The single most useful thing to establish before touching the fuel plumbing on a 2018 Sportsman Touring XP 1000 is that this machine has no fuel valve. Electronic fuel injection on the ProStar twin means an electric pump inside the tank feeds a pressurized supply hose, and the pressure remains in that hose long after the key comes out. Every step below flows from that one fact.

Working With a Pressurized System

On a carbureted quad you close a petcock, crack a fitting, and let gravity do the rest. Here, opening a fitting without relieving pressure produces a fuel spray instead of a drip. The correct sequence is to pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a couple of seconds until it stops firing, shut the key off, and then disconnect the battery negative cable. Line-clamping pliers earn their place in your toolbox on this machine, since they are the only way to pinch off a low-pressure or vent section that would otherwise drain.

Two more platform details shape the job. The fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module instead of hanging inline where you can reach it, so a fresh hose has no effect on a clogged filter. And the supply hose may terminate in a locking quick-connect coupler rather than a simple barb and clamp, which changes how you separate it.

Chassis Layout and Line Routing

The Touring version of the XP 1000 rides on a stretched frame with a passenger seat and rear rack, so there is more bodywork between you and the fuel plumbing than on a single-seat Sportsman. Plan on removing the seat plus side panels to get honest access. The on-demand all-wheel drive system also fills the area ahead of the engine with a front differential and driveshaft, and the hose is routed around that hardware through a series of clips. Photograph the path before anything comes out, because a line rerouted even slightly can end up resting against exhaust or a rotating component.

How These Hoses Fail

Rubber fuel line loses the softening compounds in its wall over time, leaving material that is hard, glossy, and quick to crack. The heat of a 1000 twin speeds that up, and the vibration of a heavy Touring chassis on rough ground focuses that stress on the bends. Riders in dry climates see hoses stiffen sooner, since the surrounding air steadily pulls moisture out of the rubber.

Ethanol-blended fuel adds a second failure path from the inside. The alcohol pulls moisture into the fuel and slowly breaks down the liner, and a machine that sits for months with a partial tank ends up with gum and loose material inside a hose that still looks acceptable outside. That is why elapsed years matter as much as visual condition when deciding whether to replace.

Symptoms That Should Prompt a Closer Look

  • A fuel puddle or dark damp shadow on the ground under a parked machine
  • A gasoline odor around the tank that has not gone away, strongest just after shutdown
  • Visible cracking, a chalky texture, or a hard section you can feel through a glove
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or the sense that the XP 1000 is starving for fuel with plenty in the tank
  • Dust stuck in a ring around a fitting, which is dried fuel residue from a slow weep

Because the supply side is pressurized, a small leak may mist and evaporate without ever forming a drop, so a fuel smell with no visible wetness still deserves a fitting-by-fitting inspection.

Supplies and Safe Working Conditions

Stage everything before you begin: gloves and eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed fuel-rated container, injection-rated hose in the correct inside diameter, fresh clamps of the matching style, line-clamping pliers, a quick-connect release tool, hand tools for the plastics, a razor knife, and a generous supply of rags.

Then deal with the air. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects along the floor, which is exactly where extension cords, heaters, and pilot lights tend to live. Work outdoors or with the door fully open so air moves at ground level, keep every ignition source out of the space, and seal the container of drained fuel instead of letting it sit open beside you.

Removal, Installation, and Verification

With pressure relieved and the panels off, set the pan beneath the work and cover the first fitting with a rag before you break it. Slide clamps back along the hose, then separate quick-connects by pressing the tabs evenly and pulling straight off with no sideways prying. A hose fused to a barb by varnish releases with a slow twist, and one that truly will not move should be slit lengthwise and peeled off to spare the fitting.

Cut the new hose to the original length, then push both ends on dry until they bottom out. Keep grease and oil away from the fittings completely, since lubricant on a sealing surface lets pressurized fuel creep past the clamp. Warm water softens a tight end if needed. Place clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly; a self-locking quick-connect needs only a push until it clicks and a firm pull to confirm the latch. Route the hose back through every factory clip.

Finish with a proper pressure check. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking so the pump loads the line while the joints are dry. Wipe both connections, start the engine, and study each fitting at idle and again after a few throttle blips. Only after several minutes of dry running should the bodywork go back on, and a look underneath following your first short ride is worth the two minutes it takes.
