Fuel hose is one of the few components on a 2018 Rancher 420 2x4 that ages on its own schedule regardless of how carefully the machine is maintained. Heat, vibration, and the fuel itself all work against the rubber, and eventually the line needs to come off. Here is how to handle that on this specific fuel-injected, two-wheel-drive Rancher.
Reading the Machine Before You Touch It
A hose usually gives notice. The first hint on an injected quad tends to be smell rather than sight, because a pressurized leak atomizes into vapor that evaporates before forming a drop. If you catch gasoline odor around the seat after shutdown, take it seriously even if the floor is spotless.
Follow up with a physical inspection. Run your fingers along the whole length feeling for rigid spots, look for hairline splits, glazing, or a chalky gray finish, and check both fittings for a ring of dust glued to dried fuel residue. Then think back on how the engine has been running: bogging under load, a lean stumble as revs climb, hesitation when you open the throttle, or an engine behaving as though the tank were nearly empty all belong on the same list of clues.
The Fuel Delivery Setup on This Rancher
This model year runs programmed fuel injection, so an in-tank electric pump feeds the throttle body through a pressurized hose. Consequences worth knowing in advance: there is no petcock to shut off, no float bowl to drain, the line stays pressurized after you switch the key off, and the fuel filter is built into the pump module inside the tank instead of sitting inline where you can reach it. Line-clamping pliers fill the role a fuel valve would play. With no front differential on this 2x4, the hose run stays short and easy to see.
Why Fuel Lines Give Up
Two processes work simultaneously. Heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the rubber compound, hardening the hose until it fractures instead of flexing. And ethanol-blended fuel sitting in the line for a season draws in moisture and attacks the inner liner, softening it and leaving gum behind. Add dry climate conditions, which continuously pull moisture from the hose wall, and a line in arid country can be brittle years before an identical part in a humid region.
The important takeaway is that the damage is not always visible. A hose can present a decent exterior while its liner sheds material toward the injector, which is why age carries real weight in the decision to replace.
Tools, Parts, and Ventilation
Have all of this staged before you separate a fitting:

- New clamps, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if locking couplers are present

On ventilation, be deliberate. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and pools at floor level, where pilot lights and electrical connections tend to be. Work outside or with the door fully open, shut down flame appliances and heaters, keep an extinguisher close, cap the container as soon as it holds fuel, and get soaked rags out of the building.
Bleeding the System and Removing the Line
Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls, shut the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the covers over the tank, then trace the hose from the pump flange to the throttle body and photograph its clips and guides while everything is still in place.
Slide the pan beneath the first joint and wrap it with a rag before loosening anything, since a depressurized hose still contains fuel. Move each clamp well back along the hose. To separate a locking coupler, press both tabs in squarely and pull straight off in line with the fitting, never at an angle, because plastic collars grow brittle with age. Where the hose has bonded to a barb, run a razor blade lengthwise along it and peel it away, protecting the fitting for reuse.
Final Assembly and Leak Verification
Cut the new hose to match the original. Push each end all the way onto its fitting, dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere on the sealing surface — lubricant gives pressurized fuel a route to creep past the clamp. Warm water is the only assistance a tight end should get. Position fresh clamps behind the bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly. A self-locking quick-connect wants no clamp at all: push it home until you hear it click, then pull firmly to confirm it has latched. Reseat the hose in its original clips, clear of the exhaust and the shift linkage.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking, letting the pump pressurize the circuit while everything is cold. Inspect both joints closely with a light and a dry rag. When they stay clean, start the engine, let it idle several minutes, blip the throttle, and look one final time before the bodywork goes back on and you take a short loop near home.
