Replacing the hose is honest home-shop work once the sequence is clear.

Bleeding Down and Getting the Old Hose Out

Pull the fuel pump fuse first, then crank the engine and let it run until it stumbles and dies from starvation. That releases the pressure held in the line. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable so the pump cannot energize while your hands are in the fuel path. Remove the seat and side panels so both ends of the run are genuinely reachable.

Set the catch pan underneath and drape a rag over the first fitting you plan to open, because the hose still holds liquid fuel even after pressure is gone. Slide spring clips or worm-gear clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. On a self-locking quick-connect, compress the tabs evenly and draw the coupler straight off the nipple; prying at an angle cracks a collar that has hardened in sun and mud.

Expect dried varnish to have glued the hose to its barbs. Break that bond with a light twist rather than hauling on the hose, and if it still refuses, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off. Installing the New Line

Keep lubricant off the fittings entirely. If a hose end resists, twenty seconds in hot water softens it enough to seat unassisted.

Position new clamps immediately behind the bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, no clamp belongs on it — push until the collar clicks and pull firmly to confirm the latch engaged. Seat the hose in every original clip so it remains clear of exhaust heat and the front driveline.

The Leak Check

Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect both joints while the surrounding area is still completely dry. Wipe each fitting with a clean light-colored rag and look for staining, which appears well ahead of a visible drop.

Rubber fuel line depends on plasticizers to remain flexible, and heat drives them out. Positioned near a hardworking V-twin, the hose accumulates hundreds of heat cycles a season and stiffens steadily from soft to firm to brittle. Once brittle, the ordinary flex a utility chassis puts through it over rocks and ruts opens hairline cracks in the surface. Owners in dry, low-humidity regions reach that point sooner, since arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall.

The inside deteriorates separately. Ethanol-blended pump gas absorbs water, and fuel sitting in the line during a quiet stretch of the season attacks the inner liner, softening it and shedding fine material toward the injectors. Because that damage is entirely internal, a hose can look serviceable while being anything but.

Symptoms and What to Have Ready

Signs pointing at the fuel line:

  • A puddle or wet film beneath the machine after it has sat
  • A gasoline odor near the tank, sharpest just after shutdown while pressure remains
  • Cracking, glazing, or a section that pinches hard between your fingers
  • Caked dirt in a ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or the engine acting nearly out of fuel

Your kit for the job:

  • Gloves and eye protection
  • Injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter
  • Correct-style clamps, or a quick-connect release tool

Gasoline Safety and a Closing Note

Handle the fumes with real care. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downward off the machine and collects in a layer along the floor where you will be working, and your nose dulls to it within minutes. Work outdoors if you can, or open the shop so air actually moves at ground level instead of trusting a window overhead. Shut off water heaters and furnaces with standing pilot flames, keep sparking and cutting tools out of the building, and stage a fire extinguisher beside the machine rather than across the shop. Get collected fuel sealed and removed from the area before you begin testing.
