clicks and pull hard enough to confirm engagement; that fitting is designed to seal without a clamp. Return the hose to every factory clip so it stays clear of the exhaust and away from the differential.

Then verify. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while both fittings are still dry and easy to evaluate. Wipe the joints clean, start the 850, and inspect again at idle for several minutes before shutting down for a final check. If the machine still runs fuel starved with a fresh hose installed, turn to the in-tank pump and filter module next.
