Fuel Line Replacement Procedure for a 2019 Can-Am Renegade 1000R

There is no shutoff valve to flip on the 2019 Renegade 1000R, and that one absence dictates how the entire job unfolds. Can-Am feeds the 976cc Rotax V-twin in this sport quad through electronic fuel injection, drawing from an electric pump mounted inside the tank. The hose you are replacing therefore sits in a pressurized circuit, holding pressure after shutdown, with the filter tucked away inside the tank instead of hanging inline where you could reach it.
Sport Quad, Injected, No Petcock
If your experience is with carbureted machines, recalibrate before you start. On those, a petcock closes off gravity feed, a float bowl drain empties the residual fuel, and hose clamps at each end are the extent of the hardware. None of that exists here. Instead you have an electrically driven pump that must be taken out of the circuit, a line that may terminate in a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than a clamped barb, and a filter that is part of the pump module. The 1000R is also a selectable four-wheel-drive chassis, so the run has to clear front differential hardware and frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive machine would not carry.
The Two Enemies of Rubber Hose
Aging is the first. Plasticizers keep fuel hose flexible, and they gradually leave the rubber over years of service, faster when a big V-twin is cycling heat under the plastics. A hardened hose loses the ability to absorb vibration, so the frame's normal shaking opens hairline cracks in it, typically right where the line bends around a chassis member. In dry, low-humidity regions this accelerates because arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall.
Fuel chemistry is the second. Ethanol-blended gasoline carries water in suspension and slowly degrades the inner liner, softening it and leaving gum deposits. A machine that sits idle for weeks with fuel in the system hands that reaction all the time it needs. Because the attack comes from both surfaces, a hose can look reasonable while its interior sheds material toward the injectors, and that is why elapsed service life justifies replacement on its own.
Symptoms That Point at the Hose
Any of these should send you looking:
- Gasoline collecting under the frame or wetting the skid plate after the quad has been parked
- A fuel odor that clings to the tank area and gets sharper right after key-off while pressure is still held
- Fine cracking at the bends, a chalky gray surface, or a length of hose that feels rigid rather than springy
- The engine bogging under load, breaking up lean at higher rpm, or acting as if the tank were nearly empty
- Dirt caked into a ring at a fitting, which is what dried fuel residue looks like after weeks of seepage
On a pressurized line a pinhole leak frequently atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so an odor with no visible puddle is still worth acting on.
Gear, Clamps, and a Ventilation Plan
Have all of this ready:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves
- An approved container for captured fuel plus a wide drain pan
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not carburetor line
- New clamps in the matching style, and a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is used at the tank
- Line-clamping pliers to close off a low-pressure section, compensating for the missing petcock
- Hand tools for the bodywork, a razor knife, and clean rags
The genuine hazard here is vapor. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air, so they settle at floor level and stay there rather than dispersing upward, which puts them right where you are working. Do this outdoors or with the shop door fully open and keep air moving low. Unplug chargers and heaters, extinguish pilot lights, and keep an extinguisher within reach of the machine.
Relieving Pressure Before Anything Opens
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a second or two until it stalls out from lack of supply, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. That takes the pressure out and makes it impossible for the pump to run while you are working. What remains is a hose holding a modest amount of residual fuel, so slide the drain pan underneath and lay a rag across the first fitting you open.
Coaxing the Old Hose Off
Pull the seat and both side panels, then follow the line from the tank outlet to the throttle body and note every clip. Slide each clamp well back before applying force to a barb. Spring clips squeeze open with pliers and worm-gear clamps loosen and slide. A quick-connect coupler releases when you press its tabs squarely and pull straight back; levering it at an angle will crack the aged plastic collar.
Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle rotation instead of a hard pull. If a hose end has cemented itself onto its fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than risking the fitting. Take photographs of the routing, the clearance points around the front driveline, and every retaining clip while the old hose is still installed and showing you the correct path.
Fitting and Retaining the New Line
Cut the replacement to the exact length of the original. A long hose sags into frame tubes or front drive components and abrades through, which is the usual reason a fresh installation leaks a season later. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and assemble it dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray off the fittings entirely, because a lubricated sealing surface is precisely how pressurized fuel creeps past a clamp. Warm a stubborn hose end in hot water for a few seconds and it will slide on.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each connection and tighten them evenly, firm but not cutting into the rubber. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push it home until the collar clicks and then pull to verify the latch has engaged; that fitting needs no clamp. Reinstall the hose in all of its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and rotating hardware.
Sign-Off Leak Inspection
Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you check both joints while the area is dry and easy to read. Wipe each fitting with a clean rag and watch for a bead forming. Then start the V-twin, let it idle, and inspect the whole run again with heat and vibration present. Several minutes of dry idling plus a slow lap of the yard should come before the panels go back on.
Finally, keep the filter's location in mind. On this injected 1000R it lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, not inline on the hose you just changed. Fresh line resolves hose failures only, so if the machine still runs starved afterward, the in-tank module is the logical next area to examine.
