Plenty of home mechanics dive into a fuel hose swap the way they would on an old carbureted quad, and on a 2018 Kodiak 700 4x4 EPS IRS that approach ends with gasoline on the floor. This machine is fuel injected, and the difference shows up in the very first step you take.

The First Thing to Know About This Fuel System

There is no petcock. Nothing on this Kodiak lets you close off fuel with a lever, because the pump lives inside the tank and pressurizes the supply hose whenever the key is on. Residual pressure lingers after shutdown as well, so the line stays charged for a while after the engine stops.

Practically, that means the job begins at the fuse box: pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls and will not restart, then shut the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable. It also means the fitting at the pump flange may be a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than a barb with a clamp, and that line-clamping pliers belong in your kit for pinching off a low-pressure section since no valve is available.

Aging Rubber Explained

The hose you are removing likely looks worse in cross section than it does on the surface. Plasticizers give new fuel line its flexibility, and years of engine heat drive them steadily out until the wall is stiff and glassy. A hose that cannot flex has to crack, and cracks begin at the bends where the 686cc single's vibration and the movement of the independent rear suspension concentrate stress.

Climate and fuel each add their own pressure. Dry, low-humidity air draws moisture out of the rubber and hardens it from the outside inward, so identical machines age differently depending on where they are kept. Ethanol-blended pump gas works the inner liner instead, pulling water into the fuel and degrading the hose from within, while gum and varnish accumulate in the passage during any stretch the quad sits with fuel in it. Failure from both directions at once is exactly why calendar age matters as much as what you can see.

Field Symptoms

Here is what a dying line looks like in practice:

  • Fuel pooled on the skid plate or floor after the machine has been parked for a few hours
  • A sharp gasoline smell, strongest immediately after shutdown while pressure remains in the circuit
  • Fine crazing, chalky discoloration, or a hardened section you notice when squeezing the hose
  • A grime-caked ring around a fitting, left by fuel weeping and drying over and over
  • Bogging under load, hesitation on hard acceleration, or the feel of an empty tank when it is not empty

Do not dismiss odor with no visible drip. Pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole can atomize before it reaches the ground, which makes your nose the more sensitive instrument on this platform.

Bench Prep and Safety

Stage gloves, a sealed fuel-rated container, hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, new clamps of the matching style, line-clamping pliers, a quick-disconnect release tool if needed, drivers and sockets for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, a razor knife, a flashlight, and rags.

Buy hose specifically rated for injection service rather than ordinary carburetor line, since low-pressure tubing can seep or balloon once the pump comes up. On safety, gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, pooling exactly where water heater pilots, shop heaters, cord connections, and battery chargers sit. Work outdoors or with the door fully open so air moves down low, physically remove ignition sources from the area rather than trusting they are off, keep an extinguisher within reach, and leave the battery disconnected while lines are open.

Removal Around the Front Driveline

With pressure already relieved, take off the seat and side plastics to expose the tank, the pump module on top of it, and the hose run heading to the throttle body. Slide a drain pan underneath and cover the first joint with a rag, because standing fuel comes out the moment a connection breaks.

Move any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing its fitting. On a locking coupler, press the release tabs squarely and pull straight off with no side load; aged plastic collars snap under prying. At a barbed fitting, break the varnish bond with a gentle quarter twist before applying pull, and slit a hardened section lengthwise with the razor rather than fighting it off the spigot. Pay attention to routing as it comes apart. This 4x4 carries a front differential, the EPS unit and its wiring occupy space near the steering shaft, and the independent rear layout adds frame structure, so the factory path uses defined clips to keep the hose off the exhaust and away from anything that turns. Seating and Clamping

Cut the replacement to match the old hose exactly, square across the end so it seats flat. Surplus length is not a cushion; it sags into a frame tube and abrades through, or crowds the steering area where the power steering hardware already lives.

Push each end onto its fitting until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble dry throughout. Grease, oil, and silicone all create a slip path that lets pressurized fuel creep out from under a clamp and encourages the hose to walk off the barb over time, so keep them away from the sealing surfaces entirely. A tight end softens in hot water within a few seconds and then slides on unaided. Locate each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly to snug rather than crushed, since a band bitten deep into the rubber becomes the next leak. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until it clicks and tug firmly to verify it latched, and add no clamp. Restore the hose to all of its original clips before closing up.

Pressure Up and Inspect

Reinstall the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle brings the circuit up to pressure and gives you the best possible chance to spot a bad joint while everything around it is still clean and dry. Wipe both connections with a fresh rag, then inspect again with the flashlight from below where a droplet would gather.

Start the engine and check a third time at idle, letting it run several minutes and blipping the throttle to add vibration to the test. Keep in mind that the fuel filter on this injected Kodiak is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline element on the hose you just replaced, so a fresh line does nothing for a restricted filter. If fuel delivery still feels weak after a leak-free installation, that module is the next thing to examine. With both joints dry, reinstall the plastics and seat, then ride a short slow loop and take one final look underneath.
