Access is the first hurdle on a 2018 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT EPS. The fuel plumbing sits under bodywork and behind the seat, and until you can see the whole run of hose from end to end you are guessing about what needs replacing and which fittings you will encounter. Open the machine up properly and everything downstream of that gets easier.

Getting to the Hose in the First Place

Take the seat off, then remove the plastic panels covering the tank until the pump module on the tank and the throttle body inlet are both plainly visible. Resist the temptation to work through a gap. You need room for two hands, a drain pan, and a rag, and you need a clear line of sight to inspect the joints later during the leak check. Keep the fasteners organized as they come out, because plastics on a utility machine use several different lengths and mixing them up leads to a cracked panel.

With everything exposed, trace the hose. This 4x4 sends its line past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a two–wheel–drive quad does not carry, so the path is slightly longer and uses more clips and clearance points. Photograph each one now, while the original hose is still installed and showing you exactly how it should sit.

Confirming You Are Working on an Injected System

The 2018 Rancher 420 uses PGM–FI electronic fuel injection, and that changes the fundamentals. An electric pump inside the tank feeds a pressurized hose forward to the throttle body, so there is no petcock to close and no gravity feed to rely on. There is no carburetor float bowl to drain either, and there is no inline filter partway down the hose, because the filter element is packaged inside the tank with the pump and the pressure regulator. The most important consequence is that the circuit still holds pressure after the engine shuts off, so relieving it becomes the first physical step of the job.

Why Rubber Fuel Line Wears Out

Fuel hose is compounded with plasticizers that keep it soft, and those slowly migrate out of the rubber under years of heat cycling next to a running engine. The wall stiffens, takes on a glossy look, and eventually goes chalky. Dry climates accelerate the process, since arid air pulls moisture out of the material and hardens it from the outside in. Once the hose loses its flexibility, the movement a working chassis puts through it becomes strain instead of flex, and hairline cracks appear at bends and at the shoulder just behind each clamp.

The inside faces a different attacker. Ethanol–blended gasoline absorbs moisture and gradually degrades the inner liner, and a machine sitting for months with E10 in the system gives that reaction all the time it needs to soften the liner and leave gum behind. Because that damage is invisible externally, a hose can look sound and still be sending material toward an injector with little tolerance for it.

Symptoms and the Parts List

Watch for a gasoline smell around the seat area in the minutes after shutdown, a damp spot or small puddle beneath the machine after it has sat, cracking that opens when you bend the hose, a hardened section you can feel by pinching it, a dust–caked ring at a fitting from dried seepage, bogging under load, hesitation as the throttle comes on, a lean stumble that feels like a nearly empty tank, and cranking that runs longer than it used to. Since the line is pressurized, escaping fuel often atomizes before it can drip, so smell can be a more sensitive test than a look at the floor.

  • Hose rated for fuel–injection pressure in the correct inside diameter
  • New clamps in the matching style, plus a quick–disconnect release tool if your coupler needs one
  • Line–clamping pliers, standing in for the petcock this model does not have
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • An approved sealed container for drained fuel and a wide catch pan
  • Socket set, small pick, razor knife, and a thick stack of rags

Gasoline handling deserves genuine attention. The vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor of an enclosed garage, exactly where appliance pilot flames sit. Work outdoors or with the door open at ground level, shut down anything with a flame or hot element in the space, avoid a drop light with an exposed bulb, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach before you open a fitting.

Removing the Old Line

Bleed the pressure down first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a few seconds until it stumbles and quits, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Position the drain pan and drape a rag over the first fitting before you open it, because a depressurized hose still holds liquid fuel that will run out.

Slide clamps well back along the hose before disturbing their fittings. A quick–connect coupler releases when both tabs are pressed evenly and the fitting is pulled straight off; never lever it sideways, since plastic collars grow brittle and split under prying. On a barbed spigot, twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond first, and when it still will not budge, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than pulling hard enough to damage a fitting you are keeping.

Installation and Verifying the Seal

Cut the replacement to the exact length of the piece you removed. Extra hose chafes against frame tubes or drifts toward moving parts, and a short piece pulls at both fittings each time the suspension cycles. Push every end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, and assemble dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting, because a lubricated sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a direct route past the clamp. Dip a stubborn end in hot water for a few seconds to soften it. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushing the rubber. If either end uses a self–locking coupler, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it latched, with no clamp added. Route the finished hose through every clip you photographed so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the front driveline.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle primes the pump and pressurizes the line while both joints are still clean and dry, which is precisely when a weep shows itself. Wipe the connections, start the engine, and inspect again at idle and after a few throttle blips, looking for any darkening at either fitting. Only after several minutes of confirmed dry running should the plastics and seat go back on. If the machine still feels starved for fuel with a fresh hose fitted, the filter inside the in–tank pump module is the next place to investigate, since nothing external filters fuel on this Rancher.
