Swapping the Fuel Line on a 2018 Honda TRX250 Recon ES

Most owners find this job because of a smell or a stain, not because it was on a checklist. A soft rubber hose is the shortest-lived part of the fuel system on a 2018 Recon ES, and when it starts giving up it announces itself in ways worth learning to read.

Clues Your Hose Is on Its Way Out

The 2018 Recon ES is carbureted and gravity fed, which means fuel is under a small but constant head of pressure any time the petcock is open. A compromised hose therefore leaks while the quad is parked, not just while it runs. Look for a wet patch on the floor beneath the engine, or a damp trail down the outside of the crankcase. A persistent gasoline odor around the tank is the earliest sign, often showing up weeks before anything drips.

Run your fingers along the hose. Healthy line squishes and springs back; a failing one feels rigid, sounds faintly crunchy, and shows fine cracks when you flex it. Performance symptoms come last: bogging when you open the throttle climbing a hill, a lean stumble at steady speed, or the engine sputtering as though the tank were nearly empty. If the hose has collapsed internally or partially blocked with gum, the carburetor simply cannot keep the float bowl full.

The Chemistry Behind a Hardened Line

Two processes work on that hose at the same time. From the outside, ambient heat and the warmth radiating off the air-cooled 229cc cylinder slowly drive out the plasticizers that keep rubber flexible. That is a one-way trip — the compound never recovers, and dry desert air speeds it along by wicking moisture out of the hose wall.

From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel does its own damage. Ethanol is hygroscopic, so it draws water into the fuel, and the resulting mix is harder on rubber than straight gasoline. Fuel that sits for months in a short line breaks down, leaves varnish on the inner wall, and can soften the liner until it starts shedding particles. On a Recon parked through the off-season with fuel in it, both mechanisms compound each other. Even a hose with no external cracks is worth replacing once it stops feeling pliable.

Gear, Parts, and Ventilation

Everything for this repair fits on one bench. Lay out:

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
  • An approved fuel container or drain pan with more capacity than you expect to need
  • Fresh fuel hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for gasoline
  • New clamps in the same style as the originals, or a small clamp assortment
  • A flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a razor blade or sharp knife
  • Plenty of shop rags

Ventilation is not a formality here. Gasoline vapor pools low to the ground and finds ignition sources you forgot about, so work outdoors or with the door wide open, and shut off anything with a pilot flame in the same space. Let the engine and exhaust cool fully before you start, and keep the fuel container closed except when you are actually pouring into it.

Draining Down and Freeing the Fitting

Rotate the petcock to off. On this carbureted Recon that single valve stops the flow completely, which is the luxury a fuel-injected quad does not give you — those machines have no petcock, and you either pinch the line closed with clamping pliers or pull the pump fuse and run the engine until it stalls to bleed off pressure first.

Take the seat off and remove the plastic panel over the tank to expose the full hose run. Put your pan under the carburetor, back the float bowl drain screw out, and let the bowl empty. Slide both clamps well back on the hose, then work the ends off the barbs with a gentle twisting motion. Old rubber grips hard, and prying at it with a screwdriver risks scoring the sealing surface of the petcock spigot or the carburetor inlet. Cutting a stubborn hose off lengthwise is always the safer choice. Pay attention to how the line sat in its clips; the 2018 Recon ES drives the rear wheels only, so the path is direct, without the front driveline hardware that forces longer routing on a 4x4.

Installing the Replacement Dry

Measure the old hose and cut the new one to match. Push each end fully onto its barb, all the way to the base, so the raised bead sits well inside the hose. Do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray all seem like they would help a stiff hose slide on, but they leave a film exactly where you need rubber gripping metal, and any of it can end up in the float bowl. Warm water is the only assist you need if the hose does not want to go.

Position new clamps behind the bead at both ends and tighten them evenly. Screw-type clamps should be snug, not crushed — over-torquing one distorts the hose and creates the leak you were trying to prevent. Reseat the hose in its factory guides so it clears the header, the frame, and the electric shift components.

Confirming a Dry Joint

Retighten the float bowl drain screw before anything else, then open the petcock and stand there watching. Gravity feed shows you a bad connection within seconds. Blot both fittings with a dry rag, wait a minute, and blot again; residual fuel from the removal can fool you the first time. Fire the engine, let it idle to fill the bowl and warm the hose, and inspect one final time with the machine running.

Two last items. Rinse the strainer screen inside the petcock while you have access, since it traps the crumbs a deteriorating hose leaves behind. And remember that on this carbureted Recon everything in the fuel path is out in the open where you can reach it — injected models put their filter inside the tank with the pump, so a hose swap there does nothing for a restricted filter. If your 2018 Recon ES still runs lean after a clean install, look at the carburetor jets next.
