Fuel hose ages whether the Grizzly gets ridden or not, which is why a well kept 2017 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS with modest hours can still need a new line. This model uses electronic fuel injection, so the hose in question runs from an in tank pump forward to the throttle body under real pressure, and no petcock exists to stop the flow. That makes the shutdown sequence the most important part of the job, and the rest is careful hand work in a fairly tight space.

Signs Worth Investigating Today

The first symptom is almost always your nose. A gasoline smell that hangs around the seat area after the engine is shut off means fuel is escaping somewhere it should not. Beyond that, look for liquid pooling on the skid plate, a wet streak running down a frame tube, or a dark ring of dust glued to a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried repeatedly. Squeeze the hose along its length: hard, glassy sections and fine surface cracks both mean the compound is finished, and a soft, swollen area near a barb means the inner liner has broken down.

Performance changes count as symptoms too. A Grizzly that bogs when you open the throttle, stumbles lean climbing a hill, or acts like the tank is nearly empty when it is not may be losing pressure or drawing air through a compromised hose. On an injected machine, remember that fuel escaping a pressurized line often atomizes and evaporates instead of dripping, so a strong smell with a dry floor is still worth chasing down with a flashlight.

Why the Rubber Stops Being Rubber

Hose degrades from both directions at once. The exterior loses plasticizers to heat, sunlight, and simple age, and once the wall is hard it cracks under the flex a Grizzly sees crossing ruts and rocks. Dry climate riders reach that point sooner, because low humidity strips residual moisture from the rubber and hardens it from the surface inward. Vibration then concentrates stress right where the hose bends around a frame member.

The interior fails differently. Ethanol blended pump gas carries dissolved water and works on the liner, and gasoline left sitting through a long layup leaves gum and varnish behind as the volatile portion evaporates. That deposit narrows the passage and flakes loose into the injection system. Because none of that shows on the outside, a hose that looks fine can still be the reason for a fuel delivery complaint.

Shutting the System Down and Removing the Line

Begin by killing pressure. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the block under the seat, then attempt to start the engine so it burns off whatever pressure remains. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and the center bodywork to expose the tank outlet, and trace the hose forward, photographing each clip and guide before you disturb it.

Slide the drain pan under the connection and drape a rag over it, because even a depressurized hose holds fuel. Move clamps well back along the hose before breaking the joint. If varnish has bonded the rubber to the barb, slit the hose lengthwise with a razor and peel it off rather than levering on a fitting that has been baked and frozen for years. A quick connect coupler releases when you squeeze its tabs squarely and pull straight back, with no rocking. This being a 4x4 with power steering, the hose shares its corridor with front differential and steering hardware, so verify which side of each brace it runs on while it is still in place.

Preparation, Parts, and Vapor Safety

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A shallow drain pan and a sealed, fuel approved container
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter
  • Correct style clamps, and a release tool if your quick connect needs one
  • Line clamping pliers, which do the job the missing petcock would have done
  • Razor blade, rags, and hand tools for the seat and plastics

The ventilation warning here is not a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level exactly where you are kneeling and can accumulate without you noticing the smell. Work outdoors or with the garage fully open and a fan moving air along the ground, shut off any nearby appliance with a pilot light, and keep hot work lights and power tools away from the open fittings.

Fitting the New Hose and Checking Your Work

Cut the replacement to match the old hose exactly. A line that is too long chafes on the frame or creeps toward exhaust heat once the panels are reinstalled. Seat each end fully onto its barb, all the way to the shoulder, and do the whole installation dry. No grease, oil, or silicone on the fittings: any film there gives pressurized fuel a route past the seal and can carry contaminants downstream. Dipping the hose end in hot water for thirty seconds makes it pliable enough to push on by hand.

Install new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without biting into the rubber. If the tank connection is a self locking quick connect, push until you hear the collar click and then tug to confirm it has latched, because that fitting is designed to hold without a clamp. Return the hose to each original clip so it stays clear of the front driveline.

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the circuit while everything is still dry and easy to read. Wipe both joints with a clean rag, start the engine, and inspect once more at idle before the bodywork goes back on. Finally, keep in mind that this injected Grizzly carries its fuel filter inside the tank with the pump rather than inline, so if delivery still feels weak after a leak free install, that module is the next stop.
