Nothing on a utility quad fails as quietly as a fuel hose, and nothing leaves you walking home quite as reliably. Your 2018 Rancher 420 runs electronic fuel injection, which means the line you are inspecting is fed by a pump mounted inside the tank and stays pressurized long after the key comes out. There is no petcock to close, so the whole procedure starts with taking that pressure out of the system rather than simply turning a valve.

The Chemistry Behind a Failing Hose

Fuel hose is a rubber compound loaded with plasticizers that keep it flexible. Heat cycling drives those out slowly and permanently, and the hose that used to squeeze easily between your fingers becomes rigid and glassy. Rigid hose cannot absorb the vibration a working Rancher produces, so the flexing concentrates at the two ends where the rubber stretches over a fitting, and hairline splits open there first.

Where the machine lives matters. Quads kept in dry, low humidity country lose hose flexibility considerably earlier, because arid air continually pulls moisture out of the rubber. Ethanol blended pump gas causes the opposite kind of damage, sitting in the line during long unused periods, drawing in moisture, and gradually breaking the inner liner down into gum and loose particles. That combination hardens the outside while eroding the inside, and on an injected machine those shed particles head toward passages measured in fractions of a millimeter.

Clues Your Line Is on Borrowed Time

Take a close look if you notice:

  • Gasoline collecting on the skid plate or staining the floor beneath the parked machine
  • A fuel smell that peaks immediately after shutdown while the circuit is still pressurized
  • Fine cracks, a chalky exterior, or a stiff section you can feel by pinching the hose
  • Bogging on a climb, a stumble under acceleration, or the engine acting starved despite a full tank
  • A dirt caked ring around either fitting where fuel has wept and evaporated repeatedly

Do not rely on finding a puddle. Pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole tends to atomize and disappear before it can drip, which makes a persistent gasoline odor one of the strongest indicators on this Rancher.

Depressurizing Before Anything Comes Apart

Because this model has no fuel valve, you create your own shutoff. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a few seconds until it runs out of fuel and dies, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. That drops line pressure to near zero and removes the ignition source at the same time. Even then the hose still holds fuel, so plan on catching it. Line clamping pliers are worth keeping on hand for pinching off any low pressure or return section while you work, since nothing else on the machine will stop flow for you.

What to Have Ready and How to Stay Out of Trouble

Set out the following:

  • Gloves and eye protection
  • A drain pan plus an approved container for captured gasoline
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the factory inside diameter, never plain carburetor tubing
  • Correct clamps for the fittings on your machine, and a release tool if the tank end uses a locking quick connect
  • Line clamping pliers, a razor knife, and rags
  • Hand tools for the seat and body panels

Ventilation is the part people shortcut. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and pools at floor level exactly where you are working. Move the quad outdoors or open the overhead door completely so air moves down low, shut off any heater or appliance with a pilot flame, and keep spark producing tools out of the space entirely. Have an extinguisher positioned within reach before you open a fitting.

Taking the Old Hose Out

With pressure relieved, pull the seat and the panels covering the tank and the line's run toward the throttle body. Slide the pan into place and lay a rag over the first joint you separate. Walk any clamp well back along the hose before you disturb the fitting underneath it. Quick connect couplers release by pressing both locking tabs squarely and pulling straight off, never by levering to one side, because plastic collars turn brittle over the years and crack under prying.

Rotate the hose on its barb to break the varnish bond instead of yanking it. If it stays glued, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away, protecting the fitting at the cost of a hose you are throwing out anyway. Study the routing as it comes free and photograph each clip. This 4x4 chassis carries front differential hardware and extra frame structure, so the line follows a slightly longer path with more clearance points to respect than the same hose on a two wheel drive quad.

Installing the New Line and Confirming the Seal

Cut the replacement to the original length so it neither sags toward hot exhaust nor tugs on the fittings during engine movement. Press each end fully onto its fitting until it stops against the shoulder, working entirely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone are off limits on fuel fittings, because a lubricated barb gives pressurized fuel a path to escape past the clamp and can carry contamination into the injection system. Hot water for a few seconds is the right way to soften a stiff hose end.

Locate new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, firm enough to hold without cutting the rubber. A self locking quick connect takes no clamp: push until the collar clicks, then pull hard to verify it has latched. Return the hose to its original clips and check clearance from the header and the front driveline before closing anything up.

For the leak check, reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle primes the pump and pressurizes the line so you can inspect both joints while they are still dry. Start the engine next, wipe the fittings with a clean rag, and watch them for several minutes at idle. One thing worth remembering: the fuel filter on this Rancher is packaged inside the tank with the pump rather than sitting inline on the hose, so if fuel delivery still feels soft after a clean install, the in tank assembly is where the investigation continues.
