A fuel hose costs a few dollars and takes maybe an hour of your time. Ignoring one that has gone hard can cost you a ride, a tank of gas on the ground, or worse. On a 2018 Brute Force 300, everything you need to reach is right under the seat, which makes this a great job to knock out before the season gets busy.
Ten Minutes With a Flashlight
Begin with an honest inspection rather than a parts order. Pull the seat, get a light on the run of hose between the tank and the carburetor, and work along it with your fingers. Hose in good shape compresses and rebounds. Hose at the end of its service life feels stiff and glassy, and squeezing it opens fine cracks at the bends. A section that has gone soft, spongy, or slightly swollen is failing from the inside and needs replacing just as urgently as one that has hardened.
Look for evidence around the fittings too. A dusty crust ringing a barb means fuel has been seeping and drying there. Scan the floor beneath the left side of the quad for staining, and pay attention to any gasoline odor around the front bodywork — a small weep frequently evaporates before it can drip, so your nose may find the problem before your eyes do. Bogging under throttle, a lean stumble, or an engine that acts starved with fuel in the tank all point the same direction.
Gravity, a Petcock, and Nothing Else
This machine is carbureted, which sets the tone for the entire procedure. A petcock at the tank gives you a positive shut off, and beyond that valve, fuel simply falls downhill through the hose to the carburetor inlet. No pump, no pressure, no fuse to pull, and no self-locking quick-connect coupler to wrestle with. Both ends of the hose slide onto plain barbed spigots and get held there by clamps.
Use the carburetor's float bowl drain screw to your advantage. A short piece of clear tubing on the drain, aimed into a container, empties the bowl so the carburetor side comes apart nearly dry. Because this is a 2x4 chassis, there is no front differential or extra driveline hardware to route around, so the hose path stays short and open — a real access advantage over the equivalent job on a four-wheel-drive utility quad.
The Reasons Hose Gives Up
Two separate processes work against fuel line at the same time. Externally, the plasticizers that keep rubber pliable slowly migrate out of the compound, and heat from the air-cooled 271cc single accelerates that loss on the sections closest to the engine. Once the hose has stiffened, everyday vibration and frame flex over rough ground crack it where it bends and under the clamps. Dry climates make it worse by drawing moisture out of the hose wall, leaving the outer surface chalky sooner than a humid region would.
Internally, ethanol-blended pump gas degrades the liner. It holds moisture against the rubber and slowly breaks the inner surface down, releasing fine material toward the carburetor. Stagnant fuel does the most harm, which explains why a Brute Force 300 parked for months with a partial tank often needs plumbing before one that gets ridden every weekend. Age matters at least as much as appearance when you decide whether to replace.
Shopping List and Shop Rules

- An approved fuel container and a shallow catch pan
- Replacement hose in the matching inside diameter, bought slightly long
- New clamps or a small assortment, because original clamps have relaxed by now
- Clear tubing for the float bowl drain
- Screwdriver, pliers, a handful of sockets, and clean rags
Treat the gasoline itself as the hazard in this job. Its vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, which is precisely where a water heater pilot, a shop heater, or a stray spark lives. Work outside or with the overhead door fully open, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and keep grinders and torches out of the space entirely. Spilled fuel should be spread out to evaporate in open air rather than mopped into rags that sit in a closed bin.
Breaking the Old Line Loose
Close the petcock, then remove the seat and any plastic that blocks your view of the tank outlet and the carburetor inlet. Drain the float bowl into your container through the clear tube and snug the drain screw back down. Position the pan and drape a rag over the fitting you plan to open first, since the hose still holds fuel with the valve shut.
Release both clamps and slide them well back along the hose. Rather than yanking the hose off its barb, twist it in place to break the varnish that has bonded it there; a hard pull stresses the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet unnecessarily. When a hose truly will not release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off in two halves. Before the old piece is completely free, note the exact routing and any frame clip it travels through.
Making the New Connection
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Too much hose invites chafing on the frame or a kink that restricts flow; too little keeps both fittings under permanent tension. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and do this dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface creates a slow weep and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Soften a tight end for a few seconds in hot water if it resists.
Place the fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly to snug. A clamp cranked down until it bites into the rubber creates exactly the leak you are trying to prevent. Return the hose to its original clip so it stays clear of hot surfaces and moving components.
Wet Testing Before You Ride
Open the petcock and allow a minute for the line and the float bowl to fill. Wipe both joints with a dry rag, then examine each one under bright light for the smallest bead of fuel. Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes before checking a second time, since heat and vibration reveal marginal connections that look fine cold. When both ends stay completely dry, reinstall the bodywork and seat and put the 2018 Brute Force 300 back into service with confidence.
