Replacing a Leaking Fuel Line on a 2017 Kodiak 700 4x4 EPS IRS

Catching a fuel line before it splits is the whole point of paying attention to it. On a 2017 Kodiak 700 4x4 EPS IRS the supply hose runs from an in-tank pump module to the throttle body, and since this machine is fuel injected, that hose holds pressure and cannot be isolated by turning a valve. There simply is not one on the quad.

Signs the Line Is Done

Begin with an honest look rather than an assumption. Fuel collecting on the skid plate or the floor after the Kodiak has been parked a few hours is the clearest evidence, and the trail usually leads up toward one of the two fittings. Odor counts too, and it is sharpest right after shutdown while the circuit still holds residual pressure.

Run the hose through your fingers along its full length. Chalky gray patches, fine crazing, or a stretch that feels hard instead of pliable all condemn the entire run rather than one spot. A dark ring of dust glued to a fitting marks a slow weep that has dried repeatedly. Finally, judge how the engine performs: restricted flow starves the injector and shows up as bogging under load, a stumble when you open the throttle hard, or the unmistakable feel of running out of gas with fuel still in the tank. On a pressurized system a small leak may atomize entirely, so smell without a puddle is still a real finding.

Rubber Under Attack

Two mechanisms work on that hose at the same time, from opposite surfaces. Externally, engine heat drives out the plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible. The wall stiffens, stops absorbing vibration, and begins crazing at the bends, and dry climates accelerate this because low humidity pulls moisture out of the material and hardens it from the outside in.

Internally, ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the liner. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks the liner down, softening and delaminating it, and any period where the machine sits with fuel in it lets gum and varnish accumulate inside the passage. The chassis contributes as well, since a big single vibrates constantly and the independent rear suspension keeps things moving. A hose being consumed from both sides can still pass a casual glance, which is why years in service should drive the decision.

What to Have Ready

Lay all of this out first:

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves, plus a sealed fuel-rated container for captured fuel
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter
  • New clamps in the style that came off, and a quick-connect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, since there is no fuel valve on this Kodiak to stop flow at a low-pressure section
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a razor knife
  • A flashlight and more rags than you expect to need

Ventilation is genuinely important. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and sinks to floor level, gathering where water heater pilots, shop heaters, extension cord connections, and battery chargers sit. Work outside or with the door fully open, physically move ignition sources out of the space instead of switching them off, keep an extinguisher nearby, and disconnect the battery negative before anything opens.

Cutting Power to the Pump

Do not open a fitting on a live circuit. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls and will not restart, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. That sequence takes the line down to atmospheric pressure and keeps the fuel in your container instead of across the frame.

Remove the seat and the side panels to expose the tank, the pump module, and the hose path. Place a drain pan below and lay a rag over the first joint, since a depressurized hose still contains standing fuel. Note as you go that the EPS hardware near the steering shaft and the front differential of the 4x4 driveline both take up room, so the factory routing threads the hose through specific clips that keep it clear of heat and moving parts.

Freeing and Replacing the Hose

Slide clamps well back along the hose before touching the fittings they hold. On a locking coupler, depress the release tabs squarely and pull straight off without any prying, because aged plastic collars break easily. At a barbed fitting, twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond and then work it off; a hardened section is safer slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled away than yanked. Photograph the routing before the old piece is entirely out.

Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly, with a square end. Push each end on until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder, and install everything dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone spray, because lubricant on a fuel joint gives pressurized gas a path out from under the clamp and lets the hose migrate off the barb. Hot water for a few seconds softens a tight end enough to slide on. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, snug rather than crushed. A self-locking quick-connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged firmly to confirm engagement, with no clamp added. Return the hose to all of its original clips.

Post Install Inspection

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, which lets you examine both joints while the surrounding area is still clean. Wipe them dry with a fresh rag and inspect again with the flashlight from underneath, where any bead would collect.

Then start the engine and check a third time at idle. Let it run several minutes and blip the throttle so vibration becomes part of the test, and only reinstall the plastics and seat after both connections have stayed dry through that. A short slow lap followed by one more look underneath finishes the verification properly.

The Filter You Cannot See

One characteristic of an injected Kodiak is worth carrying away from this job. There is no serviceable inline filter sitting in the open on the fuel hose; the element is part of the pump assembly inside the tank. That means a brand-new line does nothing for a restricted filter, and if the machine still acts starved for fuel after a clean installation with no leaks, the in-tank module is the logical next place to investigate rather than more hose.
