Fuel Line Removal and Installation on a 2018 Can-Am Renegade 1000

Knowing which kind of fuel system you are working on changes the entire plan of attack, so start there. The 2018 Renegade 1000 carries the fuel-injected 976cc Rotax V-twin, and its fuel supply comes from an electric pump mounted inside the tank. That means the hose running to the throttle body is pressurized whenever the key has been on, and it means there is no petcock valve waiting under the tank to make your life easy. Nothing about the job is difficult, but the order of operations is not negotiable.
Injected, Not Carbureted
On a carbureted quad the routine is close down the petcock, drain the float bowl, and pull the clamps. None of that applies here. The Renegade's pump lives in the tank, the filter is integrated with it, and pressure has to be bled out of the circuit electrically before a fitting can be opened safely. Some connections on injected machines use a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than a clamped barb, so identify which style yours has before ordering parts. It is also a selectable four-wheel-drive chassis, which means the line is routed with a few extra clearance points around front differential hardware and frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive machine would not require.
Understanding the Failure Mode
Fuel hose fails from two directions simultaneously. Externally, the plasticizers that keep rubber elastic slowly leave the material, and the heat this V-twin puts under the plastics hastens that loss. The hose goes hard and glassy, and then frame vibration cracks it, geneRally at a bend where stress concentrates rather than along a straight run. Machines kept in dry, arid regions harden noticeably faster because low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall.
Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline is the aggressor. The alcohol in the fuel absorbs water and gradually degrades the inner liner, softening it and leaving gum behind. A Renegade that goes weeks or months between rides with fuel in the system gives that chemistry a free run. That is why age matters as much as looks — a hose can pass a glance while quietly sending degraded material downstream.
Red Flags to Watch
Any of the following calls for a hands-on inspection:
- Fuel pooling under the machine or wetting the skid plate after it has been parked overnight
- A gasoline odor around the tank that does not fade, often sharpest immediately after key-off
- Fine cracking, a chalky gray finish, or a stretch of hose that feels stiff instead of resilient
- The engine bogging when you load it, stumbling lean at higher rpm, or acting as if the tank were nearly dry
- A dirt-caked ring at a fitting, the telltale of fuel weeping and evaporating over time
A pressurized leak frequently atomizes rather than dripping, so treat a strong smell as evidence even when the floor stays clean.
Prep Work and Gasoline Handling
Have this ready before you begin:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves
- A fuel-rated container plus a wide catch pan
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter
- New clamps of the right style, and a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is used at the tank
- Line-clamping pliers to shut off a low-pressure section, since no petcock exists on this model
- Hand tools for the seat and plastics, a razor knife, and clean rags
The real safety concern here is vapor, not liquid. Gasoline fumes are denser than air, so they settle at floor level and stay there, which is exactly where your knees and any nearby ignition source happen to be. Work outdoors or with the door wide open and get air circulating low. Unplug chargers and heaters, extinguish pilot lights, and keep an extinguisher within reach of the machine.
Old Hose Out
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine briefly until it dies as the remaining pressure is spent. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Strip off the seat and the side panels covering the tank outlet, then trace the hose forward, noting the clips that hold it. Slide the drain pan underneath and lay a rag across the first joint you separate, because a depressurized line still holds fuel that will run out.
Move each clamp well back before applying force. Spring clips open with pliers, worm-gear clamps loosen and slide. For a quick-connect coupler, press the release tabs evenly and draw the fitting straight back rather than levering it, since aged plastic collars crack easily. Twist each hose end gently to break the varnish seal at the barb, and if one has bonded itself solid, split it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of risking the fitting. Photograph the routing and every clearance point around the front driveline before the old hose is completely free.
New Hose In
Cut the replacement to the length of the original, no more. Extra hose droops into frame tubes or front drive components and abrades, and a short piece loads its fittings every time the engine moves on its mounts. Seat each end all the way onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and install it dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone off the sealing surfaces completely — anything slick there gives pressurized fuel a path past the clamp. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn hose end enough to slide on unaided.
Locate the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and snug them evenly, firm without cutting into the fresh rubber. If the tank end uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until the collar clicks and then tug to prove it has latched; that joint takes no clamp. Refit the hose into its original clips, well away from exhaust heat and moving hardware.
Verification Before the Panels Go Back
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, which lets you check both joints while the area is still dry. Wipe them with a clean rag and watch for any bead appearing. Then start the engine and inspect once more at idle, tracing the run with a flashlight while heat and vibration are present. Several minutes of leak-free running plus a slow lap of the yard should come before the plastics are reinstalled.
Keep this in mind afterward: the fuel filter on the injected Renegade is part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline element on the visible hose. A new line does nothing for a restricted filter, so if the 2018 machine still behaves like it is starving for fuel, the in-tank assembly is the logical next place to look.
