This is a fuel-injected machine, so the hose between the tank and the throttle body holds pressure long after the key comes out, and the wrong first move soaks your forearm. Lay out the parts and the plan, and the actual hose swap takes less time than pulling the bodywork.

Assembling the Right Parts and Tools

  • Fuel hose rated for injection pressure, cut from a length matching the original inside diameter
  • New fuel-rated clamps in the correct size for the barbed end
  • A quick-disconnect release tool, since the tank-side coupler on this platform latches rather than clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off flow, because there is no petcock on an injected Sportsman
  • Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a stack of clean shop rags
  • A drain pan and a sealed, approved fuel container
  • Sockets and a short flat-blade screwdriver for panels and clamps

One genuine safety point deserves its own sentence: gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it rolls off the machine and collects at floor level where you cannot see or feel it. Work outdoors or with a door fully open and air moving low through the space, and keep every spark, flame, and appliance pilot light well clear of the area.

Confirming How This Sportsman Feeds Fuel

Nothing on the XP 1000 resembles the gravity system on an older carbureted quad. Instead of a valve under the tank you can twist shut, an electric pump lives inside the tank and pushes fuel forward under pressure through the supply hose. That difference drives the whole procedure: pressure has to be released before disassembly, the tank side often uses a self-locking coupler instead of a clamp, and the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module rather than hanging inline where a carbureted machine would put a small serviceable canister.

How Fuel Hose Deteriorates

Rubber ages chemically whether the machine is ridden or parked. Plasticizers leach out with heat cycles until the wall stiffens and cracks, and riders in arid climates see that hardening arrive years early because dry air steadily draws moisture from the hose surface. From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel left standing during a slow stretch of the calendar absorbs water and degrades the liner, leaving gummy residue and softened material that can migrate downstream. The upshot is that a hose can pass a glance and still be finished.

Recognizing a Line About to Fail

Symptoms tend to show up in this order:

  • A faint but persistent gasoline odor around the machine, sharpest just after shutdown
  • Surface crazing or fine splits, usually starting where the hose stretches over a fitting
  • A stiff, glassy feel when you squeeze the hose, or a chalky texture on the outside
  • Dust caked into a ring at a joint where fuel has been seeping and drying
  • Wet residue or a small puddle beneath the frame after an overnight sit
  • The engine bogging, hesitating, or acting low on fuel with plenty in the tank

Because escaping fuel on a pressurized system frequently atomizes and disappears, do not wait for a visible puddle to take the other signs seriously.

Removal Without the Mess

Relieve pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block, crank the engine until it fires and dies, switch off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the panel covering the tank area, then slip a drain pan under the work zone. Drape a rag over the joint you break first to catch the residual fuel still trapped in the hose.

Move clamps back along the hose before disturbing anything else. Squeeze both tabs on a quick-connect and pull it straight back — sideways prying splits collars that have gone brittle with age and heat. If a hose end has bonded to its barb, twist it lightly to break the varnish seal, or slice it lengthwise and peel it away instead of forcing the fitting. Trace and photograph the routing as the line comes out. This all-wheel-drive chassis wraps its supply hose around front differential hardware and extra frame members that a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry, and every retaining clip along that path exists for a reason.

Fitting the New Hose

Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Seat each end fully on its barb, working the hose on dry, and warm the end in hot water if it resists. Skip grease, oil, and silicone entirely on any sealing surface — lubricant there is an invitation for pressurized fuel to creep out under the clamp. Position fresh clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten them evenly; you want firm, not crushed. A locking quick-connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged to confirm engagement, with no clamp added. Snap the hose back into its original clips so it cannot rest against the exhaust or the front driveline.

Leak Check and Final Steps

Reinstall the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. The pump runs with each cycle and pressurizes the hose, giving you a dry-surface inspection at both connections. Run a clean rag around each joint, start the engine, and look again at idle for misting or beading. Blip the throttle a few times and keep watching. Only when the connections stay bone dry should you refit the panels and seat. If the 2018 XP 1000 still stumbles under load after all of that, the in-tank filter inside the pump assembly is the logical next suspect, since a new hose cannot clear a plugged element.
