Fuel hose is a consumable, even though nothing on the machine ever reminds you of it. On a 2017 King Quad 400ASi the hose carrying fuel from the tank to the throttle body has spent years absorbing heat, vibration, and the chemistry of modern pump gas, and every one of those inputs is slowly changing the rubber. Knowing exactly what is happening to it explains both when to replace it and why a tidy-looking hose can still be the problem.
Heat, Time, and Chemistry Working Together
Start with the exterior. Each time the engine warms up and cools down, the hose expands and contracts, and over hundreds of those cycles the plasticizers that keep rubber flexible migrate out of the compound. Add years of open-air and ultraviolet exposure and the hose progresses from soft and springy to firm, then chalky, then brittle enough that any bend opens fine fissures. This runs noticeably faster in dry, arid country, where low ambient humidity keeps drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward. Once the material is rigid, ordinary chassis flex on rough ground grows those hairline cracks into genuine leak paths.
Now the interior. Ethanol-blended gasoline holds water in suspension, and that moisture gradually attacks the inner liner of ordinary rubber hose. A machine that sits for a season with such fuel standing in the line ends up with a softened, swollen liner and gum or varnish deposits accumulated at the barbs. Because this system is pressurized rather than gravity-fed, the pump is constantly loading every one of those compromised areas, which is why an injected quad tends to show a marginal hose earlier than a carbureted one.
Verifying the Fuel Delivery Layout
The 400ASi uses electronic fuel injection. An electric pump housed inside the fuel tank pressurizes the supply and feeds the throttle body injector, so there is no petcock at the base of the tank and the circuit remains under pressure after shutdown. Deliberately relieving that pressure is the first mechanical step of the job. On this platform some connections are self-locking quick-connect couplers rather than a barb and clamp, and the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module instead of being serviceable on the visible hose. With the 4X4 driveline and automatic transmission, the line has to work around the front differential, the front driveshaft, and additional frame crossmembers, so it runs through tighter clearances than a two-wheel-drive machine would demand.
Symptoms You Can Act On
- A gasoline odor near the tank strongest right after you shut the engine down
- A wet patch, streak, or dried stain on the skid plate, frame rail, or shop floor
- Surface crazing, a chalky grey appearance, or a stretch of hose that feels hard and glassy
- Dust caked into a collar at a fitting, left behind by fuel that seeped and dried
- Bogging under load, hesitation on hard acceleration, or a lean condition at higher rpm
Because pressurized fuel tends to atomize as it escapes, a leak on this machine can be entirely real and still leave nothing on the floor. Trust smell and touch over sight.
What You Need on the Bench
Gather nitrile gloves, safety glasses, a sealed fuel-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, fresh clamps suited to your fittings, a quick-disconnect release tool if locking couplers are present, line-clamping pliers for pinching off a low-pressure section since there is no petcock, sockets and a screwdriver for the bodywork, a razor blade, and clean rags.
The safety piece is genuine, not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor where pilot lights and power strips are, so ventilation that matters means an open garage door or working outdoors. Shut off appliances with standing flames, keep torches and grinders away entirely, leave the battery disconnected until you test, and clean up spills as they happen rather than letting fuel evaporate off the concrete all day.
From Depressurizing to the Old Hose Coming Out
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stalls or refuses to fire, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative. Pull the seat and plastic panels so the tank and the full hose run are exposed, position the drain pan, and cover the first fitting you separate with a rag, since a bled hose still holds fuel.
Slide clamps well back along the hose before you disturb either joint. For a quick-connect coupler, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without prying to the side, because aged plastic collars crack easily. For a barb the hose has varnished itself onto, twist a quarter turn to shear the bond before pulling, and if it holds fast, split it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off in halves. Photograph the routing through each clip and around the front driveline before the old piece is fully clear.
Fitting the New Hose and Testing It
Cut the replacement to match the original length precisely, since leftover slack only finds something hot or moving to chafe on. Press each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone on a pressurized sealing surface, because lubricant there creates a leak path and lets the hose walk off the barb over time. Soften a stiff end in hot water for half a minute if it resists. Position new clamps just behind each raised bead and tighten them evenly, and where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until it clicks and then tug firmly to verify the latch instead of adding a clamp it does not want.
Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the circuit while the area is still dry. Look and feel at both joints, then start the engine and observe through several minutes of idle with a clean rag in hand. A short slow lap and a final warm inspection later, the panels and seat can go back on with confidence.
