Swapping the Fuel Line on Your 2017 Grizzly 700 4x4

A fuel hose that is on its way out will usually give you a couple of chances to catch it before it strands you. Learning to read those signals on a 2017 Grizzly 700, then replacing the hose correctly on a fuel injected machine with no shutoff valve, is a genuinely useful skill for anyone who rides beyond cell service.

Signals a Rider Should Not Ignore

The engine talks first. A 708cc single that bogs partway up a climb, hesitates when you roll the throttle on, or surges lean as though the tank were nearly empty is describing a fuel delivery restriction, and a collapsing or internally degraded hose is one cause. Then there is the evidence you can see and smell: a wet patch or puddle on the skid plate after the machine has been parked, and a sharp gasoline odor that hangs around the middle of the quad in the first minutes after shutdown, when the circuit is still holding pressure.

Get hands on the hose itself. Fine cracks and crazing show up at the bends where flex concentrates, and a chalky white bloom on the surface is a sign the compound has dried out. Pinch the hose: healthy rubber compresses softly, while a failing hose feels hard and glassy. Finally, look for a caked ring of dirt at either fitting. That is what fuel leaves behind when it seeps out slowly and evaporates over weeks, and on an injected machine it may be the only visible clue, since a pressure side pinhole can atomize fuel into vapor without ever dripping to the floor.

Rubber Does Not Age Gracefully

Two independent processes are at work. Heat cycling gradually drives the plasticizers out of the hose wall, and once those flexible compounds are gone the material stiffens and can no longer move with a chassis that twists constantly over rough ground. Cracks follow at bends and clamp shoulders. Dry climates speed this up, because low humidity pulls remaining moisture out of the hose from the outside.

From the bore side, ethanol blended pump gas attracts moisture and slowly attacks the inner liner, leaving gum and softened material behind. That damage concentrates during long idle stretches when fuel stands still against the liner instead of flowing through, which is why a Grizzly that sits for a season with a partial tank can age its plumbing without adding a mile.

Fuel System Confirmation Before You Start

The 2017 Grizzly 700 is electronically fuel injected. Fuel is pushed by an electric pump mounted inside the tank, travels under pressure to the throttle body, and is metered by the injector. Nothing about the system relies on gravity, and there is no petcock under the tank to close. That has three consequences: the replacement hose must be rated for injection pressure and match the original inside diameter, the pressure has to be bled before a fitting is opened, and line clamping pliers become your substitute for a shutoff valve.

Filtration is inside the tank on this platform, integrated with the pump assembly instead of hanging inline where you could change it. Keep that in mind as a diagnostic boundary: new hose fixes hose problems, and a restricted in-tank filter remains a separate possibility.

Tools, Parts, and a Serious Note on Fumes

Lay out injection rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps sized to it, a quick connect release tool if the pump plate uses a locking coupler, line clamping pliers, nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a drain pan, plenty of rags, sockets, a screwdriver, and a sharp utility knife.

Ventilation is where riders get careless. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and drifts along the floor rather than escaping through a window at head height. A closed garage that also houses a water heater, furnace, or shop heater is a poor place to open a pressurized fuel line. Work outdoors if the weather allows, or with the door fully raised and a fan moving air across the floor to push vapor out at ground level. Shut off any pilot light or heating element in the space, keep an extinguisher within reach, and take fuel soaked rags outside rather than dropping them in a shop bin.

Taking the Old Hose Off

Bleed the circuit first. Pull the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, run the engine until it starves and quits, turn the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the side plastics so you can see the tank, the pump plate, and the full length of hose running back to the throttle body.

Slide the drain pan into position and drape a rag over each joint before releasing it, because even a bled line holds residual fuel. Move the clamps well down the hose and away from the barbs first. A plastic quick connect wants its release tabs squeezed squarely and the coupler drawn straight off the nipple; prying sideways will crack the collar. Hose that has varnished onto a barb should be twisted gently to break the bond, and if it holds, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of levering on the fitting.

Trace the routing before the original leaves. Four wheel drive brings front differential hardware and extra frame structure into the picture, and the hose is clipped to clear all of it. Photograph those clips and clearance points while the old hose is still in place.

Installing and Confirming a Dry Job

Cut the replacement to exactly the length of the old hose. Extra length sags onto a frame tube and chafes, or drifts toward the exhaust where heat shortens its life. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and assemble everything dry — grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a path to creep along a sealing surface. If a hose end resists, dip it in hot water for a few seconds instead of reaching for lubricant.

Seat new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tightened evenly and snug rather than crushed. A self locking quick connect gets no clamp: press until the collar clicks, then pull firmly to confirm it latched. Route the hose back through every original clip so it hangs clear of the driveline and hot surfaces.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose so you can inspect both joints while everything is still dry, which makes a slow weep easy to catch. Wipe the fittings, watch for any bead of fuel, then start the engine and check again at idle for several minutes before the plastics go back on.
