There is one detail that decides how this job goes, and it is worth settling before you pick up a wrench. The 2018 Kodiak 450 EPS is fuel injected, not carbureted. There is no petcock beneath the tank to shut off flow, the hose you are replacing belongs to a pressurized circuit fed by a pump that lives inside the tank, and that pressure is still there long after the key is off. Handle that first and the rest of the replacement is a calm, methodical hour in the garage.
Establishing That There Is No Petcock to Turn
On a carbureted utility quad you would close a fuel valve, drain the float bowl, and start pulling clamps. The 421cc Kodiak 450 EPS gives you none of those. Fuel travels from the in-tank pump module under pressure to the throttle body, the filter is part of that pump assembly rather than sitting inline where you can see it, and the connections may use self-locking quick-connect couplers instead of simple worm-gear clamps. That means relieving pressure is step one, and a set of line-clamping pliers is worth having on the bench for any low-pressure section you need to pinch off.
What Kills a Fuel Hose Over Time
Rubber ages whether the Kodiak is working or parked. Heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, so what was once pliable turns hard and eventually crazes at every bend and clamp. Dry climates make it worse by pulling moisture out of the outer surface, which is why quads in arid country show cracking years earlier than machines in humid regions. Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from within, drawing in water and slowly breaking down the liner, especially when a machine sits for weeks with fuel standing in the system. The two processes meet in the middle and leave you with hose that is brittle outside and soft inside.
Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
- A gasoline smell around the seat area, often strongest right after shutdown while the system still holds pressure
- A wet ring or dust-caked stain at either fitting where fuel has seeped and dried
- Visible cracking, chalky discoloration, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching the hose
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard acceleration, or an engine that behaves as though the tank is low
- Extended cranking before the engine catches, which can point to a circuit that is not holding pressure
Because this is a pressurized system, a small leak may atomize and evaporate rather than drip, so a persistent fuel odor with no puddle still deserves investigation.
Tools, Parts, and Gasoline Handling
Gather nitrile gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, an approved sealed fuel container, replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps suited to the fittings you find, line-clamping pliers, a quick-disconnect tool if the couplers call for one, sockets for the seat and plastics, and clean rags. Do the work outdoors or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles low, so ventilation near the floor matters more than an open window at head height. Keep heaters, grinders, and pilot lights out of the area entirely.
Relieving Pressure and Removing the Old Line
Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls, turn the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so both ends of the hose are accessible. Slide the pan underneath and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, since residual fuel will still escape. For a quick-connect coupler, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without levering sideways, because aged plastic collars crack easily. For a clamped end, walk the clamp back first, then twist the hose to break the varnish bond at the barb. Photograph the routing before the hose is fully free: this is a 4x4 chassis with On-Command drive, so the line passes additional frame clearance points and front differential hardware that a 2WD machine does not have.
Fitting the New Hose and Sealing the Circuit
Cut the replacement to the original length so the hose neither sags into moving parts nor pulls at a fitting. Push each end fully home dry. No grease, oil, or silicone belongs on a fuel fitting, and on a pressurized system that rule is absolute — lubricant on a sealing surface is exactly the path fuel needs to creep out. Warm water softens a stubborn end enough to slide on. Set clamps just behind the raised bead and snug them evenly. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched, with no clamp added. Return the hose to its factory guides so it stays clear of hot exhaust, the front driveline, and the electric power steering wiring.
Pressure Testing Before the First Ride
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect the joints while the machine is still cold and dry. Wipe both connections with a clean white rag and look closely. Then start the Kodiak, let it idle, and check again with the engine running and vibrating. Only after several minutes of dry, leak-free running should the plastics and seat go back on. Remember that a fresh hose does nothing for a clogged in-tank filter, so if fuel delivery still feels soft afterward, that pump module is the logical next step.
