Respect the Gasoline Before You Respect the Procedure

Every part of this job is manageable at home, and the single thing that turns it dangerous has nothing to do with mechanical skill. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It does not rise and vent out a window, it sinks, spreads across the floor, and travels along the concrete until it reaches something warm. Water heater pilot lights, propane shop heaters, and battery charger contacts all sit at exactly that height, which is why fuel work belongs outdoors or in a bay with the overhead door completely open and air moving low in the space.

Before you start on the 2018 KingQuad 400FSi, shut off anything with a flame or a spark, put an extinguisher within reach, and set up a sealed approved container for whatever fuel you capture. Cap it between pours, keep the catch pan covered when you are not using it, and step outside for air if the fumes get strong enough to notice in your throat. Gloves and eye protection are not optional either, since a pressurized fitting can spit as it lets go.

Fuel System Identification

The FSi is the fuel-injected KingQuad 400, running the five speed semi-automatic gearbox with 4x4 drive. That matters immediately, because there is no petcock under the tank and no fuel valve to close. A pump inside the tank pressurizes the hose running to the throttle body, and that hose holds pressure after the key is off. Relieving it comes first, always, and line clamping pliers substitute for the shutoff the machine lacks.

Drive configuration touches routing without changing method. Front differential hardware, the driveshaft, and extra frame structure on a 4x4 crowd the hose path, so the factory clips and clearance points genuinely protect the line from exhaust heat and turning components. On a two-wheel-drive layout that run would be straighter and more open. Photograph the routing before the old hose comes out.

The Aging Process Behind the Failure

Rubber fuel hose is a time-limited component. Plasticizers keep it supple, and they migrate out of the hose wall gradually until the material cracks instead of flexing. Engine heat cycles hurry that transition, and the vibration and frame flex a utility quad absorbs on rutted ground turn shallow surface cracks into real leak paths over a handful of seasons.

Where the quad lives sets the timeline. Dry, low humidity air pulls moisture out of the rubber and hardens it from the outside in, which explains why two machines of the same year can be in completely different condition. Ethanol blended pump gas attacks from the other side, drawing in water and degrading the inner liner during any stretch when fuel sits still. A hose subject to both influences can look serviceable while shedding material toward the injector, so an original hose on a machine this age deserves replacement on principle.

Symptoms and Inspection Points

  • Fuel smell that hangs around the quad, most pronounced just after shutdown while pressure remains
  • A drip trail, damp streak, or stain on the skid plate or the ground beneath the frame
  • Fine cracks that open when you bend the hose, or a section that has gone hard and glassy
  • Grit caked into a wet ring at either fitting, the standard signature of a slow weep
  • Bogging under load, stumbling off idle, or lean surging that mimics an empty tank
  • A swollen or gummy hose end where it slips over a barb

Because the supply side runs under pressure, small leaks often atomize and evaporate before they can drip. A persistent odor over clean concrete is still a finding worth chasing.

Removing the Old Line

Start by relieving pressure. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Lift the seat and remove any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run to the throttle body.

Position the catch pan and drape a rag over the fitting you are about to open, because residual fuel stays in the hose after pressure is gone. Move worm gear or spring clamps well back before disturbing the joint. Where a locking quick-connect is used, press both release tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off with no sideways leverage, since a plastic collar of this vintage cracks readily. Break the varnish bond at a stuck barb with a gentle twist rather than pulling hard, and if the hose stays welded on, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away. The hose is already scrap. The fitting is not.

Installing the New Hose

Cut the replacement to match the old piece exactly, using hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter rather than general purpose carburetor line. Extra length becomes a chafe point on a frame tube or an interference at full steering lock, and a short piece pulls at both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and keep the whole installation dry. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant stay off fuel fittings without exception, because lubricant on the sealing surface is precisely what allows pressurized fuel to creep past a clamp. Hot water softens a stubborn end without leaving anything slippery behind.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to firm, not to the point of cutting into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect takes no clamp and is done once it clicks and holds against a hard tug. Route the hose back through every original clip, then confirm clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline before reinstalling plastics.

Proving the Repair

Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a dry system to inspect for the first sign of weeping. Wipe every connection with a clean pale rag so any trace of fuel is unmistakable. Then start the engine and check at idle, take a slow lap, and inspect once more with the machine warm before you call it finished.

One structural detail rounds out the picture. On the injected KingQuad 400FSi the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, so a fresh line does nothing for a restricted filter. If the machine still acts fuel starved after a leak-free installation, that assembly is the next place to investigate.
