Replacing the Fuel Line on Your 2018 Kymco MXU 450i

Fuel hose does not last as long as the machine it feeds. That is worth understanding before you go looking for a defect, because the rubber on a 2018 MXU 450i is doing hard duty: holding pressurized gasoline, absorbing engine heat and vibration, and flexing every time the chassis works. Eventually it hardens and cracks. Replacing it is well within reach at home, provided you respect the one thing that separates this machine from a carbureted quad, which is that the fuel circuit is pressurized by a pump inside the tank.

What Ages the Rubber

The outside of the hose loses its plasticizers over the years. Those compounds are what keep the rubber soft, and as they migrate out and evaporate the wall becomes hard, glassy, and unable to absorb movement. Heat cycling from the engine sitting nearby accelerates the loss, and once flexibility is gone, the vibration of a big single and the flex of a working frame begin to check the surface into fine cracks. Riders in dry, high-desert country reach this point sooner, because low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens it from the outside in.

The inside deteriorates chemically. Ethanol in ordinary pump gasoline attracts water vapor, and that mixture attacks the inner liner until it softens, swells, and starts shedding fine particles downstream toward the injector. Fuel that sits for months during periods of non-use adds gum and varnish on top of the damage, restricting flow and bonding the hose firmly to its fittings. Because this circuit is pressurized rather than gravity fed, a weakened wall carries more risk than the same wear would on a carbureted machine.

Recognizing a Line on the Way Out

  • A fuel smell around the tank that is sharpest immediately after shutdown, while pressure is still in the system
  • A damp spot on the skid plate or floor, though pressurized fuel often atomizes and evaporates without leaving a puddle
  • Surface cracking, chalky discoloration, or a stiffened section that keeps a crease when pinched
  • Fuel-stained dust caked in a ring at a fitting, the signature of slow weeping under pressure
  • Bogging under load, hesitation on hard acceleration, or a lean-feeling engine at higher revs

Because a small pressure-side leak may never drip, your nose is a better instrument than your eyes here. If the smell is there and the hose feels hard, that is enough to proceed.

Setting Up: Parts, Tools, and Ventilation

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container for the fuel you capture
  • Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not carburetor hose
  • New clamps matched to your fitting style, and a release tool if your machine uses a quick-connect coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, which take the place of the petcock this model does not have
  • Socket set, screwdrivers, pliers, a razor knife, and a generous supply of rags

The safety note is straightforward and genuine. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and travels along the ground toward any ignition source in the space. Ventilation down low is what protects you: open the main garage door fully and put a fan on the floor moving air out, or simply do the work outside. Shut off water heaters and furnaces with standing pilots, leave the battery disconnected while the system is open, keep hot work lights and chargers away, and let fuel-soaked rags dry outdoors instead of sealing them in a can.

Depressurizing and Getting the Old Hose Off

Before a single fitting moves, take the pressure out of the circuit. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stalls, turn the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. That sequence bleeds most of the pressure and guarantees the pump cannot run while a connection is open. Remove the seat and enough plastic to see the tank and the hose route toward the throttle body, then photograph the routing, the clips, and each clearance point.

Slide a pan under the work area and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, since a depressurized line still holds residual fuel. Where a clamp secures the hose, walk it back along the rubber before disturbing the joint. Where you find a self-locking quick-connect, depress the tabs squarely and pull straight off rather than levering sideways, because aged plastic collars crack when pried. Use the clamping pliers to shut off any low-pressure section that would otherwise siphon.

Rotate the hose gently to shear the varnish bond at each barb rather than pulling hard. If a section will not budge, split it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away. On this four-wheel-drive chassis the line negotiates front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers on its way forward, which a two-wheel-drive quad would not have, so record its exact path before it comes fully free.

Routing and Securing the Replacement

Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed. Extra hose sags toward the front driveline or wears against a frame tube, and a short piece tugs at both fittings whenever the engine shifts on its mounts. Push each end onto its barb dry, seating it fully past the raised bead.

Keep lubricant off the fittings entirely. Grease, oil, or silicone on a sealing face gives pressurized fuel a route to escape from under the hose, and adding clamp tension does not close that path. If the new hose is too stiff, hold the end in hot water for thirty seconds and it will slide on unaided. Position new clamps just behind the bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly until the hose no longer rotates by hand. For a quick-connect at the tank, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm the latch has engaged, leaving it clamp-free as designed. Clip the hose back into its original guides, well clear of exhaust heat, the front driveline, and suspension travel.

Pressurizing and Checking for Leaks

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and brings the circuit up to pressure, which is exactly the condition you want for inspection while everything is still clean and dry. Feel around both joints with a bare finger and look for any bead of fuel or fresh wetness on a rag laid underneath.

With both connections dry, start the engine and inspect again while it idles, then rev it a few times and look once more. Give it several minutes of leak-free running before the plastics go back on. One closing note specific to this machine: the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline element on the hose you just replaced. A new line does nothing for a clogged filter, so if the 450i still feels starved under load after a clean installation, that in-tank unit is where to look next.
