The VLX 700 leans toward the recreational end of the Alterra line, with a chassis meant to be ridden quickly rather than just worked. Sustained throttle and plenty of heat cycles are exactly what age the fuel hose under the bodywork. On the 2018 Alterra VLX 700 that hose is part of an electronic fuel-injection system, so an in-tank pump keeps it pressurized with the key on, and you will find no petcock and no carburetor bowl anywhere in the layout.

Rounding Up the Right Supplies

Have all of it staged before you touch a fitting:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and safety glasses, since a fitting can spit fuel as it comes apart
  • A shallow drain pan and a sealed, approved container for the fuel you catch
  • Hose rated for injection pressure in the same inside diameter as the piece coming off
  • New clamps in the correct style, plus clamp pliers or a small flat-blade driver
  • Line-clamping pliers, which take over the shutoff duty a petcock would handle
  • A razor knife, a good supply of rags, and hand tools for the seat and side panels

Then set up the space properly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and drifts toward water heater pilots, shop heaters, and anything else that sparks down low. Roll the VLX outdoors or open the door fully, avoid grinding and torch work while fuel is exposed, and set an extinguisher on the ground within reach rather than on a shelf.

Puddles, Odors, and Stumbles

A hose on the way out usually leaves a trail of evidence:

  • A damp film or small puddle of gasoline on the skid plate or floor after the machine has been parked
  • A fuel smell that lingers, sharpest in the first minutes after shutdown while pressure is still in the line
  • Hairline cracks, a chalky bloom, or a hard section that will not compress between your fingers
  • Bogging at wide throttle, hesitation as the revs climb, or a lean stumble that feels like low fuel
  • Dirt built up in a ring at a fitting, which is dust clinging to fuel that has been weeping and drying

Keep in mind that a pressurized leak behaves differently from a gravity-fed one. A pinhole in this hose may atomize fuel so completely that nothing ever drips, meaning smell alone can be the whole symptom set.

What the Years Do to Rubber Hose

Fuel hose is on a clock from the day it is installed. The plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly cook out under heat from the 695cc single, and every season leaves the hose harder and less able to absorb chassis flex. Once it goes rigid, splits appear at the bends where movement concentrates. Riders in dry, low-humidity country reach that point earlier, since arid air continually pulls moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in.

Ethanol in modern pump gas works the interior at the same time. Alcohol draws water into the fuel, that combination breaks down the inner liner, and the liner then softens and releases fine debris toward the injector. Let a VLX 700 sit through an off-season with fuel in the system and gumming has months to take hold. Because both the inside and outside of the hose degrade at once, its age is as meaningful as how it looks under a flashlight.

The Removal Sequence

Relieve pressure before anything else: pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls out, key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so the hose run to the throttle body is fully exposed. Position the pan under the joint you plan to open and drape a rag over it, because the hose still carries fuel once the pump goes quiet.

Move each clamp well down the hose before you separate a joint. On a locking quick-connect, press both tabs squarely and pull straight out; levering to the side is what snaps collars hardened by years of heat. Twist the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling hard, and if an end will not release, split it lengthwise with the knife and peel it away. Take note of the routing as it comes free. This is a 4x4 chassis, so the front differential and driveshaft fill space a two-wheel-drive machine leaves open, and the hose passes through clearance points that need to be duplicated on reassembly.

Fitting the Replacement

Cut the new hose to the length of the old one exactly. Extra hose drifts toward exhaust heat or wears against a frame tube, and a short piece keeps both fittings pulling all the time. Slide each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder of its barb. Nothing lubricated belongs near these fittings; grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing surface is precisely how pressurized fuel escapes past a clamp. Warm water for a few seconds softens a stiff end enough to push it home.

Set clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without crushing the rubber. If the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until the collar clicks and tug to verify it latched; that fitting seals on its own and needs no clamp. Return the hose to every factory clip so its path stays clear of the driveline and hot components.

Checking Your Work

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you study clean, dry fittings for the very first bead of seepage. Wipe both joints with a light rag, start the engine, and inspect again at idle and with a few quick throttle blips. Several leak-free minutes should pass before the bodywork goes back on.

One platform detail to file away: on the injected VLX 700 the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly inside the tank rather than an inline piece on the hose you just changed. New line cures leaks and collapse, but a restriction sits inside the tank, so that assembly is where to look next if the machine still feels soft at higher rpm.
