Fuel Line Replacement Steps for the 2018 Kymco MXU 700i

A leaking fuel line is one of the few faults on a quad that deserves to stop the ride immediately. Gasoline escaping near a hot engine is a different category of problem than a worn bushing or a soft brake lever. On a 2018 MXU 700i that urgency is compounded by the fuel system itself: this machine is injected, so the line carries pressure from a pump inside the tank and does not simply stop flowing when you switch the key off.

Getting Set Up and Working Safely

Collect all of the following before touching the machine, so you are never hunting for a tool with a fuel line open in your hand:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container to capture fuel
  • Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not carburetor hose
  • New clamps appropriate to your fitting style, plus a release tool if a self-locking quick-connect is used
  • Line-clamping pliers, which take the place of the petcock an injected machine does not have
  • Socket set, screwdrivers, pliers, a razor knife, and a substantial stack of rags

Ventilation is the part of this job people underestimate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it does not rise and dissipate. It sinks to the floor and drifts along the ground toward whatever ignition source happens to be in the room, whether that is a water heater pilot, a space heater, or a charger. Open the garage door fully and put a fan on the floor pushing air out, or better yet work outdoors. Shut down standing pilot flames, keep the battery disconnected while the system is open, keep hot work lights well away, and lay fuel-damp rags outside to dry rather than sealing them in a can.

Reading the Signs Early

  • A gasoline smell around the tank that peaks in the first minutes after shutdown, while pressure remains in the circuit
  • A damp area on the skid plate or the floor, though pressurized fuel frequently atomizes and evaporates before it drips
  • Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a hardened section that keeps a crease when you pinch it
  • Fuel-stained dust ringing a fitting, which is what slow weeping leaves behind
  • Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or a lean-feeling engine at higher revs

Work the hose between your fingers along its whole length as part of the inspection. Rubber in good condition compresses and springs back, while a line that has hardened feels rigid or holds the crease. Since a pinhole on the pressure side may never leave a visible mark, the smell is often your only early warning on this machine.

What Causes the Rubber to Fail

The hose gives up in two different ways at once. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep it flexible migrate out of the material and evaporate over the years, leaving a hard, glassy wall that cracks rather than flexes. Heat cycling from the 695cc single speeds the loss, and the vibration and chassis flex of real trail and work use finish the job on the surface. Dry climates make it happen faster by drawing moisture out of the hose wall.

From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline degrades the liner. It absorbs water vapor from the air, and the resulting mixture softens the inner surface until it swells and releases fine particles toward the injector. Long idle stretches with that fuel standing in the system leave gum and varnish behind, restricting flow and cementing the hose to its fittings. On a pressurized circuit these effects deserve earlier attention than they would on a gravity-fed carbureted machine, because the compromised wall is holding pressure every time the pump runs.

Relieving Pressure and Taking the Line Off

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine until it stalls to burn off most of the stored pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable so the pump cannot be energized with a fitting open. Take off the seat and enough plastic to see the tank connection and the run toward the throttle body simultaneously, and photograph the routing along with every clip.

Position a drain pan and drape a rag over each fitting before opening it, because a bled line still holds residual fuel. Where clamps are used, walk them well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Where a self-locking quick-connect is fitted, depress the tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off, never levering it to one side, since plastic collars that have aged in an engine bay split under that kind of force. Use clamping pliers to close off any low-pressure section that would otherwise siphon.

Twist the hose gently to break the dried varnish bond at each barb rather than pulling hard on the fitting. If a section will not release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off. Note carefully how the line crosses the front differential hardware and frame crossmembers on this four-wheel-drive chassis, since the path is more crowded than it would be on a two-wheel-drive quad and the new hose needs to follow it exactly.

Getting the Replacement Seated Properly

Cut the replacement to match the original length. Excess hose sags toward the front driveline or rubs a frame tube until it wears through, while a short piece pulls at both fittings whenever the engine rocks on its mounts. Slide each end onto its barb dry and push until it seats fully past the raised bead.

No grease, no oil, no silicone spray on the fittings. Lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route to migrate out from under the hose, and tightening the clamp harder will not close that path. If the hose is stiff, hold the end in hot water for thirty seconds and it will slip on without a fight. Fit new clamps just behind the bead at each end and tighten evenly until the hose stops rotating by hand, stopping short of cutting into the wall. If the tank end uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm the latch has taken, leaving it clamp-free. Return the hose to its factory clips, well clear of exhaust heat, the front driveline, and suspension movement.

Confirming the Repair Before You Ride

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, and that is precisely when a joint that is not fully seated will begin to seep while the surrounding area is still clean and dry. Run a bare finger around both connections and look for beading or a fresh spot on a rag placed underneath.

With both joints dry, start the engine and inspect again while it idles and shakes, then blip the throttle a few times and check once more. Take a short low-speed lap and give both fittings one last look before the plastics go back on for good. A final platform note worth carrying forward: the fuel filter on this machine is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than being an inline part on the hose you just replaced. A fresh line will not cure a clogged filter, so if the 700i still feels starved under sustained load, that in-tank unit is the logical next step.
