Changing Out the Fuel Line on a 2018 Kymco MXU 150X

Fuel hose is a wear item, even though nothing on the parts list treats it that way. It sits in an engine bay, absorbs heat and vibration, holds gasoline for years, and eventually gives up. On a 2018 MXU 150X the replacement is one of the friendlier jobs on the machine. This quad is carbureted, gravity fed, and two-wheel drive, which means a short and accessible hose run, no fuel pressure to manage, and no electronic components anywhere near the repair.
How the Rubber Ages
Two unrelated processes attack the same piece of hose. On the outside, the softeners blended into the rubber slowly migrate out and evaporate, leaving a wall that has gone hard and glassy. A hose in that condition cannot absorb the vibration of a single-cylinder engine or the flex of a chassis working over uneven ground, so the surface begins to check into fine cracks. Hot, arid conditions push it along faster by drawing residual moisture out of the rubber.
On the inside, the ethanol in ordinary pump gasoline is the culprit. It pulls water vapor out of the air, and that blend gradually breaks down the inner liner, which softens, swells, and releases fine particles toward the carburetor. Fuel left standing in the line for months adds gum and varnish deposits that both narrow the passage and glue the hose to its fittings. The end result is a line that can look serviceable on the outside while its interior is finished.
Laying Out Tools and Working Safely
Everything below should be on the bench before you touch a fitting:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container for drained gasoline
- New hose in the same inside diameter as the original, rated for gasoline service
- Fresh clamps in the right size, or a small clamp assortment
- Line-clamping pliers, useful if your tank valve is the vacuum-operated type with no lever to close
- Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set, clear tubing for the float bowl drain, a razor knife, and rags
The ventilation note here is genuine and worth following. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it pools at floor level and travels along the ground toward whatever might ignite it. Cracking a window six feet up accomplishes almost nothing. Open the garage door completely and set a fan on the floor to move air out, or better yet do the work outdoors. Shut down water heaters and furnaces with standing pilots, keep the battery disconnected while lines are open, and spread fuel-soaked rags outside to dry rather than sealing them in a container.
Draining and Disconnecting
Start by stopping the fuel. If your tank has a lever-type petcock, turn it to off. If you find a small vacuum line running to the valve and no lever, pinch the fuel hose closed with clamping pliers instead. Disconnect the battery negative cable, lift the seat, and pull enough plastic to see the whole run from the tank fitting to the carburetor inlet in a single view. Snap a photo of the routing and each retaining clip.
The fuel already downstream comes out through the carburetor float bowl. Slide clear tubing over the drain nipple, aim it into your container, and back the drain screw out until the bowl empties. Position a pan under the tank-side fitting and lay a rag over it as well; a closed valve does not empty the hose, and the remainder runs out the instant the connection breaks.
Walk both clamps back along the hose before disturbing either joint. Years of dried fuel residue bond rubber to metal, so twist the hose gently to shear that bond rather than pulling hard. When a section refuses to let go, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away from the barb. That approach protects the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet, both easy to bend and neither cheap to replace. With no front differential hardware in the way on this two-wheel-drive chassis, you should have clear access at both ends.
Inspection Points Worth Knowing
While the system is open, take stock of what led you here so you recognize it earlier next time:
- A damp patch or small gasoline puddle beneath the machine after it has been parked
- A strong fuel odor that lingers around the tank even after the engine has cooled
- Cracking, chalky texture, or a stiffened length that holds a crease when you squeeze it
- Fuel-stained dust collected in a ring at either barb, the classic sign of slow seepage
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation as revs build, or an engine behaving as if it is out of fuel with a full tank
That last item catches people out. Idle fuel demand on a 149cc engine is so small that a badly restricted hose still lets the quad run smoothly at a standstill, only faltering when you hold the throttle open on a climb.
Putting the Fresh Hose On
Use the old piece as a template and cut the replacement to match. Too long, and the hose sags against a frame tube and slowly wears through; too short, and it tugs on both fittings every time the engine shifts on its mounts. Push each end onto its barb dry, seating it fully past the raised bead.
Leave the grease gun and the silicone spray on the shelf. Any lubricant on a fitting gives fuel a channel to migrate out from under the hose, and tightening the clamp harder does not fix it. If the new rubber is too stiff to slide on, dip the end in hot water for thirty seconds and it will go on easily. Set each clamp just behind the barb bead and tighten evenly until the hose stops rotating by hand, stopping before the band cuts into the wall. Route the line back through its original clips, confirm clearance from exhaust heat and steering parts, and close the float bowl drain screw.
Verifying the Work
Reconnect the battery, open the valve or release the clamping pliers, and then leave the machine untouched for a minute or two. Gravity refills the hose and the float bowl, and a still, static system is where a slow seep is easiest to spot. Wipe both connections dry, check them with a fingertip, and look for spotting on a rag laid underneath.
Once you are satisfied, start the engine and inspect again with everything running and vibrating. Rev it a few times, take a short lap, then shut down and give both fittings one more look before the bodywork goes back on. Worth remembering on a carbureted machine like this: the fuel filter is an inline part you can see and swap, unlike injected models where it lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. The system is drained already, so adding a new filter to the job now leaves the whole path from tank to carburetor fresh.
