How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2017 Kodiak 700 4x4 IRS

Replacing fuel hose is inexpensive, but doing it on an injected machine without preparation gets messy fast. The 2017 Kodiak 700 4x4 IRS runs electronic fuel injection on its 686cc single, so the supply line between the tank and the throttle body is a pressurized circuit fed by a pump living inside the tank. There is no petcock to shut, which means the order of operations matters more than the wrench work.

Parts and Tools Worth Laying Out First

Stage everything on the bench before the machine comes apart:

  • Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general-purpose carburetor line
  • Fresh clamps matching the style you find, plus a release tool if the tank end uses a locking quick-connect
  • Line-clamping pliers, since this Kodiak has no fuel valve to stop flow at a low-pressure section
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and a sealed, fuel-rated catch container
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat, racks, and side plastics, plus a small flat-blade screwdriver
  • A razor knife, a flashlight, and more rags than you think you need

Set up outdoors or with the shop door fully open. Gasoline vapor sinks rather than rises, pooling around your feet where a heater pilot, a trouble light, or a battery charger can find it. Remove those sources from the area instead of switching them off, keep an extinguisher close, and pull the battery negative before opening anything.

What Actually Kills a Fuel Hose

Rubber fuel line ages out on two fronts. Externally, the plasticizers that give it flexibility slowly leave under years of engine heat, and the wall turns stiff and glassy. A hose that cannot flex is a hose that cracks, and the cracks always start where it bends around a frame member or into a fitting. Riders in dry, high-desert conditions see this arrive early, because low humidity draws moisture out of the rubber and accelerates the hardening from the surface inward.

Internally, ethanol-blended pump gas goes after the liner. Alcohol attracts water into the fuel, and a hose sitting full through a long idle period degrades from within while the outside continues to stiffen. Deposits of gum and varnish form during the same stretch and can restrict flow enough to affect how the engine runs. The practical takeaway is that appearance alone is a poor test on a Kodiak with several seasons behind it.

Symptoms You Should Not Ride Past

Fuel on the ground under a parked machine is the clearest signal, and the trail usually leads up toward a fitting. A strong gas smell right after shutdown counts as well, since the circuit holds residual pressure for a while and a weeping joint will vent into the air rather than onto the floor. Squeeze the hose along its length and feel for hard, chalky, or crazed sections; if any part of the run has gone stiff, replace the whole piece rather than a segment.

Performance symptoms complete the picture. A restricted or internally shedding line starves the injector, and the Kodiak responds with bogging under load, hesitation on hard throttle, or the general behavior of a machine that thinks the tank is empty. Dried fuel caking dust into a ring around a fitting is another quiet indicator that a connection has been seeping for a while.

Depressurizing the System and Pulling the Line

Begin by taking the pressure out. Remove the fuel pump fuse, then crank the engine until it stalls and will not restart, which burns off what is left in the line. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable.

Pull the seat and the side panels to reach the tank, the pump module, and the hose path to the throttle body. Position your drain pan and lay a rag over the first joint. Slide clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the fitting they hold. If the tank end uses a quick-connect coupler, depress the tabs evenly and pull straight off; do not lever the collar sideways, because aged plastic breaks under prying. At a barbed fitting, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond that has formed over the years, then walk it off. A stretch that has hardened into place is best slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled away, which spares the fitting from a hard pull.

Note the routing carefully as the old hose comes free. With four-wheel drive there is front differential hardware in the way, and the independent rear suspension adds chassis structure the line has to clear. Photographs of every clip and pass-through are worth more than memory here.

Making the New Connection

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original and no longer. Surplus hose looks generous and behaves badly, sagging into a frame tube or fouling the steering path. A square cut seats better on the barb than an angled one.

Slide each end on until it bottoms out against the fitting shoulder, working dry the entire time. Nothing goes on these surfaces — no grease, no oil, no silicone spray. Lubricant on a fuel joint provides a path for pressurized gas to creep past the clamp and encourages the hose to walk off over time. If an end is tight, dip it briefly in hot water and it will slide on unassisted. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly to snug, not crushed. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to verify it has latched; no clamp belongs there. Finally, put the hose back through every factory clip so it stays away from exhaust heat and rotating driveline parts.

Checking Your Work Under Pressure

Reinstall the fuel pump fuse and Reconnect the battery. Before starting, cycle the key on and off several times so the pump pressurizes the line while everything is still dry and easy to read. Inspect both joints closely, wipe them with a clean rag, and look again from below with the flashlight where a droplet would gather.

Then start the engine and give it several minutes at idle, checking the connections again and throttling up briefly to add vibration. Keep in mind that the fuel filter on this injected Kodiak lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, so a fresh line does nothing for a plugged filter. If fuel delivery still feels off after a clean installation, that module is where to look next. Reinstall the plastics and seat once the joints stay dry, then ride a short slow lap and check underneath one final time.
